Assessment Of The Reliability Of The Diagnosis Of Chagas Disease By Indigenous Promotores Of The Amazon Basin In Ecuador, Summer Nguyen
Assessment Of The Reliability Of The Diagnosis Of Chagas Disease By Indigenous Promotores Of The Amazon Basin In Ecuador, Summer Nguyen
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, is the most important vector-borne disease in Latin America. It is estimated that 16 to 18 million people are infected with Chagas disease and some 50,000 people die each year. In endemic countries, people living in rural areas are at greatest risk for acquiring infection. Ecuador is one of these countries, and it is estimated that between 2.4-3.8 million people in Ecuador are exposed to Chagas disease, primarily in the Eastern endemic coastal region. The indigenous people of the Amazon region in Ecuador have historically been protected from Chagas disease due …
Development Of A Potential Vaccine For Asthma Using Ige And Virus Like Particles, Fernando Monreal, Bryce Chackerian
Development Of A Potential Vaccine For Asthma Using Ige And Virus Like Particles, Fernando Monreal, Bryce Chackerian
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Highly dense, repetitive antigens such as virus particles induce strong immune responses. Correspondingly, Virus Like Particles (VLPs), which consist of the viral structural proteins, can be used as molecular scaffolds to increase the antigenicity of normally poorly immunogenic antigens. This ability to elicit strong antibody responses is not limited to foreign antigens, but also to self-antigens, which are normally subject to B-cell tolerance. The intention of this proposal is to develop a system for rapid identification of asthma vaccine candidates based on potent immunogenicity of antigens (IgE) displayed in dense repetitive arrays on virus-like particles. The technology is based on …

BACKGROUND: Neuroinflammation contributes to the pathophysiology of acute CNS injury, including traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although prostaglandin lipid mediators of inflammation contribute to a variety of inflammatory responses, their importance in neuroinflammation is not clear. There are conflicting reports as to the efficacy of inhibiting the enzymes required for prostaglandin formation, cyclooxygenase (COX) -1 and COX-2, for improving outcomes following TBI. The purpose of the current study was to determine the role of the COX isoforms in contributing to pathological processes resulting from TBI by utilizing mice deficient in COX-1 or COX-2.
RESULTS: Following a mild controlled cortical impact injury, …
Non-Foster Matching Of An Rfid Antenna, Nedime Pelin Yalcin
Non-Foster Matching Of An Rfid Antenna, Nedime Pelin Yalcin
Theses
In this thesis, novel designs of radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag antennas with better matching characteristics to achieve extended range for passive tags have been investigated in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band. A variety of cavitybacked/coupled microstrip dipole antennas in 915 MHz range were considered. Additionally, a negative impedance converter designed to cancel out antenna's input capacitance at resonance frequency and to produce the real antenna input impedance was designed, simulated and implemented for an RFID antenna. Numerical simulations have been carried out using ORCAD software package (Cadence), ADS software package (Agilent) and HFSS software package (ANSYS/ANSOFT Inc). Antennas have been …

Inventing New Cars: Analysis Of Chimeric Antigen Receptor Gene-Targeted T Cells Modified To Overcome Regulatory T Cell Suppression In The Tumor Microenvironment, James Lee
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Human T cells may be genetically modified to express targeted chimeric antigen receptors (CARs). We have previously demonstrated that T cells modified to express a CAR specific to the B cell tumor antigen CD19, termed 19-28z, successfully eradicate systemic human CD19+ tumors in SCID-Beige mice. While these results are encouraging, this xenogeneic tumor model fails to address potential limitations of this therapeutic approach in the clinical setting wherein these modified T cells encounter a hostile tumor microenvironment. Specifically, these models fail to address potential effector T cell inhibition mediated by endogenous regulatory T cells (Tregs). To investigate the role of …
The Theoretical Foundations Of Wilderness Therapy, Sara Smithson
The Theoretical Foundations Of Wilderness Therapy, Sara Smithson
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
While an ever-growing number of studies have demonstrated that wilderness therapy can be very effective in facilitating emotional and behavioral change in at risk adolescents (Russell, 2003; 2005), a lack of understanding persists both within and outside of the wilderness therapy community regarding why and how wilderness therapy works. This study addresses these important questions by exploring the theoretical foundations of wilderness therapy and their relationship to practice. Conceptualization of wilderness therapy practice, theory, and process is approached through consideration of existing definitions of the treatment model as well as the field's characteristics and demographics. An overview of ongoing program …

Game Engine Architecture : A Comprehensive View, Donald Kehoe
Game Engine Architecture : A Comprehensive View, Donald Kehoe
Theses
Game development is an ever growing interdisciplinary field. A variety of different skill sets need to come together to create a professional game. These range from art, audio and design through programming and development. It is difficult to isolate the different disciplines in game development since every aspect of the game is co-dependent on everything else. Even in the programming domain there are a number of sub-disciplines that a game can require such as physics programming, environmental programming, artificial intelligence and programming the core game engine, A game can even be developed in a number of different ways depending on …

Distinction Of The Memory B Cell Response To Cognate Antigen Versus Bystander Inflammatory Signals, Micah J. Benson, Raul Elgueta, William Schpero, Michael Molloy, Weijun Zhang, Edward Usherwood, Randolph J. Noelle
Distinction Of The Memory B Cell Response To Cognate Antigen Versus Bystander Inflammatory Signals, Micah J. Benson, Raul Elgueta, William Schpero, Michael Molloy, Weijun Zhang, Edward Usherwood, Randolph J. Noelle
Dartmouth Scholarship
The hypothesis that bystander inflammatory signals promote memory B cell (BMEM) self- renewal and differentiation in an antigen-independent manner is critically evaluated herein. To comprehensively address this hypothesis, a detailed analysis is presented examining the response profiles of B-2 lineage B220 + IgG + BMEM toward cognate protein antigen in comparison to bystander inflammatory signals. After in vivo antigen encounter, quiescent BMEM clonally expand. Surprisingly, proliferating BMEM do not acquire germinal center (GC) B cell markers before generating daughter BMEM and differentiating into plasma cells or form structurally identifiable GCs. In striking contrast to …

Social Navimation: Engaging Interfaces In Social Media, Jon Olav Eikenes
Social Navimation: Engaging Interfaces In Social Media, Jon Olav Eikenes
Nordes Conference Series
Social media are now an integrated part of culture and digitally mediated social activities. Screen-based devices now employ sophisticated graphics including visual movement on a variety of platforms. This article explores how visually dynamic interfaces can enhance social media applications. A socio-cultural view on communication and interaction design is combined with a practice-based research approach incorporating design production with textual analysis. The term social navimation is introduced and applied in the analysis of multimodal interfaces. A set of semiotic resources are identified that should be of interest for the practice and theory of dynamic interfaces and interaction design.
Peepholes As Means Of Engagement In Interaction Design, Christian Dindler, Peter Dalsgaard
Peepholes As Means Of Engagement In Interaction Design, Christian Dindler, Peter Dalsgaard
Nordes Conference Series
We present and discuss the concept of peepholes as a means for creating engaging interactions. By peepholes, we refer to aspects of interactive artifacts and environments that utilize the tension between what is hidden and what is revealed to foster engagement. As a foundation for discussing the qualities of peepholes, we outline a pragmatist perspective on engagement, emphasising the reciprocal relation between people, technology, and environment. We articulate peepholes as an example of a concrete means of engagement. Through a range of examples and two design cases, we explore peepholes as a means of engagement and discuss the pragmatist conception …

Exploring Environmental Dimensions: On Sustainability As An Architectural Problem; Why It Is Not Enough To Discuss Space And Time Only, Maria Davidova
Exploring Environmental Dimensions: On Sustainability As An Architectural Problem; Why It Is Not Enough To Discuss Space And Time Only, Maria Davidova
Nordes Conference Series
My research aims to explore how architecture responds to environmental input. It claims that this to a large degree is done today by “add-on” technology, e.g. sound environment is modified with specialized dampening materials, and climatic issues are addressed with increasingly complex and energy consuming ventilation systems. The conceptual and/or artistic architectural expressions are often not approaching those aspects in direct consideration (except i.e. project "Morpho-Ecologies", Responsive or Performative Architectures). As a critique of this division of environmental criteria from the architectural overall performance the research seeks to demonstrate and systematize an integral approach where the environmental responses are met …
Entangled Matter: Thinking Differently About Materials In Design, Maja Van Der Velden, Tone Bratteteig, Sisse Finken
Entangled Matter: Thinking Differently About Materials In Design, Maja Van Der Velden, Tone Bratteteig, Sisse Finken
Nordes Conference Series
What role do materials play in the communication of information in a public space? In this article we look at a metro station in Oslo and focus on how and where messages, such as posters, graffiti, and commercial advertisements, are connected to the station’s surfaces. How to understand this relationship between materials, surfaces, and messages? In a discussion of representational and ecological perspectives on the properties of materials, we propose to understand the station as a zone of entanglement. This enables us to see how the realities of the station, including the properties of its materials, are constantly produced in …
Transport Design For Extreme Environment: Methodological Exploration (With Reference To Polar Regions), Svetlana Usenyuk
Transport Design For Extreme Environment: Methodological Exploration (With Reference To Polar Regions), Svetlana Usenyuk
Nordes Conference Series
Extreme environment or extreme case is an aggregate of circumstances which exceed the limits of the common and create serious difficulties for vital activities or render them impossible [12]. The key features of the extreme environment are the lack of alternatives, absolute maximum of tension, synergy in the cooperation of negative factors, etc. In this case, all antagonisms related to the ‘tangible world’ (‘world of artefacts’, i.e. material environment) become especially apparent. Moreover, the extreme conditions are a specific (and the most objective) filter which lets through only things irreproachable in the performance of their functions. Here is a typical …
