Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: An experimental study was performed to evaluate the effect of CO_2 pneumoperitoneum on intra-abdominal (IA) and intra-esophageal (IE) pH. Material and methods: The study included 18 Wistar rats. In the control group (n = 6) a pH catheter was inserted into the peritoneal cavity via a left upper quadrant incision and another catheter was inserted into the lower esophagus via the oral route. Pre- and post-insufflation IA and IE pH were recorded every 5 min for 1 h. In the experimental groups, in addition to pH catheters, a 16-G catheter was inserted into the abdomen above the umbilicus. Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been used for many years due to their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. They have also been used for postoperative analgesia. We aimed to study the effects of etofenamate, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, on the healing of colonic anastomoses in rats. Materials and methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. Resection and anastomosis were performed on the distal colon. The etofenamate group received 30 mg/kg etofenamate and the control group received 0.1 mL of 0.9% NaCl intramuscularly daily. Bursting pressures of anastomoses and hydroxyproline levels of perianastomotic tissues were determined on days 3 and 7. …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Central to ethnographic construction and production of knowledge(s) is the fieldwork experience and the location of the knower. Anthropological fieldwork conventionally privileged knowing the Other and the going elsewhere. As a spatial practice, fieldwork refers to "a specific style, quality, and duration of dwelling"; that is distinguished from travel (Clifford 1997: 22). Territoriality of the field and prolonged immersion in the locality defined this fieldworker conducting fieldwork in the field (Gupta and Ferguson 1997). The growing acceptance and recognition of mobility among communities and the interface of the local and the global in everyday life of an individual …

Water Treatment: Keeping It Pure, Petros Katsioloudis
STEMPS Faculty Publications
The article discusses the importance of water treatment in providing quality and safe drinking water. A historical background of the U.S. federal regulation of drinking water quality is presented. It was found by the Public Health Service in 1969 that only 60 percent of the systems surveyed delivered water that met all the Public Health Service standards. Filtration and chlorination are also cited as an effective treatment techniques for protecting U.S. water supplies from harmful microbes. An overview of the process of water treatment is presented.

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
In coarse-textured soils, low water and nutrient holding capacity due to the high number of macropores limits crop growth. To minimize these limitations the application of various soil conditioners (SCs) has been extensively used in recent decades. The objective of this study was to investigate the influences of anionic polyacrylamide (PAM), cattle manure (M), vermicompost (VC), and biological sludge (BS) as organic SCs on mean weight diameter (MWD) of aggregates, water aggregate stability (WAS), pore size distribution (PRSD), and respiration activity (RA) of a sandy loam soil. PAM (0.25 and 0.5 g kg^{-1} of air-dried soil), M (12.5 and 25 …

Effect Of Superparasitism On The Development Of The Solitary Parasitoid Chelonus Oculator Panzer (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Hi̇lal Tunca, Neşet Kilinçer
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The egg-larval parasitoid Chelonus oculator Panzer (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a solitary endoparasitoid. The effect of superparasitism on the development of C. oculator was investigated on a host, Cadra cautella Walker (Lepidoptera : Pyralidae) at 25 °C, 60%-70% R.H., and 16:8 h (L:D) photoperiod. The development time of C. oculator from egg to adult was related to parasitism level from 42.5 ± 0.19 days under single parasitism to 48.4 ± 0.57 days under triple parasitism. The emergence rate of the parasitoid decreased as the parasitism level increased. In addition, the dry mass of adult parasitoid was significantly affected by the superparasitism. …

Total and daily egg production levels of P. citri were highest at 25 °C (25.6 and 2.1 eggs), followed by 20 °C (22.1 and 1.8 eggs) and 30 …
Arbitration, Bankruptcy And Public Policy: A Contractarian Analysis, Paul F. Kirgis
Arbitration, Bankruptcy And Public Policy: A Contractarian Analysis, Paul F. Kirgis
Faculty Law Review Articles
As arbitration agreements become more common, bankruptcy courts increasingly encounter arbitration agreements to which a bankruptcy debtor is a party. Bankruptcy judges must then determine whether to enforce an otherwise valid arbitration clause or to refuse enforcement and decide the underlying dispute themselves. To date, bankruptcy judges facing these issues have tended to see arbitrationa s a competing, quasi-judicialf orum. They typically refuse to enforce arbitration agreements when they find that bankruptcy policy would favor resolution in the bankruptcy proceeding instead of in some other adjudicative forum. Building on previous work, I contend in this article that arbitration is best …

The commons is a theoretical formalism that is useful in understanding many diverse problems of civil society. A common (or commons) is an economic, political, social, and legal institution that enables joint, shared, mutual or collective natural or social action by agents using a “pool” of shared or jointly held or mutually controlled resources. A substantial body of work exists detailing natural common resource pools acted upon by physical or biological agents. Another large body of work on humanly-directed natural resource pools study the human-natural environment interface, interspecies conflict and population density. Studies of social commons have also looked at …

This article provides the first comprehensive analysis of when compulsory licensing of patents is permissible as a matter of international law under the Agreement of Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property TRIPS).Thailand's recent compulsory licenses of patents on a variety of medications provide a convenient vehicle to analyze the limits of compulsory licensing under TRIPS. Thailand's actions are unique; most countries hesitate to issue compulsory licenses in the wake of legal uncertainties regarding TRIPS requirements as well as political pressure. This article capitalizes on the many issues involved in Thailand's licenses to provide an authoritative interpretation of the scope of compulsory …

The Orphan As Mirror: Postmodern Alienation And Societal Crisis In Japanese Film, Leann Wolley
The Orphan As Mirror: Postmodern Alienation And Societal Crisis In Japanese Film, Leann Wolley
Global Tides
This paper discusses the cultural significance of orphans in the post-modern media, using as a case study two Japanese films: Grave of the Fireflies and Nobody Knows. Through comparing the films and examining their approach to the orphan storytelling this paper attempts to gain insight into post-modern Japanese attitudes about social issues. By analyzing the appeal of the films to Japanese and international audiences, it also attempts to explain their popularity by drawing parallels between the main characters of each motion picture and the average postmodern citizen.

Insensitivity To Pain In Schizophrenia: An Examination Of Sensory And Affective Pain Processing In An Animal Model, Jessica Boyette Davis
Insensitivity To Pain In Schizophrenia: An Examination Of Sensory And Affective Pain Processing In An Animal Model, Jessica Boyette Davis
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
Patients with schizophrenia have been shown to display decreased sensitivity to pain, which can severely compound the impact of injuries and illnesses. Currently, the reasons for pain insensitivity in this population are unclear. Alterations in both the sensory and affective systems of pain processing have been observed, but the unique contribution of each of these systems has not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to systematically investigate these two components of pain in an animal model of schizophrenia. Animals first underwent L5 spinal nerve ligation surgery in order to provoke a condition of ongoing pain responding. Following recovery …
