Inhibitory Effects Of Ajowan (Trachyspermum Ammi) Ethanolic Extract On A. Ochraceus Growth And Ochratoxin Production, Pushpa S. Murthy, B. B. Borse, Hafeeza Khanum, P. Srinivas

Turkish Journal of Biology

Ajowan is an aromatic seed spice that has a medicinal value. In this paper Ajowan Ethanolic Extract (AEE), which was prepared from Ajowan seeds, was assessed for antibacterial and antifungal activity against selected pathogenic bacteria and fungi by agar well diffusion assay. AEE exhibited considerable inhibitory effects against all the organisms tested. Emphasis of the study was on the affect of AEE on the mycelial growth and spore germination of toxigenic fungi A. ochraceus. Cultures were incubated on yeast extract-sucrose (YES) broth, at concentrations of 50, 150, 250 ppm at 25°C. At 250 ppm, AEE completely inhibited germination of spores, …

A Case Report Of Ulcerative Lymphangitis (A Mini Review Of Causes And Current Therapies), Fereydon Rezazadeh Zavoshti, Amir Babak Sioofy-Khojine, Hassan Ali Mahpeikar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Ulcerative lymphangitis, or pigeon fever, is a bacterial infection of the lymphatic vessels of the skin in horses, cattle, sheep, and goats. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is the classical cause of the disease. However, other pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus have been isolated from cases of ulcerative lymphangitis. The aim of this report is to review the causes of pyoderma and skin abscesses in horses with specific attention to Staphylococcus aureus. A 10-year-old Thoroughbred stallion was examined in the suburbs of Tabriz (northwest of Iran) in February 2007. Skin abscesses were present around the hock joints on the hind limbs, on the …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The efficacy of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PhOH) as an anaesthetic for the musky octopus, Eledone moschata (Lamarck, 1799), was examined. Different doses (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8 mL L^{-1}) of 2-PhOH were prepared in 20 L transparent plastic containers containing 10 L of continually aerated seawater (pH 8.2, O2 8 mg L^{-1}, salinity 37.2 per thousand at 15.3 °C). Six individuals were used in each experiment. After quantifying the anaesthetic time for each animal, which was defined as the loss of sucking intensity (Stage A3), the specimens were transferred to a plastic recovery tank (430 L of aerated seawater), defined as …

Ecological Succession Of Freshwater Ostracoda (Crustacea) In A Newly Developed Rheocrene Spring (Bolu, Turkey), Okan Külköylüoğlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Six species of ostracod (Candona neglecta, Heterocypris incongruens, Ilyocypris bradyi, Darwinula stevensoni, Pseudocandona compressa, and Psychrodromus olivaceus) were collected from a newly developed spring between October 2001 and October 2004. The first 5 species have cosmopolitan distribution in the Holarctic region. The ratio of non-cosmopolitan to cosmopolitan species (called 'pseudorichness') was 0.2, suggesting dominance of cosmopolitan species. Among the species, C. neglecta displayed the highest tolerance to 6 different environmental variables, although its estimated optimum values varied. Except foor redox potential and salinity, optimum values for H. incongruens were the highest. High tolerance and optimum values seemed to provide more …

The descriptions were based on live observations and silver impregnated specimens and morphometry. The main morphological characteristics of these species are similar to those described in the literature. However, the dorsal brush row 3 is longer than dorsal brush rows 1 and 2 in A. geleii, and E. nodosus has a long monokinetidal tail not reported previously. This is …

Occurrence Of The Pathogens And Parasites Of Phyllotreta Undulata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) In Turkey, Mustafa Yaman, Onur Tosun, Çi̇çek Aydin

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The pathogens and parasites of Pyllotreta undulata Kutschera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) collected from 5 localities in the Black Sea region of Turkey were investigated. Four different types of pathogens and parasites were recorded in adults of P. undulata: gregarine, microsporidium, and 2 nematodes, namely 1 Howardula species and 1 Hexamermis species. Gregarine and Howardula were the most common pathogen and parasite in P. undulata populations. There is the first record of a Hexamermis (Nematoda: Mermithidae) parasite from P. undulata in Turkey.

The Distribution And Conservation Status Of Amphibians In Dobrudja (Romania), Paul Szekely, Rodica Plaiasu, Marian Tudor, Dan Cogalniceanu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The distribution of amphibian species in Dobrudja has been studied for more than a century; however, the available information was scattered among tens of publications and museum collections. In the present paper we synthesized the available distribution records from published papers, museum collections, and our own field data. These distribution data were treated separately as historical data (before 1990), continuous data (records from both before and after 1990), and recent ones (after 1990). Based on distribution records we performed a cartographic analysis consisting of 3 indexes that attempt to indicate shifts in geographic range over time. Using these indexes as …

Numerous studies with experimental animals have shown that neem seed extracts have transient and reversible effects on sterility. NeemAzal-T/S^® (1%) was fed to 3 experimental animal groups via stomach intubation (5, 15, and 25 mg/kg) for 6 days and the control group was given only tap water. Hematological parameters were determined on the 4^th and 9^th days of the experiment. Hemoglobin and MCH levels showed an increase in group 3 on the 4^th day, as compared with the control group, and there were no significant differences in the other parameters between these groups, whereas on the 9th day hemoglobin, MCH …

Effects Of Carbaryl And Γ-Bhc On The Histology Of Midgut And Digestive Enzyme Profiles In The Third Instar Larvae Of Fruit-Sucking Moth, Othreis Materna (Linn.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Chitralekha Deshmukh, Aneel Mohite, Jagdish Shinde Jan 2009

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The effects of LC50 dose of carbaryl and gamma benzene hexachloride (γ-BHC) on midgut histopathology and midgut enzyme activities in the third instar larvae of fruit-sucking moth, Othreis materna (L.) were studied. The sub-lethal doses of carbaryl and \gamma-BHC caused initially hypersecretory activity in the midgut epithelial cells leading to deposition of numerous secretory vesicles in the extraperitrophic space, clumping of chromatin matter, and regression and vacuolization of the columnar cells, but later on they were recovered within 24 h. Activities of the midgut digestive enzymes (amylase, invertase, lipase, and protease) were significantly affected. Carbaryl enhanced (P < 0.05) the amylase, invertase, lipase, and protease activities initially up to 4 h and 6 h of treatment, but after 24 h of treatment, amylase and invertase activities resumed while an inhibitory effect was observed on lipase and protease activities. \gamma-BHC did not affect the amylase and protease activities up to 4 h but later on it significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced their activities up to 6 h and 12 h, respectively. Thereafter it fell without showing any sign of recovery. \gamma-BHC enhanced (P < 0.05) invertase and lipase activities but they fell after 4 h treatment.
