Transformational Nursing Simulation: Bringing Life To Inanimate Objects For The Purpose Of Educating And Re-Igniting Passion, Pamela A. Torkkola
Transformational Nursing Simulation: Bringing Life To Inanimate Objects For The Purpose Of Educating And Re-Igniting Passion, Pamela A. Torkkola
Theses and Graduate Projects
A transformational nursing simulation program that incorporates a holistic approach in caring for the caregiver is the focus for a Master's Field Project paper. As an alternative to the construction of a generic nursing simulation center that is limited to the education of knowledge and skills, a larger vision centered in Margaret Newman's nursing theory, Health as Expanding Consciousness is proposed. Business models, an incremental approach and practical suggestions are offered in support of healthcare organizations working toward a Center for Nursing Arts and Sciences in times of economic challenge.

A New Fossil Species Of Stag Beetle From Dominican Republic Amber, With Australasian Connections (Coleoptera: Lucanidae), Robert E. Woodruff
A New Fossil Species Of Stag Beetle From Dominican Republic Amber, With Australasian Connections (Coleoptera: Lucanidae), Robert E. Woodruff
Insecta Mundi
The first New World amber member of the family Lucanidae is described from the Dominican Republic. Its age is presumed to be Miocene (20-30 million YBP). It is also the fourth known amber species, the second Miocene fossil species, the second fossil species in the subfamily Syndesinae, and the first species (fossil or extant) of Lucanidae from the entire Caribbean. It is especially interesting because it is a member of the Australasian genus Syndesus MacLeay. Other such disjunct Dominican amber insect fossils are also discussed.

Ethylene Dichloride Disruption Of Fertility In Male Mice, Harold J. Daigle, Derek N. Cole, J. Andrew Carlson, William R. Lee, Vincent L. Wilson
Faculty Publications
Ethylene dichloride (EDC) is a high use compound in chemical industry today. Although a potent alkylating agent and carcinogen, EDC has not been associated previously with adverse fertility consequences. Intraperitoneal 5 to 40 mg/kg once a day for five days in C57BL/6 mice rendered males infertile for 6 months and longer. Two of three mice treated with EDC at 5 mg/kg recovered to fertility after a 3 and 5-week sterile period, respectively. Significant testicular pathology was evident within 8 days post treatment with EDC, which progressed to resemble Sertoli Cell-Only syndrome. Although the observed effects on Leydig cell populations were …

Free fatty acids (FFA) induce hepatocyte lipoapoptosis by a c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)-dependent mechanism. However, the cellular processes by which JNK engages the core apoptotic machinery during lipotoxicity, especially activation of BH3-only proteins, remain incompletely understood. Thus, our aim was to determine whether JNK mediates induction of BH3-only proteins during hepatocyte lipoapoptosis. The saturated FFA palmitate, but not the monounsaturated FFA oleate, induces an increase in PUMA mRNA and protein levels. Palmitate induction of PUMA was JNK1-dependent in primary murine hepatocytes. Palmitate-mediated PUMA expression was inhibited by a dominant negative c-Jun, and direct binding of a phosphorylated c-Jun containing the …

Role Of Mammalian Ecdysoneless In Cell Cycle Regulation., Jun Hyun Kim, Channabasavaiah B. Gurumurthy, Mayumi Naramura, Ying Zhang, Andrew T. Dudley, Lynn Doglio, Hamid Band, Vimla Band
Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy
The Ecdysoneless (Ecd) protein is required for cell-autonomous roles in development and oogenesis in Drosophila, but the function of its evolutionarily conserved mammalian orthologs is not clear. To study the cellular function of Ecd in mammalian cells, we generated Ecd(lox/lox) mouse embryonic fibroblast cells from Ecd floxed mouse embryos. Cre-mediated deletion of Ecd in Ecd(lox/lox) mouse embryonic fibroblasts led to a proliferative block due to a delay in G(1)-S cell cycle progression; this defect was reversed by the introduction of human Ecd. Loss of Ecd led to marked down-regulation of E2F target gene expression. Furthermore, Ecd directly bound to Rb …
The Regulation Of Alternative Splicing By Oncogenic Signaling Pathways., Jacqueline Shultz
The Regulation Of Alternative Splicing By Oncogenic Signaling Pathways., Jacqueline Shultz
Theses and Dissertations
In the presented study, we demonstrate that the alternative splicing of caspase 9 was dysregulated in a large percentage of NSCLC tumors and cell lines. These findings led to the hypothesis that survival pathways activated by oncogenic mutation regulated this mechanism. Indeed, the oncogenic PI3-Kinase/Akt pathway was demonstrated to regulate the alternative splicing of caspase 9. Further mechanistic studies demonstrate that multiple Akt isoforms can regulate the alternative splicing of caspase 9 in NSCLC. Akt was additionally shown to mediate the exclusion of the exon 3,4,5,6 cassette of caspase 9 via the phospho-state of the RNA trans-factor, SRp30a. Mutagenesis studies …

Ode To The Communist Song, Zhang Lijia
Ode To The Communist Song, Zhang Lijia
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
The massive museum, a modern structure of grey bricks and white-painted cement, stands a little abruptly, halfway up Xiayun Mountain, in Fangshang County, in western skirts of Beijing. It is the ‘Without the Communist Party, There Would Be No New China Museum’, dedicated entirely to this revolutionary song.
On a recent sunny afternoon, when a friend and I descended – or should I say ascended as the mountain, at 2161 meter above sea level, is known as ‘the roof of Beijing’ – we found ourselves the only visitors. The spacious car park was empty. Yiaotangshang, a quiet mountain village, isn’t …
