Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Documented cases of convergent molecular evolution due to selection are fairly unusual, and examples to date have involved only a few amino acid positions. However, because convergence mimics shared ancestry and is not accommodated by current phylogenetic methods, it can strongly mislead phylogenetic inference when it does occur. Here, we present a case of extensive convergent molecular evolution between snake and agamid lizard mitochondrial genomes that overcomes an otherwise strong phylogenetic signal. Evidence from morphology, nuclear genes, and most sites in the mitochondrial genome support one phylogenetic tree, but a subset of mostly amino acid-altering substitutions ( primarily at the …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a key organelle regulating intracellular Ca(2+) homeostasis. Oxidants and mitochondria-derived free radicals can target ER-based Ca(2+) regulatory proteins and cause uncontrolled Ca(2+) release that may contribute to protracted ER stress and apoptosis. Several ER stress proteins have been suggested to counteract the deregulation of ER Ca(2+) homeostasis and ER stress. Here we showed that knockdown of Herp, an ubiquitin-like domain containing ER stress protein, renders PC12 and MN9D cells vulnerable to 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium-induced cytotoxic cell death by a mechanism involving up-regulation of CHOP expression and ER Ca(2+) depletion. Conversely, Herp overexpression confers protection by blocking 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium-induced …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Background: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) becomes dormant and phenotypically drug resistant when it encounters multiple stresses within the host. Inability of currently available drugs to kill latent Mtb is a major impediment to curing and possibly eradicating tuberculosis (TB). Most in vitro dormancy models, using single stress factors, fail to generate a truly dormant Mtb population. An in vitro model that generates truly dormant Mtb cells is needed to elucidate the metabolic requirements that allow Mtb to successfully go through dormancy, identify new drug targets, and to screen drug candidates to discover novel drugs that can kill dormant pathogen. Methodology/Principal Findings: …

Decorin Is A Novel Antagonistic Ligand Of The Met Receptor, Silvia Goldoni, Ashley Humphries, Alexander Nyström, Sampurna Sattar, Rick T. Owens, David J. Mcquillan, Keith Ireton, Renato V. Iozzo

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Decorin, a member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan gene family, impedes tumor cell growth by down-regulating the epidermal growth factor receptor. Decorin has a complex binding repertoire, thus, we predicted that decorin would modulate the bioactivity of other tyrosine kinase receptors. We discovered that decorin binds directly and with high affinity (K(d) = similar to 1.5 nM) to Met, the receptor for hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). Binding of decorin to Met is efficiently displaced by HGF and less efficiently by internalin B, a bacterial Met ligand. Interaction of decorin with Met induces transient receptor activation, recruitment of the E3 ubiquitin …

Native Fire Regime As A Reference For Establishing Management Practices, Brean Duncan Jan 2009

Native Fire Regime As A Reference For Establishing Management Practices, Brean Duncan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our understanding of natural fire regimes in human-dominated landscapes is limited. Fire regimes operating in the pyrogenic ecosystems of Florida have been altered by fire suppression and fuel fragmentation. This is especially true of North Merritt Island, Florida, where human impacts have led to an incomplete knowledge of current fire regimes. We know that growing season fires frequently occurred within general return intervals and that many native terrestrial species require fire to remain viable. A 20-year plus period of fire suppression caused structural and compositional changes to vegetation/fuels that led to catastrophic fires and the decline of native species populations …

Beliefs Of Graduate Students About Unstructured Computer Use In Face-To-Face Classes With Internet Access And Its Influence On Student Recall, Gregory Johnson Jan 2009

Beliefs Of Graduate Students About Unstructured Computer Use In Face-To-Face Classes With Internet Access And Its Influence On Student Recall, Gregory Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of computers equipped with Internet access by students during face-to-face (F2F) class sessions is perceived as academically beneficial by a growing number of students and faculty members in universities across the United States. Nevertheless, some researchers suggest unstructured computer use detached from the immediate class content may negatively influence student participation, increase distraction levels, minimize recall of recently presented information, and decrease student engagement. This study investigates graduate students' beliefs about computer use with Internet access during graduate face-to-face lecture classes in which computer use is neither mandated nor integrated in the class and the effect of such …

Rock Child, Deborah Garwood

Theses

Physician Lawrence "Doc" Bass lives in Ellington, Missouri. Forced to close his practice due to crippling arthritis, Doc has resigned himself to early retirement-until the day he meets Aubrey, a boy with an unusual birthmark on his back. Aubrey fits perfectly into the already quirky family of Hickcocks. He may be just a child, but strange things-good things-begin to happen whenever Aubrey is around. But not all of the Ellington folks feel the same way about him; some have an agenda for the boy. Doc, his good friend Sheriff Baines, and a host of other folks come in contact with …

Water As A Public Good: The Status Of Water Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade, Bryant W. Smith Jan 2009

Water As A Public Good: The Status Of Water Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade, Bryant W. Smith

Faculty Publications

Is water a "product" subject to the World Trade Organization (WTO)’s General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)? I argue that it is not, because the established, widespread, and consistent assertion by states of public ownership over their water resources through both municipal and international law (the "public-ownership consensus") precludes any reading of GATT that would fundamentally alter the unique status of those resources. My reasoning therefore differs from that of others who have addressed this issue in that I first examine the broader legal context in which the WTO exists and then consider how that context compels an interpretation …

Tissue Targeted Embryonic Chimeras: Zebrafish Gastrula Cell Transplantation, Elizabeth R. Deschene, Michael J. Barresi Jan 2009

Tissue Targeted Embryonic Chimeras: Zebrafish Gastrula Cell Transplantation, Elizabeth R. Deschene, Michael J. Barresi

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Certain fundamental questions in the field of developmental biology can only be answered when cells are placed in novel environments or when small groups of cells in a larger context are altered. Watching how one cell interacts with and behaves in a unique environment is essential to characterizing cell functions. Determining how the localized misexpression of a specific protein influences surrounding cells provides insightful information on the roles that protein plays in a variety of developmental processes. Our lab uses the zebrafish model system to uniquely combine genetic approaches with classical transplantation techniques to generate genotypic or phenotypic chimeras. We …

Tracking Bacterial Pollution In The Cains Brook/Mill Creek Watershed: Implications For Policy And Management, Aaron Kornbluth Jan 2009

Tracking Bacterial Pollution In The Cains Brook/Mill Creek Watershed: Implications For Policy And Management, Aaron Kornbluth

Master's Theses and Capstones

Pathogenic fecal bacteria present a management challenge when they contaminate surface waters used by humans. This study examined the extent to which the ongoing Cains Brook/Mill Creek watershed restoration in Seabrook, NH has successfully characterized the problem of bacterial pollution and implemented mitigation practices. Guided by the policy sciences analytical framework, this study employed a policy implementation audit reviewing relevant bacteria source tracking data, interviews and online surveys as a means to triangulate multiple data sources. Results indicate that bacteria arise from multiple sources and impairments still exist, although bacteria levels were not generally high. Management activities have likely reduced …

Morphological Variation In Codium Fragile In The Northwest Atlantic, Lucy Elizabeth Pleticha Jan 2009

Morphological Variation In Codium Fragile In The Northwest Atlantic, Lucy Elizabeth Pleticha

Master's Theses and Capstones

Codium fragile (Suringar) Hariot, an invasive Asiatic green alga, has colonized areas of the NW Atlantic within the past fifty years. The plant has a dichotomously branched cylindrical thallus made of tangled filaments surrounded by a dense covering of swollen filament tips, or utricles, terminating in pointed mucrons. This study's goal was to investigate morphological differences in NW Atlantic C. fragile populations to determine which subspecies are present. In the summer of 2008, I surveyed 24 sites from the Canadian Maritimes to Long Island Sound and evaluated size variation in utricles. Morphological investigations revealed a two-fold difference in utricle and …
