Creation Of Artifacts As A Vehicle For Design Research, Nithikul Nimkulrat Aug 2009

Creation Of Artifacts As A Vehicle For Design Research, Nithikul Nimkulrat

Nordes Conference Series

Although material artifacts, with their forms and meanings, have manifested the significance of craft design practice, their role and the role of their creative productions in design research have rarely been discussed. This article aims to uncover how the creation of artifacts can serve as a vehicle of design research. My doctoral research, which explores the relationship between a physical material and artistic expression in the creation of textile art and design, is given as the example. The research emphasizes the utilization of the researcher’s design artifacts and their productions as a vehicle of theoretical inquiry. The study offers the …

Staging Urban Atmospheres In Interaction Design, Peter Dalsgaard, Karen Johanne Kortbek Aug 2009

Staging Urban Atmospheres In Interaction Design, Peter Dalsgaard, Karen Johanne Kortbek

Nordes Conference Series

In this article, we address the concept of atmosphere from a designerly perspective and discuss challenges facing interaction designers who seek to stage atmospheres in urban settings. We outline previous academic works on atmosphere and the emergence of atmosphere as a subject-space encounter, primarily on the basis on Gernot Böhme’s notion of atmosphere. We then present the argument that, in the field of interaction design, it is worthwhile to expand an analytical and operational understanding of atmosphere to encompass technological, social and temporal concerns, as these are central to interaction design discourse. In order to explore this expanded notion of …

Understanding Affective Engagement As A Resource In Interaction Design, Jonas Fritsch Aug 2009

Understanding Affective Engagement As A Resource In Interaction Design, Jonas Fritsch

Nordes Conference Series

This article proposes affective engagement as a possible resource when designing interactive environments. The notion of affect and affective experience as developed by Brian Massumi in cultural theory is presented as a theoretical foundation for conceptualizing experience in interaction design. In particular, it is shown how Massumi provides a non-informational understanding of affect as distinct from emotions. Instead, Massumi offers a processual and relational account of affective experience as a part of dynamic events of becoming. Through an analysis of the interactive installation Touched Echoes, the concept of affective engagement is introduced to inform the practical work when designing experiential …

Will There Be Enough Water To Grow Enough Food?, David Molden Aug 2009

Will There Be Enough Water To Grow Enough Food?, David Molden

Office of Research and Economic Development: Publications

Global food production has outpaced population growth since 1960, but meeting growing demand for food and water in the future will be challenging. "There is an intimate link between food and water," said David Molden, deputy director general for research at the International Water Management Institute and an internationally known expert on water management. In his public lecture, "Will there be Enough Water to Grow Enough Food?" Aug. 27 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Molden said the answer to this critical question is "no, unless we change the way we think and act on water issues."

Paralimbic Structural Abnormalities In Psychopathy : A Voxel-Based Morphometry Study, Lora Cope Aug 2009

Paralimbic Structural Abnormalities In Psychopathy : A Voxel-Based Morphometry Study, Lora Cope

Psychology ETDs

Previous functional neuroimaging studies of psychopathy have demonstrated abnormal functioning in several brain regions associated with emotion and decision-making, including amygdala, orbital frontal cortex, insula, cingulate, anterior superior temporal gyrus, and parahippocampal gyrus. However, investigations of structural differences in these regions are sparse. The relation between structural abnormalities and psychopathy was investigated using Voxel-Based Morphometry (VBM) and the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R). Factor analysis of the PCL-R has revealed a two factor model that was utilized here. Seventy-seven participants from a community sample of substance users were scanned using high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging and assessed for psychopathy using the PCL-R. …

Longitudinal Changes In Ventricle Volume Following Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury : Predictors Of Cognitive Function One Year Later, Lauren Parks Aug 2009

Longitudinal Changes In Ventricle Volume Following Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury : Predictors Of Cognitive Function One Year Later, Lauren Parks

Psychology ETDs

Ventricular enlargement in pediatric TBI is a common observation in clinical practice, yet volumetric studies of ventricle volume are sparse. In this study, MRIs and neuropsychological testing were performed on children who had sustained a traumatic brain injury (n=38) and control children (n=34) between the ages of six and eighteen years. Children with traumatic brain injury (mean GCS=9.0) were evaluated at two time points (time one: mean=55 days post injury, n=38; time two: mean=324 days post injury, n=21). Results revealed that ventricular enlargement and deficits in cognitive function were present in the TBI group during both the semi-acute (<6 months post injury) and chronic (>6 …

Applications Of Statistical Mechanics And Nonlinear Science To Ecological Phenomena, Luis Felipe Gonzalez-Palacio Aug 2009

Applications Of Statistical Mechanics And Nonlinear Science To Ecological Phenomena, Luis Felipe Gonzalez-Palacio

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The application of techniques widely used in physics to explain biological phenomena has become a very successful endeavor in the past few decades. Such techniques include, but are not limited to, kinetic equations and nonlinear dynamics. We present an overview of some current topics of interest in ecology that use such techniques to explain and predict a wide array of phenomena. Several successful models are reviewed. We present the results of our analyses of two datasets of repeated sessions of mark-recaptures of the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus (Rodentia: Muridae), the host and reservoir of Sin Nombre virus (Bunyaviridae: Hantavirus). The …

Yy1 Is Autoregulated Through Its Own Dna-Binding Sites, Jeong D. Kim, Sungryul Yu, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

Background: The transcription factor Yin Yang 1 (YY1) is a ubiquitously expressed, multifunctional protein that controls a large number of genes and biological processes in vertebrates. As a general transcription factor, the proper levels of YY1 protein need to be maintained for the normal function of cells and organisms. However, the mechanism for the YY1 homeostasis is currently unknown. Results: The current study reports that the YY1 gene locus of all vertebrates contains a cluster of its own DNA-binding sites within the 1st intron. The intact structure of these DNA-binding sites is absolutely necessary for transcriptional activity of the YY1 …

Using Control Charts For Computer-Aided Diagnosis Of Brain Images, Sumner Williams Iv Aug 2009

Using Control Charts For Computer-Aided Diagnosis Of Brain Images, Sumner Williams Iv

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

We consider a novel application of quality control charts to brain scans performed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although our primary focus is on volume measures resulting from brain scans, issues related to the MRI scanner are also considered. The project evaluates a population of healthy control subjects using control charts to assess the MRIs obtained for the subjects. The results demonstrate our ability to automatically detect brain volumes that are statistical outliers, and can provide a potential cost savings of 10% for a moderately sized study. More importantly, our applied results will increase the sensitivity of tests from comparisons …

Dissecting Disgust : An Investigation Of The Validity Of The Three Domain Disgust Scale, Joshua Tybur Aug 2009

Dissecting Disgust : An Investigation Of The Validity Of The Three Domain Disgust Scale, Joshua Tybur

Psychology ETDs

Research on the emotion disgust, and particularly individual differences in disgust sensitivity, has exploded in the past 15 years. However, most of this research has been based on outdated theory and poorly designed instruments. Tybur et al., (2009) suggested that past theoretical perspectives on disgust should best be updated in light of an evolutionary perspective, and measurement of disgust sensitivity should be developed based on an evolutionarily informed theory. After suggesting that disgust should be categorized along domains related to pathogens, sexuality, and morality, they introduced the Three Domain Disgust Scale, a new measure of individual differences in disgust sensitivity. …

Friend, Foe, Or Other? Monsters And Identity On The Odyssean Sea, Daniel Bellum Aug 2009

Friend, Foe, Or Other? Monsters And Identity On The Odyssean Sea, Daniel Bellum

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The sea upon which Odysseus wanders in Homer's Odyssey is a chaotic and unpredictable place, empty of historical non-Greek cultures, but full of sea creatures, monsters, and deities eager to ensnare and devour the long-suffering hero. However, the Mediterranean of the Archaic Age that produced the Odyssey was a well-charted sea, where Greeks frequently interacted with foreigners. This thesis approaches the sea in the Odyssey as a mythic borderland, a medium for conceptualized representations of actual intercultural exchanges between archaic Greeks and other cultures of the ancient Mediterranean. Further, using postcolonial theory, this study attempts to understand how the various …
