Can We Prevent Genocide By Preventing Incitement?, Elihu D. Richter, Yael Stein, Alex Barnea, Marc Sherman Nov 2009

Can We Prevent Genocide By Preventing Incitement?, Elihu D. Richter, Yael Stein, Alex Barnea, Marc Sherman

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

Genocide and its prevention both result from human choice and bystander indifference. Since the Armenian genocide, and the Holocaust, perpetrators have used dehumanizing metaphors to prepare their followers to overcome normative inhibitions that stand in the way of their becoming killers, rapists, and plunderers of members of potential victim populations. Today, one lesson from the Holocaust is that there are existential dangers associated with ignoring state sanctioned dehumanizing hate language. Not all hate language and incitement leads to genocide, and genocide can occur without hate language and incitement. There can be hate language with and without explicit incitement, propagated by …

Self-Efficacy And Instruction In Mathematics, Juana Patricia Ordóñez-Feliciano Nov 2009

Self-Efficacy And Instruction In Mathematics, Juana Patricia Ordóñez-Feliciano

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

According to the National Mathematics Advisory Panel (2008) differences in students' mathematical achievement were attributed to differences in teacher characteristics, including the use of instructional methods and their self-efficacy beliefs. Concurrently, today's mathematics teachers face challenges arising from Federal and State mandates requiring students' proficiency to improve on standardized tests. This study considered the relationship between two characteristics, mathematics teachers' self-efficacy and their choice of instructional strategies. Further, the relationship between teachers' self-efficacy and their demographic characteristics as measured by a researcher-developed questionnaire was explored.

The researcher utilized the Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale (TSES) and the Teachers' Instructional Practices Survey (TIPS), …

Tracing Anthropogenic Wastes: Detection Of Fluorescent Optical Brighteners In A Gradient Of Natural Organic Matter Fluorescence, Laura Kellie Dixon Nov 2009

Tracing Anthropogenic Wastes: Detection Of Fluorescent Optical Brighteners In A Gradient Of Natural Organic Matter Fluorescence, Laura Kellie Dixon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A dual wavelength method was developed for the field detection of optical brighteners

(OBs), fluorescent laundry additives used as indicators of anthropogenic wastes. The

method was quantitative for OBs under variable levels of fluorescent colored dissolved

organic matter (CDOM). Based on excitation at 300-400 nm and 440 and 550 nm

emission, the method assumed a constant ratio of fluorescence due to CDOM alone, even

if absolute amplitude varied. Concentrations of OBs were computed as the difference

between the observed 440 nm emission and the expected CDOM fluorescence at 440 nm,

as extrapolated from the 550 nm fluorescence and established CDOM …

Facing Faces, John Luck Nov 2009

Facing Faces, John Luck

Theses and Dissertations

I am a surrealist at heart. I enjoy the creative process of making a visual story that uses unusual imagery. Every work is a reflection of some part of my aesthetic belief: an outgrowth of my individuality. The art I produce is a direct reflection of my personality, beliefs, values, and experiences. I wear my emotions on my sleeve and I have a strong sense of identity. My work exhibits intense colors and strong contrasts. Each has its own underlying subtleties that express the inner depth of the concept. A little attention-deficient and a little bipolar, I am an erratic …

Communication, Consumption And Manipulation: The Body As Language In The Films Of Jan Švankmajer, Amanda Marie Dowd Nov 2009

Communication, Consumption And Manipulation: The Body As Language In The Films Of Jan Švankmajer, Amanda Marie Dowd

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I will analyze and discuss the work of renowned director Jan Švankmajer. Specifically, I will examine how director Jan Švankmajer’s representation of the body creates a metaphorical language. In addition, I will address what meaning can be gathered from, or made apparent through the commentary of the body’s language and discuss the significance of the socio-political implications. Prior to my discussion of Švankmajer’s work I will give a concise socio-political history of the Czech Republic from 1968-1994; this discussion will provide a framework for the subsequent analyses. In order to provide support for my argument, I will …

The Development Of A Human Polyomavirus Quantitative Pcr Assay To Assess Viral Persistence, Water Quality, And Human Health Risks, Shannon M. Mcquaig Nov 2009

The Development Of A Human Polyomavirus Quantitative Pcr Assay To Assess Viral Persistence, Water Quality, And Human Health Risks, Shannon M. Mcquaig

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Microbial water quality is generally assessed using fecal indictor organisms; however host-specific microbial source tracking (MST) methodologies can be employed to differentiate sources of fecal pollution. The central goal of this research was to develop and validate a QPCR assay for the quantification of two human-specific polyomaviruses (HPyVs) in environmental water samples. These viruses are prevalent worldwide and produce lifelong, asymptomatic viruria in immunocompetent individuals.

A Taqman® quantitative PCR (QPCR) assay based on the conserved T-antigen of two HPyVs (JCV and BKV) was developed and optimized (Chapter 2). HPyVs were detected in a high proportion of human-associated waste samples (e.g. …

Metadata For Plant Seeds: Taxonomy, Standards, Issues, And Impact, Erin Wilson Nov 2009

Metadata For Plant Seeds: Taxonomy, Standards, Issues, And Impact, Erin Wilson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A growing awareness of the importance of biodiversity has brought international attention to seed collecting, saving, and information sharing. Scientists are continually learning more about seeds at the most basic biological level, and this new knowledge is raising questions about the taxonomic systems scientists have used since the 1700s. Contemporary seed metadata is a complex and diverse area for study. This begins by looking at the taxonomic systems employed by botanists and discussing current trends and issues in that area of seed metadata. The most prominent seed metadata standards are examined. Third, the emerging field of bioinformatics is addressed, and the …

Untold Truths: The Exclusion Of Enforced Sterilizations From The Peruvian Truth Commission's Final Report, Jocelyn E. Getgen Nov 2009

Untold Truths: The Exclusion Of Enforced Sterilizations From The Peruvian Truth Commission's Final Report, Jocelyn E. Getgen

Cornell Law School Berger International Speaker Papers

This presentation argues that the exclusion of enforced sterilization cases from the Peruvian Truth Commission's investigation and Final Report effectively erases State responsibility and decreases the likelihood for justice and reparations for women victims-survivors of State-sponsored violence in Peru. In a context of deep cultural and economic divides and violent conflict, this presentation recounts how the State's Family Planning Program violated Peruvian women's reproductive rights by sterilizing low-income, indigenous Quechua-speaking women without informed consent. This presentation argues that these systematic reproductive injustices constitute an act of genocide, proposes an independent inquiry, and advocates for a more inclusive investigation and final …
