The Role Of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor In Blood Pressure Regulation And Vascular Homeostasis, Nan Zhang
The Role Of Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor In Blood Pressure Regulation And Vascular Homeostasis, Nan Zhang
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
High blood pressure and endothelial dysfunction are two systemic abnormalities of the cardiovascular system that extensively contribute to the etiology of cardiovascular diseases, which represent the number one killer in the United States for decades and become more severe in developing countries. Previous studies have indicated that aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), a transcription factor primarily mediating xenobiotic metabolism, plays an important role in cardiovascular development and physiology. AHR deficient mice have been demonstrated to develop hypotension at sea level and oxygen-dependent, endothelin-1 (ET-1) mediated hypertension at mild altitude. However, after generations at mild altitude, AHR deficient mice appear to acclimate …

Poor wound healing is a serious medical issue of particular concern in the elderly and people with diabetes. One major obstacle for these patients to achieve complete wound healing is incomplete reepithelialization which is necessary for restoration of barrier function. One molecule that has promising therapeutic value for promoting reepithelialization is epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Using a squamous cell carcinoma cell line (SCC 12F) that expresses moderate levels of EGFR, we investigated the contributions of EGFR activation to reepithelialization, and specifically its roles in modulation of cell-cell junctions. Decreased cell-cell adhesion mediated by adherens junctions and desmosomes is necessary …

Intricacy Unveiled: Metaphor, Models, And (Mis)Understanding In The Behavioral Sciences, Scott L. Horton
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Metaphor use stands as a striking example of the creative drive of humans, with its ability to render understandable that which is highly convoluted, making it a natural partner and tool of the behavioral sciences. Touching briefly on the nature and efficiency of metaphor, I explore that tenacious and fertile connection vis a vis historic and current conceptualizations and contexts, and preparation for the counseling relationship.

Communication and collaboration are very important topics in the domain of
Knowledge Management. Knowledge, which exists within the employees of an
organisation, can be extracted and harnessed effectively to become an extremely
valuable asset to the ongoing business goals and objectives of the organisation. This
embedded knowledge must be released in an appropriate manner in order for it to be
usable and, it has been shown that dialogue and discussion through the use of an online
tool, enables this release and re-use of vital concepts and knowledge.
This research investigates the area of communication and knowledge sharing amongst
disparate Irish …

Global CWD Repository
Welcome to the 8th edition of To Walk The Earth In Safety. Although we have seen real progress in combating the threat of mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW), conflicts persist, and the destabilizing effects of other weapons threaten peace and stability around the world.
The United States works with other nations to clean up the debris of war, combat trafficking in small arms and light weapons, and improve the security and management of munitions stockpiles. Catastrophic explosions at munitions storage facilities in populated areas have become a growing problem and have the potential to create more casualties than …

Modeling And Analysis Of Biological Populations, Joan Lubben
Modeling And Analysis Of Biological Populations, Joan Lubben
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Asymptotic and transient dynamics are both important when considering the future population trajectory of a species. Asymptotic dynamics are often used to determine whether the long-term trend results in a stable, declining or increasing population and even provide possible directions for management actions. Transient dynamics are important for estimating invasion speed of non-indigenous species, population establishment after releasing biocontrol agents, or population management after a disturbance like fire. We briefly describe here the results in this thesis.
(1) We consider asymptotic dynamics using discrete time linear population models of the form n(t + 1) = An(t) where …

Cloaked Websites: Propaganda, Cyber-Racism And Epistemology In The Digital Era, Jessie Daniels
Publications and Research
This article analyzes cloaked websites, which are sites published by individuals or groups who conceal authorship in order to disguise deliberately a hidden political agenda. Drawing on the insights of critical theory and the Frankfurt School, this article examines the way in which cloaked websites conceal a variety of political agendas from a range of perspectives. Of particular interest here are cloaked white supremacist sites that disguise cyber-racism. The use of cloaked websites to further political ends raises important questions about knowledge production and epistemology in the digital era. These cloaked sites emerge within a social and political context in …
Dicer Is Required For Female Reproductive Tract Development And Fertility In The Mouse, Gabriel Gonzalez, Richard R Behringer
Dicer Is Required For Female Reproductive Tract Development And Fertility In The Mouse, Gabriel Gonzalez, Richard R Behringer
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Dicer encodes a riboendonuclease required for microRNA biosynthesis. Dicer was inactivated in Müllerian duct mesenchyme-derived tissues of the reproductive tract of the mouse, using an Amhr2-Cre allele. Although Amhr2-Cre; Dicer conditional mutant males appeared normal and were fertile, mutant females were infertile. In adult mutant females, there was a reduction in the size of the oviducts and uterine horns. The oviducts were less coiled compared to controls and cysts formed at the isthmus near the uterotubal junction. Unfertilized, degenerate oocytes were commonly found within these cysts, indicating a defect in embryo transit. Beads transferred into the mutant oviduct failed to …
The Impacts Of Biofuels On Transportation And Logistics In Indiana, Frank Dooley, Wallace Tyner, Kumares C. Sinha, Justin Quear, Lydia Cox, Maria Cox
The Impacts Of Biofuels On Transportation And Logistics In Indiana, Frank Dooley, Wallace Tyner, Kumares C. Sinha, Justin Quear, Lydia Cox, Maria Cox
JTRP Technical Reports
Like the rest of the US, the ethanol industry in Indiana has rapidly expanded, growing from one plant in 2006 to a projected 13 by 2010. One result of this expansion is that truck and rail traffic flows in Indiana are shifting, as more corn and beans are processed in state. Most of the change in transportation requirements will likely be concentrated in regions of Indiana where the ethanol plants are constructed.
The goal of this work was to determine how the entry of ethanol and biodiesel plants changes the inbound and outbound transportation flows of corn, soybeans, DDGS, and …

Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper describes the completion of a "comprehensive study of regionalism" that was conducted by a joint team of economists and economic development specialists for the Economic Development Administration (EDA). The project consisted of two main activities: an examination of the factors associated with economic development success and the creation of a practical interactive tool for EDA project assessment and comparison. Findings from surveys, interviews, and project case studies are discussed in terms of their support for a positive relationship between successful economic development efforts and factors such as leadership and private investment. Also, the authors discuss the creation of …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Communication is both process and art. It is the vehicle through which we share our thoughts and feelings as much as it is a creative activity resulting in the production of new meanings and ways of knowing. While we commonly understand communication as a continual process of reception and interpretation, new electronic media continue to extend our knowledge of what constitutes communication and how we characterize communication. Challenging the longstanding assumptions of fixed and positioned ways of knowing, studies with new electronic media accentuate the burgeoning contrast between the authority and stability of the written word and the mutability of …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
“Everything in the whole story should arise from the whole cast of the author’s mind. We must write for children out of those elements in our own imagination which we share with children: differing from our child readers not by any less, or less serious, interest in the things we handle, but by the fact that we have other interests which children would not share with us. The matter of our story should be a part of the habitual furniture of our minds.” —C.S. Lewis, “On Three Ways of Writing for Children”

War, Peace, And The Landscape Of The Inka Heartland, Terence N. D'Altroy, Darryl A. Wilkinson
War, Peace, And The Landscape Of The Inka Heartland, Terence N. D'Altroy, Darryl A. Wilkinson
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article argues that the conservation of cultural heritage in the Inka imperial heartland must move beyond the protection of discrete archaeological sites to encompass the broader landscape, which includes intangible elements such as social memory, power dynamics, and historical narratives. The authors advocate for a holistic approach to heritage management that integrates the physical environment with the cultural and historical contexts that give landscapes their significance.

Place-Making As Contemplative Practice, Douglas E. Christie
Place-Making As Contemplative Practice, Douglas E. Christie
Theological Studies Faculty Works
In an age of chronic and widespread displacement, the work of place-making—the discovery and cultivation of a sense of place—has gained new significance and meaning. In this essay, I propose to consider how place-making can be understood as a form of contemplative practice. Anthropologist Keith Basso describes place-making as a work of “retrospective world-building” that enables a person or community to see a place in all its richness and complexity and hold that place in the imagination. Following the work of photographer Robert Adams, I want to suggest that what makes this work contemplative in character is the integration and …

If the number of individuals in a population oversubscribes a resource then competition can occur and may lead to injurious fighting, if the cost of fighting is lower than the value of the resource. Here we consider how weapon size (nematocyst length), body size (pedal disc diameter, wet weight) and number of injuries inflicted are related to fighting ability in the common intertidal beadlet anemone, Actinia equina. 160 anemones were utilised from two sites, within two size classes, to engage in contest behaviour. There was no significant effect on pedal disc diameter, wet weight or nematocyst length of the outcome …
Hemispheric Interaction In Simple Reaction Time As A Function Of Handedness, Emily Howe
Hemispheric Interaction In Simple Reaction Time As A Function Of Handedness, Emily Howe
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Efficiency of hemispheric interactions in simple reaction time as a function of hand preference was investigated. Research suggests that left-handed individuals have more efficient hemispheric interactions. This is possibly due to their need to transfer information between hemispheres more frequently than right-handed individuals, a result of differing patterns of cerebral dominance explained by Annett’s (1998) right shift theory. Forty-eight right-handers and 48 non-right-handers, assessed by the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (Oldfield, 1971) completed the study. Mean reaction times for the Poffenberger paradigm (Poffenberger, 1912) were used to calculate the crossed-uncrossed-difference (CUD); a measure of inter-hemispheric transfer time. Analyses revealed a non-significant …

The Effects Of Bisphenol A On In-Vitro Cell Viability Of Mammalian Cell Line By Neutral Red Assay, Aidan J. Mcglinchey
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Bisphenol-A (BPA), a known oestrogenic endocrine disruptor, has many effects in-vivo. However, most studies on its effects concentrate on this oestrogenic property and not on direct cytotoxicity. An in-vitro approach was taken here, showing that BPA has a dose-dependent effect on the viability of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO-K1) cells. Concentrations at which BPA directly generates cytotoxic effects were investigated by exposing CHO-K1 to BPA for 48 hours at 37oC and their viability assessed by their ability to take up and retain the neutral red staining agent. Cells were exposed to tenfold dilutions of BPA from 1x10-4M to 1x10-9M and viability …
Meadow Brown (Maniola Jurtina) And Marbled White (Melanargia Galathea) Butterfly Populations On Two Managed Grasslands In Devon, Uk: Implications For Conservation, Paul G. Winney
The Plymouth Student Scientist
This paper reports on the effects of a management regime on two grassland sites in an agricultural landscape by using butterflies as indicators over a six-year period. This paper investigates what effects the management has had on two groups of phytophagous butterflies; habitat generalists (polyphagous) and habitat specialists (oligophagous). It identifies two species to study, the meadow brown Maniola jurtina and marbled white Melanargia galathea. The study was conducted in Devon, UK in 2007. Butterfly and plant communities were studied by transect counts on two differently managed grassland sites (Site A: 8 ha and Site B: 4.04 ha). A total …
