Rules For Becoming A Graceful Woman: Rhetorical Analysis Of The Japanese Self-Help Book Grace Of Women, Kaori Yamada Sep 2009

Rules For Becoming A Graceful Woman: Rhetorical Analysis Of The Japanese Self-Help Book Grace Of Women, Kaori Yamada

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

People buy and read books to gain something they lack in their lives. One might read a novel to have fun, one might read a philosophy book to rethink his/her worldview, or one might read a how-to book to learn an easy process for self-improvement. Self-help books, in particular, are explicit instruction manuals for achieving personal and relational well being (Zimmerman, Holm, and Haddock 122). By analyzing popular self-help books, one can discover what people believe they might be lacking.

Protecting The Mature Mind, Julie O'Connor Sep 2009

Protecting The Mature Mind, Julie O'Connor

New Science

One of the major unsolved mysteries of aging two hormones thought to influence the brain’s MRI scanner reveal that older participants had is why some people age gracefully with little to no memory or cognitive dysfunction, while others are afflicted with debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. An adult brain contains about 100 billion nerve cells – neurons - that branch out and connect to more than 100 trillion points. Signals traveling through the neurons form the basis of thoughts, feelings and memories. It is these cells that are destroyed by Alzheimer’s disease, leading to tissue …

Turning Down Tinnitus: Giving Veterans Their Peace And Quiet, Amy Oprean Sep 2009

Turning Down Tinnitus: Giving Veterans Their Peace And Quiet, Amy Oprean

New Science

For many people, it’s a temporary annoyance – the high-pitched ringing in the ears that comes after working with a power saw, a leaf blower or perhaps most commonly, the unwanted souvenir from a concert. But while tinnitus may be a transient hassle for many, there is another group of people for which it’s a permanent and debilitating phenomenon. Military personnel stationed in the warzones of Iraq and Afghanistan experience the “phantom sound” of tinnitus much like civilians do, but for troops, the perpetual exposure to roadside bombs, gunfire, and rocket-propelled grenades exacerbates the condition to the point of no …

The Effectiveness Of Computer-Assisted Instruction In Developmental Mathematics, Kathy Dye Spradlin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Colleges and universities are trying alternative instructional approaches to improve the teaching of developmental mathematics with the goal of increasing the number of students who have the skills and knowledge required for college-level math courses and for the twenty-first century workforce. Computers and the internet make possible new methods of delivering instruction so students will have choices of when, where, and how they learn math. The purpose of this study was to compare academic performance of students enrolled in a developmental mathematics course using traditional instruction, traditional instruction supplemented with computer-assisted instruction, and online distance learning. In addition, gender differences …

Speech, Silence And Female Adolescence In Carson Mccullers’ The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter And Angela Carter’S The Magic Toyshop, Catherine Martin Sep 2009

Speech, Silence And Female Adolescence In Carson Mccullers’ The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter And Angela Carter’S The Magic Toyshop, Catherine Martin

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper examines the relationship between adolescent female characters and silence in Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1940) and Angela Carter’s The Magic Toyshop (1967). The established body of criticism focusing on McCullers’ and Carter’s depictions of the female grotesque provides the theoretical framework for this paper, as I explore the implications of these ideas when applied to language and speech. In a white Western society, where a woman’s sexuality, appetite and articulation are controlled and suppressed, this paper asks: what options for expression are there, for women whose speech is always limited to their body, and …

Abuse Of Lower Castes In South India: The Institution Of Devadasi, Maria Costanza Torri Sep 2009

Abuse Of Lower Castes In South India: The Institution Of Devadasi, Maria Costanza Torri

Journal of International Women's Studies

The ‘devadasi’ system has been the object of several studies and is quite controversial. Some authors, particularly in the past associated the ‘devadasi’ with power and prestige, other, more lately, with degradation and prostitution. This article firstly explores the origin of ‘devadasi’ practice and its evolution over time as well as its religious and ritual meaning, while attempting to identify the main factors explaining the signification of the ‘devadasi’ system in the past. Secondly it analyses the social status and economic condition of ‘devadasis’ and draws a global view of the reasons why young girls are still today consecrated in …

A Study On The Empowerment Of Women Construction Workers As Masons In Tamil Nadu, India, Annette Barnabas, D. Joseph Anbarasu, Paul S. Clifford Sep 2009

A Study On The Empowerment Of Women Construction Workers As Masons In Tamil Nadu, India, Annette Barnabas, D. Joseph Anbarasu, Paul S. Clifford

Journal of International Women's Studies

The construction sector has the largest number of unorganised labourers in India next only to agricultural sector. Women form half the workforce and by choice or by design they are not allowed to acquire specific skills that may enable them to become masons. Women join as unskilled workers and remain unskilled till the end of their working life span. However, men get training and systematically upgrade their construction skills to graduate as masons, supervisors and contractors. A study was conducted on the career progress of 440 men construction workers and 440 women construction workers and 51 building contractors to find …

Changing The Canon: Chinua Achebe’S Women, The Public Sphere And The Politics Of Inclusion, Uzoechi Nwagbara Sep 2009

Changing The Canon: Chinua Achebe’S Women, The Public Sphere And The Politics Of Inclusion, Uzoechi Nwagbara

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper examines the subjugation of Nigerian women with regard to how their political marginalisation constricts the public sphere, the resource centre of public opinion, which strengthens the ideals of democracy and good governance. The political marginalisation of women in Nigeria is a rectilinear upshot of their low participation in government and politics necessitated by patriarchy. This patriarchal practice has animated the urgency of expanded public sphere as well as feminism, an ideological, aesthetic and cultural movement, steeped in agitating for the rights of women and expanding the frontiers of their participation in the political process. In the political novel …

Managing A Nation's Image During Crisis: A Study Of The Chinese Government's Image Repair Efforts In The “Made In China” Controversy, Peijuan Cai, Lee Pei Ting, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The image of a nation is crucial in the conduct of international relations (Wang, J. (2006). Managing national reputation and international relations in the global era: Public diplomacy revisited. Public Relations Review, 32, 91–96). A favorable image plays a critical role in asserting one's influence (Benoit, W. L., & Brinson, S. L. (1994). AT&T: “Apologies are not enough”. Communication Quarterly, 42, 75–88; Wang, J. (2006). Managing national reputation and international relations in the global era: Public diplomacy revisited. Public Relations Review, 32, 91–96). Often, strategic communication tools like public relations and media diplomacy are used to enhance a nation's image …

Modulation Of Long-Term Memory By Arousal In Alexithymia: The Role Of Interpretation, Kristy A. Nielson, Mitchell A. Meltzer Sep 2009

Modulation Of Long-Term Memory By Arousal In Alexithymia: The Role Of Interpretation, Kristy A. Nielson, Mitchell A. Meltzer

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Moderate physiological or emotional arousal induced after learning modulates memory consolidation, helping to distinguish important memories from trivial ones. Yet, the contribution of subjective awareness or interpretation of arousal to this effect is uncertain. Alexithymia, which is an inability to describe or identify one’s emotional and arousal states even though physiological responses to arousal are intact, provides a tool to evaluate the role of arousal interpretation. Participants scoring high and low on alexithymia (N = 30 each) learned a list of 30 words, followed by immediate recall. Participants then saw either an arousing (oral surgery) or neutral video (tooth …

Profiles Of Drug Endangered Children: Investigation In A Clinical Sample, Imanie Samanmali Wijayaratne Sep 2009

Profiles Of Drug Endangered Children: Investigation In A Clinical Sample, Imanie Samanmali Wijayaratne

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Despite the increase in children born prenatally exposed to methamphetamine, little is known about the cognitive and neuropsychological outcomes of these children. Research specific to prenatal-methamphetamine exposure is extremely limited and has been primarily restricted to rat studies. This research combined with the few studies examining children prenatally exposed to methamphetamine suggests that methamphetamine-exposure is associated with various cognitive and neuropsychological delays and is impacted by both biological and environmental factors. Given the scarcity of research in this area, the current study used archival data from a psychological assessment clinic to (1) describe the frequency of prenatal methamphetamine-exposure cases, (2) …

Why We Teach: Autobiographies Of Traditionally And Alternatively Certified Pre-Service Social Studies Teachers, Susan Santoli Sep 2009

Why We Teach: Autobiographies Of Traditionally And Alternatively Certified Pre-Service Social Studies Teachers, Susan Santoli

The Qualitative Report

This study describes the analysis of the social studies autobiographies of 46 students compiled over a 15 month period. Two major questions were addressed: (1) what motivational patterns are revealed in these autobiographies and (2) what differences and similarities exist in the autobiographies of students seeking alternative and traditional certification. Both groups noted the influence of family and other significant adults, and the influence of social studies teachers, both K-12 and postsecondary, in their decisions to pursue social studies teaching careers. There were more similarities than differences between the two groups. The autobiographies echoed influences that are found in the …

Advances In Progenitor Cell Therapy Using Scaffolding Constructs For Central Nervous System Injury, Peter A Walker, Kevin R Aroom, Fernando Jimenez, Shinil K Shah, Matthew T Harting, Brijesh S Gill, Charles S Cox

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Current clinical therapy is focused on optimization of the acute/subacute intracerebral milieu, minimizing continued cell death, and subsequent intense rehabilitation to ameliorate the prolonged physical, cognitive, and psychosocial deficits that result from TBI. Adult progenitor (stem) cell therapies have shown promise in pre-clinical studies and remain a focus of intense scientific investigation. One of the fundamental challenges to successful translation of the large body of pre-clinical work is the delivery of progenitor cells to the target location/organ. Classically used vehicles such as intravenous and …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, we evaluated the specificity, distribution, and sensitivity of Prevotella strain-based (PF163 and PigBac1) and methanogen-based (P23-2) PCR assays proposed to detect swine fecal pollution in environmental waters. The assays were tested against 222 fecal DNA extracts derived from target and nontarget animal hosts and against 34 groundwater and 15 surface water samples from five different sites. We also investigated the phylogenetic diversity of 1,340 "Bacteroidales" 16S rRNA gene sequences derived from swine feces, swine waste lagoons, swine manure pits, and waters adjacent to swine operations. Most swine fecal samples were positive for the host-specific Prevotella-based PCR assays …

Spatial Reconfigurations: Bodily Terrains And Their Suppression On The New York Waterfront: The Greenwich Village Piers 40-53 1936-1998, Mark Curley

Masters

There has been seismic change on the New York waterfront since World War II. The shipping industry of longshoremen on the rough docks, has given way to mothers with babies in a bucolic landscape. The former condition existed within Kristeva's theories of abjection (1982), and today we have a suppression of that abjection through the municipal authority of the Hudson River Park Act (1998). This control of space is integral to gentrification. The abject condition existed as a changing zone of spatial occupiers and colonies, who demarcated their territories as bodily terrains on the edge of the city. Due to …

A Vital Environment, Taesung Jeng Sep 2009

A Vital Environment, Taesung Jeng

Theses

Every day, nature is being used and is also being destroyed through over cutting and overgrazing of forests and grasslands because of the expansion of human numbers. The economic and material demands of growing villages and towns are not the causes but the results of human activity. What is the impact of the careless occupancy of so many of earth's human occupants? Are we turning everything in nature into something human-made and human used? My artworks emphasize how nature as a lay concept is changed by humans' desire for comfort and materialism. In addition, since human creation is another form …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The cytotoxicity of organometallic compounds iron(III)-, cobalt(III)-, manganese(II)-, and copper(II)-salophene (-SP) on platinum-resistant ovarian cancer cell lines was compared. Fe-SP displayed selective cytotoxicity (IC(50) at ~1 muM) against SKOV-3 and OVCAR-3 cell lines while Co-SP caused cytotoxic effects only at higher concentrations (IC(50) at 60 muM) and Cu-SP effects were negligible. High cytotoxicity of Mn-SP (30-60 muM) appeared to be nonspecific because the Mn-chloride salt reduced cell viability similarly. The effect of Fe-SP at 1 muM proved to be ovarian cancer cell selective when compared to a panel of cell lines derived from different tumors. The first irreversible step in …

Colors Of The Music, Meng-Tieh Fang Sep 2009

Colors Of The Music, Meng-Tieh Fang

Theses

It is a generation of high technology. Our daily life is full of computing in the aspects of work and leisure. Computing also influences on art, and now a computer can be a new form of representation. Artists use computers to create and show their art works, and viewers now not only view those art works but also involve in art works through the interactivity of a computer. Motion graphics are attractive. Flash based programs are rich in interaction. This project combines the two features to create a user driven art that promotes classical music to children and of course …
