The Effect Of Pag Stimulation Evoked Dorsal Root Reflexes In Neurogenic Inflammation, Pushpani Menaka Herath Jan 2009

The Effect Of Pag Stimulation Evoked Dorsal Root Reflexes In Neurogenic Inflammation, Pushpani Menaka Herath

Psychology Theses - Archive

Neurogenic inflammation is defined as inflammation produced by the sensory nerves. It contributes to the cardinal signs of inflammation: rubor (redness), tumor (swelling), color (heat), and dolor (pain or itch). It suggested that neurogenic inflammation is due to dorsal root reflex (DRR) and axonal reflex, which are antidromic electrical impulses of primary afferents. However, the central regulatory mechanisms of neurogenic inflammation are still unclear. It is known that electrical stimulation of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) can induce release of GABA in the spinal cord. GABA can act on GABAA receptors on the central terminals of the primary afferents to generate …

China's New Anti-Monopoly Law: A Perspective From The United States, Thomas R. Howell, Alan Wm. Wolff, Rachel Howe, Diane Oh

Washington International Law Journal

In August 2007, China enacted an Anti-Monopoly Law, becoming one of roughly ninety nations to establish a comprehensive regulatory regime governing competition. Since the advent of China’s economic reform program beginning three decades ago, China has been moving to integrate its economy within the global trading system. This article provides an overview of China’s Anti-Monopoly Law (“AML”) emphasizing key areas of significant apparent divergence from U.S. antitrust policy. The article addresses the evolution of anti-monopoly policy in China and the United States, observing that, where differences exist, China’s AML frequently reflects principles similar to those once embedded in U.S. antitrust …

Simulation Of Reduction Of Cr(Vi) By Fe(Ii) Produced Electrochemically In A Parallel-Plate Electrochemical Reactor, Sean Rayman, Ralph E. White Jan 2009

Simulation Of Reduction Of Cr(Vi) By Fe(Ii) Produced Electrochemically In A Parallel-Plate Electrochemical Reactor, Sean Rayman, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A model is presented for the reduction of hexavalent chromium in a parallel-plate electrochemical reactor via a homogenous reaction between Cr(VI) and Fe(II) generated at the iron anode. The effects of the space velocity of the feed solution, the concentration of supporting electrolyte, the distance between the electrodes, and the cell potential on conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), are discussed. This study indicates that for reduction of Cr(VI) using Fe(II), the space velocity must be maintained below 0.02s−1 or the system becomes limited by the rate of reduction of Cr(VI) by Fe(II). Increasing the current density by increasing the …

Systematics Of Ichneutine Parasitic Wasps (Braconidae: Ichneutinae), John Ray Fischer Jan 2009

Systematics Of Ichneutine Parasitic Wasps (Braconidae: Ichneutinae), John Ray Fischer

Theses and Dissertations--Entomology

Ichneutine wasps have received little attention, despite their hypothesized placement at the base of an economically and ecologically important clade, the Microgastroidia s.s. This study combines previous hypotheses based on morphology with molecular evidence from multiple genes (28S: D1-5, 18S, COI, and CAD) to examine phylogenetic relationships of Ichneutinae using maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference. The three main ichneutine groups (Ichneutini, Muesebeckiini, and Proteropini) are each found to be monophyletic, but evidence exists that Ichneutinae itself is paraphyletic with respect to the rest of Microgastroidea s.l. Lispixys is found to be derived from within Oligoneurus, and Masonbeckia is almost …

Does Alcoholics Anonymous Participation Decrease Learned Helplessness And Increase Self-Efficacy? , Philip John Pellegrino Jan 2009

Does Alcoholics Anonymous Participation Decrease Learned Helplessness And Increase Self-Efficacy? , Philip John Pellegrino

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has long been the major treatment of choice in the United States for individuals with alcohol related problems. Research on AA has had methodological problems and there is no clear evidence that AA in and of itself is effective in treating alcohol problems. Treatment studies on alcohol and substance users have found that abstinence self-efficacy and approach coping skills have been related to improved drinking outcomes. Also, depression and alcohol problems have been shown to be highly correlated with each other. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between participation in AA and improvements in abstinence self-efficacy, learned …

Automatic Graphics And Game Content Generation Through Evolutionary Computation, Erin Hastings Jan 2009

Automatic Graphics And Game Content Generation Through Evolutionary Computation, Erin Hastings

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation and game content includes the levels, models, textures, items, and other objects encountered and possessed by players during the game. In most modern video games and simulation software, the set of content shipped with the product is static and unchanging, or at best, randomized within a narrow set of parameters. However, ideally, if game content could be constantly and automatically renewed, players would remain engaged longer in the evolving stream of content. This dissertation introduces three novel technologies that together realize this ambition. (1) The first, NEAT Particles, is an evolutionary method to enable users to quickly and easily …

Variable Resolution & Dimensional Mapping For 3d Model Optimization, Joseph Venezia Jan 2009

Variable Resolution & Dimensional Mapping For 3d Model Optimization, Joseph Venezia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three-dimensional computer models, especially geospatial architectural data sets, can be visualized in the same way humans experience the world, providing a realistic, interactive experience. Scene familiarization, architectural analysis, scientific visualization, and many other applications would benefit from finely detailed, high resolution, 3D models. Automated methods to construct these 3D models traditionally has produced data sets that are often low fidelity or inaccurate; otherwise, they are initially highly detailed, but are very labor and time intensive to construct. Such data sets are often not practical for common real-time usage and are not easily updated. This thesis proposes Variable Resolution & Dimensional …

Modeling Scenes And Human Activities In Videos, Arslan Basharat Jan 2009

Modeling Scenes And Human Activities In Videos, Arslan Basharat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we address the problem of understanding human activities in videos by developing a two-pronged approach: coarse level modeling of scene activities and fine level modeling of individual activities. At the coarse level, where the resolution of the video is low, we rely on person tracks. At the fine level, richer features are available to identify different parts of the human body, therefore we rely on the body joint tracks. There are three main goals of this dissertation: (1) identify unusual activities at the coarse level, (2) recognize different activities at the fine level, and (3) predict the …

Geometric Invariance In The Analysis Of Human Motion In Video Data, Yuping Shen Jan 2009

Geometric Invariance In The Analysis Of Human Motion In Video Data, Yuping Shen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human motion analysis is one of the major problems in computer vision research. It deals with the study of the motion of human body in video data from different aspects, ranging from the tracking of body parts and reconstruction of 3D human body configuration, to higher level of interpretation of human action and activities in image sequences. When human motion is observed through video camera, it is perspectively distorted and may appear totally different from different viewpoints. Therefore it is highly challenging to establish correct relationships between human motions across video sequences with different camera settings. In this work, we …

Self-Realizing Inventions And The Utilitarian Foundation Of Patent Law, Alan J. Devlin, Neel U. Sukhatme Jan 2009

Self-Realizing Inventions And The Utilitarian Foundation Of Patent Law, Alan J. Devlin, Neel U. Sukhatme

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Unlike other forms of intellectual property, patents are universally justified on utilitarian grounds alone. Valuable inventions and discoveries, bearing the characteristics of public goods, are easily appropriated by third parties. Because much technological innovation occurs pursuant to significant expenditures—both in terms of upfront research and subsequent commercialization costs—inventors must be permitted to extract at least part of the social gain associated with their technological contributions. Absent some form of proprietary control or alternative reward system, economics predicts that suboptimal capital will be devoted to the innovative process.

This widely accepted principle comes with an important corollary: namely, that canons of …

From Constitution To Constitutionalism: A Global Framework For Legitimate Public Power Systems, Larry Catá Backer Jan 2009

From Constitution To Constitutionalism: A Global Framework For Legitimate Public Power Systems, Larry Catá Backer

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

Academic and policy engagements with constitutions and constitutionalism have largely been built around unstated frameworks within which legitimated activity can take place. The essay suggests both the disorientation of much of the discussion and proposes an ideological framework that captures the assumptions about which constitutionalist discourse has evolved. Constitutionalism at one time could be said to involve the study of the peculiarities of the unique domestic constitutionalf ramework through which government was constituted and power institutionalized. No longer. This essay examines the current discourse of constitutionalism. That discourse reveals the current dynamic character of the concept. The old consensus of …

Geology And Wine In Missouri: Spatial Analysis Of Terroir Using A Geographic Information System And Remote Sensing, Kathryn Nora Barnard Jan 2009

Geology And Wine In Missouri: Spatial Analysis Of Terroir Using A Geographic Information System And Remote Sensing, Kathryn Nora Barnard

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The concept of terroir, based on the French word meaning 'sense of place,' suggests that flavor and quality of wine is associated with certain physical characteristics of the earth as well as viticulture and viniculture practices. The physical characteristics of terroir include soil, geology, topography, and climate. Designated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) are discrete appellations in the United States that have well-established and historic viticultural practices, but the relationship between terroir and AVA appellations is complex. Wineries are a growing industry in the United States and the use of a GIS and remote sensing has proved useful in many other …

Running The Ancient Ark By Steam: Catholic Publishing, 1880-1950, Una M. Cadegan Jan 2009

Running The Ancient Ark By Steam: Catholic Publishing, 1880-1950, Una M. Cadegan

History Faculty Publications

This essay highlights two aspects of Catholic culture related to books and reading between 1880 and 1940: the connection between.material objects and the printed word, and the role of authority in shaping both the institutional aspects and the content of Catholic publishing. It also emphasizes how, in their tumultuous but thriving print culture, U.S. Catholics adopted technically and organizationally advanced processes in the pursuit of religious and cultural goals that were, in the eyes of their contemporaries, perceived as largely modern.
