The role of tRNA in translating the genetic code has received considerable attention over the last 50 years, and we now know in great detail how particular amino acids are specifically selected and brought to the ribosome in response to the corresponding mRNA codon. Over the same period, it has also become increasingly clear that the ribosome is not the only destination to which tRNAs deliver amino acids, with processes ranging from lipid modification to antibiotic biosynthesis all using aminoacyl‐tRNAs as substrates. Here we review examples of alternative functions for tRNA beyond translation, which together suggest that the role of …

Regional Assessment Of Aspen Change And Spatial Variability On Decadal Time Scales, Temuulen Tsagaan Sankey Nov 2009

Regional Assessment Of Aspen Change And Spatial Variability On Decadal Time Scales, Temuulen Tsagaan Sankey

Aspen Bibliography

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is commonly believed to be declining throughout western North America. Using a historical vegetation map and Landsat TM5 imagery, this study detects changes in regional aspen cover over two different time periods of 85 and 18 years and examines aspen change patterns with biophysical variables in the Targhee National Forest of eastern Idaho, USA. A subpixel classification approach was successfully used to classify aspen. The results indicate greater spatial variability in regional aspen change patterns than indicated by local-scale studies. The observed spatial variability appears to be an inherent pattern in regional aspen dynamics, …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Human onchocerciasis, caused by the filarial nematode Onchocerca volvulus, is controlled almost exclusively by the drug ivermectin, which prevents pathology by targeting the microfilariae. However, this reliance on a single control tool has led to interest in vaccination as a potentially complementary strategy. Here, we describe the results of a trial in West Africa to evaluate a multivalent, subunit vaccine for onchocerciasis in the naturally evolved host-parasite relationship of Onchocerca ochengi in cattle. Na ̈ıve calves, reared in fly-proof accommodation, were immunised with eight recombinant antigens of O. ochengi, administered separately with either Freund’s adjuvant or alum. The selected antigens …

Lantern's Diary, Wei Zhong Tan Nov 2009

Lantern's Diary, Wei Zhong Tan

Theses and Dissertations

My MFA project titled, “Lantern's Diary” is a synergy of colors, tactile experiences, and reflections on change. The artwork is based on cultural influences. The physical form of the lantern is a metaphor of culture identity—in Eastern culture, paper has been used in architecture, furniture, clothing, funerals, writing materials, and lanterns. Its function as a material is to fulfill the necessity of daily life and ceremonial rituals. Hence, paper plays an important role in the Eastern society. The color spectrum representing “Change” corresponds with the western system of color organization. The gallery space plays a spatial aesthetic role in …

Warrant And The Value Of Knowledge, Jonathan Scott Fuqua Nov 2009

Warrant And The Value Of Knowledge, Jonathan Scott Fuqua

Theses

There is a widespread intuition that knowledge is more valuable than any of its subparts. In the literature the need to show that this is the case is known as the secondary value problem. In this paper I propose to defend this intuition by solving the secondary value problem. In the first part of the paper I introduce and explain the problem I propose to solve. In the second part of the paper I discuss two objections to the very possibility of solving the secondary value problem. In parts three and four I attempt to solve the secondary value problem …

Disenchantment: The Formation, Distortion, And Transformation Of Identity In Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, Lydia K. Christoph Nov 2009

Disenchantment: The Formation, Distortion, And Transformation Of Identity In Charles Dickens' Great Expectations, Lydia K. Christoph

Masters Theses

Charles Dickens' Great Expectations (1861) stands apart from his other works as a powerful expression of his later social and theological views. Rife with rich characterizations, fairy-tale elements, grotesque and bizarre plot twists, Victorian social issues, and a beautifully thoughtful and imaginative commentary on the universal human themes of loss, guilt, abuse, identity, money, social status, and love, this novel remains an outstanding example of truly great art, both popular and classic. This story of identity formation in a nineteenth-century English context demonstrates how Dickens' life and writings, influenced by spurious and inconsistent theological beliefs, express the idea that sin …

Historical View And Physiology Demonstration At The Nmj Of The Crayfish Opener Muscle, Ann S. Cooper, Robin L. Cooper Nov 2009

Historical View And Physiology Demonstration At The Nmj Of The Crayfish Opener Muscle, Ann S. Cooper, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

Here we present some of the key important discoveries made with the opener neuromuscular (NMJ) preparation of crustaceans and illustrate that there is still much to learn from this model preparation. In understanding the history one can appreciate why even today this NMJ still offers a rich playground to address questions regarding pre- and post-synaptic function and plasticity. The viability and ease of access to the terminal for intracellular as well as extracellular electrophysiology and imaging are significant advantages. The mechanisms behind the modulation of vesicular kinetics and fusion within the high- and low-output terminals are begging for investigation. The …

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation Preconditions The Heart Against Ischemic Injury, Tracy Wrigt Nov 2009

Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation Preconditions The Heart Against Ischemic Injury, Tracy Wrigt

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Abstract AMP-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASE ACTIVATION PRECONDITIONS THE HEART AGAINST ISCHEMIC INJURY. Tracy M. Wright, Agnes S. Kim, Lawrence H. Young. Section of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a well-established regulator of cellular energy status and metabolic function, and is a vital molecule during the acute response to ischemic stress in the heart. However, its role in preconditioning against ischemic injury is still not clearly defined. Using a novel and specific AMPK activator, A-769662, we wanted to determine if pharmacologic, pre-ischemic activation of AMPK is sufficient to …

3d-Surfer: Software For High-Throughput Protein Surface Comparison And Analysis, David La, Juan Esquivel-Rodríguez, Vishwesh Venkatraman, Bin Li, Lee Sael, Stephen Ueng, Steven Ahrendt, Daisuke Kihara

Faculty Publications

Summary: We present 3D-SURFER, a web-based tool designed to facilitate high-throughput comparison and characterization of proteins based on their surface shape. As each protein is effectively represented by a vector of 3D Zernike descriptors, comparison times for a query protein against the entire PDB take, on an average, only a couple of seconds. The web interface has been designed to be as interactive as possible with displays showing animated protein rotations, CATH codes and structural alignments using the CE program. In addition, geometrically interesting local features of the protein surface, such as pockets that often correspond to ligand binding sites …

Shi’Ite Iran’S Genocidal Jew Hatred, Andrew G. Bostom Nov 2009

Shi’Ite Iran’S Genocidal Jew Hatred, Andrew G. Bostom

The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power

During July 2008, Professors Moshe Sharon and Benny Morris both opined solemnly about an inevitable Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear facilities. These two respected Israeli academicians, despite holding very disparate political views, also concurred on the moral justification for such pre-emptive action - the genocidal threat to Israel posed by a Shi'ite Iranian regime gripped with an apocalyptic, Jew-hating fervor.
