A Look At Traditional Islam's General Discord With A Permanent System Of Global Cooperation, Meghan E. Tepas Jul 2009

A Look At Traditional Islam's General Discord With A Permanent System Of Global Cooperation, Meghan E. Tepas

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

In today's world, nation-states do not operate in isolation. Rather, the myriad global organizations and cross-border treaties evidence that the post-World War II political climate is one of interconnectedness and cooperation between states. Against this backdrop, this Note surveys the tension between the current global world order and a strict adherence to traditional source-based application of Islamic law, Shari'a. The tension begins with the concept of statehood, seemingly absent in traditional Islam, and continues with the Islamic unification of religion and state and its limited role for a political leader. Using Iran as an example, this Note argues that political …

Holding Students Accountable, Jeremy Fries

Action Research Projects

This action research study of approximately 90 high school algebra students investigates how frequent quizzing benefits them during the course of a semester. The intent of the research was to see how well students kept up with the material and if frequent quizzing helped them on the chapter tests. It was also designed to help me gain a better understanding of what students know and how I need to adjust daily routines so that all students stay caught up. I discovered that although frequent quizzes are not the students’ favorite activity to take part in, they learn to accept the …

A New Approach For Managing Bovine Tuberculosis: Veterinary Services’ Proposed Action Plan Jul 2009

A New Approach For Managing Bovine Tuberculosis: Veterinary Services’ Proposed Action Plan

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a serious disease with animal health, public health, and international trade consequences. The cooperative Federal-State-industry effort to eradicate bovine TB from cattle in the United States has made significant progress since the program’s inception in 1917. However, the goal of eradication remains elusive.

This proposed action plan presents Veterinary Services’ (VS’) current thinking about changes we are considering for the TB program to address our current challenges.

This action plan will:
1. Reduce the introduction of TB into the U.S. national herd from imported animals and wildlife by:
o Applying additional requirements to cattle imports from …

Gp3 Is A Structural Component Of The Prrsv Type Ii (Us) Virion, M. De Lima, I. H. Ansari, P. B. Das, B. J. Ku, F. J. Martinez-Lobo, Fernando A. Osorio

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Abstract Glycoprotein 3 (GP3) is a highly glycosylated PRRSV envelope protein which has been reported as being present in the virions of PRRSV type I, while missing in the type II PRRSV (US) virions. We herein present evidence that GP3 is indeed incorporated in the virus particles of a North American strain of PRRSV (FL12), at a density that is consistent with the minor structural role assigned to GP3 in members of the Arterivirus genus. Two 15aa peptides corresponding to two different immunodominant linear epitopes of GP3 derived from the North American strain of PRRSV (FL12) were used as antigen …

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Anaesthetic preconditioning (APC) exerts cardioprotective effects by reducing infarct size and improving recovery of contractile function after ischaemia-reperfusion. The interval between brief exposure to volatile anaesthetic and sustained ischaemia, the acute memory phase, is dependent on intracellular signalling mediating this cardioprotection. Intramyocyte translocation of protein kinase C (PKC) is known to be a key mediator in APC. We examined the relationship between the time frame of the acute memory phase of sevoflurane preconditioning and intramyocyte translocation of PKC-alpha, delta and epsilon to the particulate fraction. METHODS: Isolated perfused guinea pig hearts were subjected to 30 min ischaemia …

John Paul Ii And Christian Personalism Vs. Peter Singer And Utilitarianism: Two Radically Opposed Conceptions Of The Nature And Meaning Of Suffering, Peter J. Colosi

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

Although Christian ethics and contemporary utilitarianism both employ terms such as love and compassion, they are in fact polar opposite ethical views. This fact is not at all easy to discern. One key to perceiving the radical opposition between them lies in clarifying their respective concepts of suffering. In the Christian view, suffering is always understood as the suffering of individual persons, while in utilitarianism suffering is primarily understood as a quantifiable entity detached from the individuals who experience it. The paper attempts a primarily philosophical elucidation of this difference, including some theological points, by taking as its point of …

Collective Batesian Mimicry Of Ant Groups By Aggregating Spiders, Ximena J. Nelson, Robert R. Jackson Jul 2009

Collective Batesian Mimicry Of Ant Groups By Aggregating Spiders, Ximena J. Nelson, Robert R. Jackson

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Many predators are averse to attacking ants and many palatable arthropods are Batesian mimics of ants. We considered whether aggregating Batesian mimics of ants can become more repelling to ant-averse predators by, as a group, resembling groups of ants (collective mimicry). Myrmarachne melanotarsa is a gregarious ant-like jumping spider (Salticidae) that resembles and associates with the ant Crematogaster sp. We used three large ant-averse salticids as predators in experiments. Besides M. melanotarsa and Crematogaster we used midges (Chaoborus sp.) and a small nonant-like, but gregarious, salticid (Menemerus sp.) as prey. The predators readily attacked both live midges and the nonant-like …

Instream Flows And The Public Trust, Timothy M. Mulvaney Jul 2009

Instream Flows And The Public Trust, Timothy M. Mulvaney

Faculty Scholarship

Empirical evidence suggests that diversion of instream flows for human use, coupled with the potential impacts of changing climatic conditions, is threatening the sustainability of aquatic life. Nonetheless, several states merely prevent stream flows from being reduced below the "7Q10 flow," or the average flow during the driest consecutive seven-day period that has a likelihood of recurring only once every ten years. Overwhelming scientific consensus suggests that 7Q10 merely preserves water quality standards by calculating the concentration of pollutants in point source discharges, without considering water quantity and numerous other core principles of instream management.

The protection of instream flows …

American Kestrel Reproduction: Evidence For The Selection Hypothesis And The Role Of Dispersal, Karen Steenhof, Julie A. Heath Jul 2009

American Kestrel Reproduction: Evidence For The Selection Hypothesis And The Role Of Dispersal, Karen Steenhof, Julie A. Heath

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many hypotheses attempt to explain why younger, less experienced birds have relatively low reproductive output. We evaluated reproductive patterns of marked American Kestrels Falco sparverius nesting in boxes in southwestern Idaho from 1992 to 2006 to test predictions of these hypotheses. Results were consistent with the selection (differential mortality) hypothesis and did not support the constraint, restraint or recruitment hypotheses. Most known-age Kestrels nested in their first year of life, and there was no apparent short-term or long-term reproductive advantage to delayed breeding. The number of years that Kestrels nested in study area boxes ranged from 1 to 6 years, …

Camponeses: Brazil’S Peasant Movement In Historical Perspective (1946–2004), Cliff Welch Jul 2009

Camponeses: Brazil’S Peasant Movement In Historical Perspective (1946–2004), Cliff Welch

Peer Reviewed Articles

Comparison of the histories of three leading peasant organizations in the Pontal do Paranapanema region of Brazil—the Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCB) from 1945 to 1964, the Confederação Nacional de Trabalhadores na Agricultura (CONTAG) from 1964 to 1984, and the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem-Terra (MST) from 1984 to 2004—suggests that continuity is as important as change in understanding Brazilian peasant movements. The MST has been considered a “new social movement” in that it has eschewed partisan politics, incorporated families as members rather than just male heads of household, had a national scope and a participatory decision-making structure, and been …

New Designs For Participatory Research: Modified Photoethnography And The Personal Resource Systems Management (Prsm) Model, Cindy Beacham, Barbara Mcfall

Journal of Youth Development

Learning environments significantly influence student behaviors, academic success, school attendance and participation, all of which are problematic today. Less than half of high school students surveyed in 2005 would select the same high school again if given the opportunity, and only 38% agreed that the support they get at school encourages them to learn more. Pursuing increased educational effectiveness, this paper discusses a study that gathered and evaluated middle and high school students’ concepts of ideal student-centered learning environments in selected classrooms. This multi-method, participatory approach put cameras in student hands and ask them to photograph elements desired in their …
