Guided Inquiry Animations In General Chemistry, Larry Kolopajlo
Guided Inquiry Animations In General Chemistry, Larry Kolopajlo
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU
Many people have nightmares about their undergraduate chemistry experiences. I suspect, though, that if Larry Kolopajlo had been our teacher, this would not be the case. Larry's work in this chapter is motivated by his desire to see students achieve mastery in this challenging subject. Larry has developed an impressive collection of computerized animations that, for example, show students the movement of atoms in chemical reactions. By being able to observe what previously had been hidden aspects of the subject, students should be able to gain a deeper understanding of what is going on. This should help the students to …

Robustness Of Semiparametric Efficiency In Nearly-Correct Models For Two-Phase Samples, Thomas Lumley
Robustness Of Semiparametric Efficiency In Nearly-Correct Models For Two-Phase Samples, Thomas Lumley
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Augmented inverse-probability weighted (AIPW) estimators for incomplete-data models typically do not have full semiparametric efficiency, but do have model-robustness properties not shared by the efficient estimator. We examine the performance of efficient and AIPW estimators when the complete-data model is nearly correctly specified, in the sense that the misspecification is not reliably detectable from the data by any possible diagnostic or test. Asymptotic results for these nearly true models are obtained by representing them as sequences of misspecified models that are mutually contiguous with a correctly specified model. For some least favorable direction of model misspecification the bias in the …

Geometric Characterization Of Digital Objects: Algorithms And Applications To Image Analysis., Arindam Biswas Dr.
Geometric Characterization Of Digital Objects: Algorithms And Applications To Image Analysis., Arindam Biswas Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Several problems of characterizing a digital object, and particularly, those related to boundary description, have been studied in this thesis. New algorithms and their applications to various aspects of image analysis and retrieval have been reported. A combinatorial technique for constructing the outer and inner isothetic covers of a digital object has been developed. The resolution of the background 2D grid can be changed by varying the grid spacing, and this procedure can be used to extract shape and topological information about the object. Next, an algorithm has been designed for constructing the orthogonal (convex) hull of a digital object …

Juliana Sabine And Kathrine Kline Oral History Interview, Juliana Sabine, Kathrine Kline
LGBTQ+ Oral History Project
An oral history with two lesbians. One, going by the pseudonym Katherine Kline, grew up in the greater New York City area; the other going by the pseudonym Juliana Sabine, grew up in the greater Washington, D.C. area. They speak of growing up closeted and of Kline's parents try to "fix" her sexuality. They speak of growing up in the 1970s where it wasn't socially acceptable or safe to be out. Most of the interview focuses on life in the community: how they discovered it, relationships with neighbors, social events, et cetera. There is also a lengthy discussion about social …

From Mueller To Miller: Determining Standards For Decisions Regarding Critically Ill Newborns, Tanaz Farzan Danialifar
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
FROM MUELLER TO MILLER: DETERMINING STANDARDS FOR DECISIONS REGARDING CRITICALLY ILL NEWBORNS. Tanaz Farzan Danialifar (Sponsored by Geoffrey Miller). Section of Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. The controversy surrounding selective nontreatment of critically ill newborns has been ongoing for over three decades. Since ancient times ill, premature, or deformed infants have been treated discriminatorily, and infanticide has been a historically acceptable practice. With medical, moral, and legal progress, infanticide has disappeared and been replaced with selective nontreatment. This raises new ethical concerns such as best interests, quality of life, wrongful life, and parental …

Ventral Penile Papillae As A New Anatomical Structure: A Clinical-Epidemiological Study Among Iraqi Males, Khalifa E. Sharquie, Jamal R. Al-Rawi, Adil A. Noaimi, Munqithe M. Jabir
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Ventral Penile Papillae (VPP) are benign asymptomatic structures that are found on the skin of the ventral aspect of penile shaft of many adult males; yet, no frank record or description of them is found in the English medical literatures. OBJECTIVE: To hit light on the VPP, finds their frequency among circumcised Iraqi adult males, seeks about their associations with other skin conditions, and examines the histological picture. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty seven Iraqi circumcised adult males were included in this case descriptive ,comparative study which extended between July 2007-November 2007 was conducted in Department of Dermatology- Baghdad …

A Role For Rage System Activation In Preterm Birth, Margaret Ann Baumbusch
A Role For Rage System Activation In Preterm Birth, Margaret Ann Baumbusch
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a multiligand pattern recognition receptor involved in transducing endogenous damage associated stimuli into inflammatory responses. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), HMGB1 (amphoterin) and S100 proteins, such as S100B, are prototype RAGE ligands, while soluble RAGE (sRAGE), a product of RAGE activation, acts as a ligand scavenger and RAGE inhibitor. We propose that RAGE may play important yet distinct pathogenic roles in both inflammation-induced preterm birth and preeclampsia and that, while inflammation-induced preterm birth associates with fetal RAGE activation, preeclampsia induces a maternal state of RAGE activation. We sought to identify the …

SEPTEMBER 15, 2009 marked one year from the day American financial firm Lehman Brothers collapsed. The subsequent onslaught on the global financial system set in a recession of the magnitude not experienced since 1930.
Financial institutions considered rock solid such as AIG and Citibank came almost on the verge of collapse. The world economy contracted for the first time in decades. But a year later the ‘green shoots’ have started appearing and the consensus view is that the global economy is coming out of the storm.
Economic historians will take many years to fully analyse the causes of the crisis …

Hide & Seek: Objects Of Meaning, Amy Maguire Chidiac
Theses
This thesis project is to design a philosophy to create mindfulness in the user of an object. To exemplify the philosophy, the secondary goal is to design objects with these attributes. Objects that encourage mindfulness will be meaningful to the user. Meaningful objects will increase the enjoyment of everyday life. Research on psychology, cultural anthropology, brain function, Taoism, and Zen Buddhism help form the philosophy. The design philosophy developed consists of three criteria that when met will make an object encourage mindfulness in its user. The objects designed are a 5 Inch Utility Knife, a Hemisphere Mixing Bowl, and a …

As the demand for fresh water increases in central Florida to meet both public supply and irrigation needs, stormwater is increasingly being managed as a resource to help offset possible future declines in aquifer water levels. Water quality is an important consideration when using stormwater for recharge or harvesting. A constituent of recent concern is cyanobacteria (popularly known as blue-green algae) because some of these can produce toxins (cyanotoxins) that are detrimental to animal and human health. Microcystins are the most commonly found type of cyanotoxin in Florida and have been detected in a variety of rivers, natural lakes, and …
