Turkish Journal of Zoology

The perennial monocarpic endemic species Heracleum platytaenium Boiss. [Apiaceae (=Umbelliferae)] was collected with associated insects in Kızılcahamam (Ankara) between June and August in 2006-2007. Nine insects, namely Hemipterous Graphosoma lineatum (L.), G. semipunctatum (Fabricius) and Anoraphis subterranea (Walker), Coleopterous Lixus nordmanni Hochhuht, Lepidopterous Aethes kasyi Razowski, Epinotia thapsiana (Zeller) and Epermenia chaerophyllella (Goeze), Dipterous Melanagromyza heracleana Zlobin, and Lasiambia albidipennis (Strobl.) (Diptera) were determined on H. platytaenium. Among them, M. heracleana (Agromyzidae) is recorded from Turkey for the first time, and Lasiambia albidipennis (Chloropidae) is new as genus and species for the Turkish fauna. Additionally, H. platytaenium is recognized as …

Review Of The Ichthyofaunal Changes In Lake Eğirdir Between 1915 And 2007, Fahretti̇n Küçük, Hasan M. Sari, Orhan Demi̇r, İskender Gülle

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The ichthyofaunal changes in Lake Eğirdir between 1915 and 2007 were reviewed. It was understood that the most drastic change in the ichthyofauna of Lake Eğirdir occurred in 1955 with the introduction of pike-perch (Sander lucioperca), and that the process of change continued with the addition of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) in 1996 and big scale sand smelt (Atherina boyeri) in 2003. Today, there are 15 fish taxa (10 native, 5 non-native) in Lake Eğirdir. It was determined that, among the endemic species of Lake Eğirdir, Handlirsch^{'}s minnow (Pseudophoxinus handlirschi) is extinct (EX), Ereğli minnow (Hemigrammocapoeta kemali) disappeared, and Eğirdir …

A New Species Of Terellia Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera: Tephritidae) From Turkey, Murat Kütük

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Terellia yukseli n. sp. was collected in Turkey from Centaurea urvillei DC. and is described, illustrated, and placed in the subgenus Cerajocera. Type locality is Niğde Sazlıca, and specimens were collected from Centaurea urvillei DC. This species is most similar to T. setifera Hendel and T. clarissima Korneyev in having entirely hyaline wing. It can be distinguished from other species of Terellia by the lack of wing spot pattern, the presence of a spinose antennal horn, and characteristic glans and aculeus. Photographs of the specimens and detailed illustrations of the genitalia structures are provided.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This paper aims to elucidate the structure and design of radulae of 2 species of limpet, namely Patella caerulea and P. rustica. Samples were examined by light microscope and SEM. Although the general formula is the same, the pattern of each dentition differed between the 2 species. General morphology and histology of odontophore showed structural significance of the organ, suggesting a further study to confirm ecological choice of the genus at different intertidal levels.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The eggs of Megistopus flavicornis (Rossi, 1790) and Macronemurus bilineatus Brauer, 1868 were studied by light and scanning electron microscope and are described in detail in this paper. Both species have roughly elongate and cylindrical eggs with rounded ends and have 2 flattened disc-like micropylar processes at the opposite poles. The chorionic surface is tuberculated and differs between the 2 species. The eggs of M. flavicornis additionally have some rows containing polygonal pattern of exochorion near the micropyles. Moreover, a number of morphological differences between the 2 species are noted.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The karyotypic and cytogenetic characteristics of southern catfish, Glyptothorax silviae Coad, 1981, was investigated for the first time by examining metaphase chromosome spreads obtained from gill epithelial and kidney cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 52. The karyotype consisted of 9 pairs of metacentric, 14 pairs of submetacentric, and 3 pairs of subtelocentric chromosomes. The arm number was 98. No heteromorphic sex chromosomes were cytologically detected in this catfish. Comparison of the chromosome number of this fish with that of the other members of subfamily Glyptosterninae shows that 2n = 52 may be regarded as …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The relationship between the lordosis severity and swimming performance in sea bass juveniles was investigated. In total, 149 experimental animals 110-130 days old that ranged from 1.44 to 3.44 g (mean_{TW} ± SD: 2.41 ± 0.49 g) and 5.4 to 6.5 cm (mean_{TL} ± SD: 6.03 ± 0.39 cm) were used in experiments to determine critical swimming speed (U_{crit}) in water that was 14 ± 1 °C. Vertebral angle in normal healthy fish is 180°. The lordosis severity in abnormal fish is indicated by a reduction in this value. Vertebral angles (\varphiº) of the experimental animals in this study ranged …

Five blood samples were obtained by saphena venepuncture from all dogs, during the time course of the experimentally induced infection with Staphylococcus intermedius, administered subcutaneously at a dose rate of 5 ml of 1.10^9 CFU/ml within 14 days. TP concentration was measured by 2 macro protein techniques - biuret method (commonly used) and method of Lowry, and a modified version of biuret method (micro …

Fatty Acid Content And Composition Of Turkish Beef And Lamb At Retail, Leyla Vatansever, Gülcan Demi̇rel

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The fatty acid content and chemical composition of retail samples of beef and lamb meat were investigated. Fifty beef and lamb chops were purchased from different supermarkets in İstanbul on separate occasions. The average muscle fatty acid content was 2395 and 2257 mg/100 g of muscle for beef and lamb, respectively. Saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid contents were 1000 and 940 mg/100 g, and 199 and 261 mg/100 g of muscle for beef and lamb, respectively. Overall results indicate that, particularly before the Sacrifice Holiday, concentrate-based feeding of livestock increases and this has an adverse effect on the n-6/n-3 ratio …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

An outbreak of industrial chronic copper poisoning in Iranian fat-tailed sheep in a region of southeast Iran is described. At least 10,000 out of 75,000 sheep (13.3%) originating from 50 flocks died over a period of 3 years in the Khatoon Abad region in Kerman province, Iran. The diagnosis was based on epidemiological, clinical, hematological, serum biochemical, urinalysis, necropsy and histopathological evaluations. Then findings were confirmed by toxicological analysis of liver and kidney samples. The details of epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and pathologic findings are described in the manuscript. These findings were indicative of chronic copper poisoning in affected sheep. Toxicological …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A total of 181 Jersey cows were used to investigate how leptin gene polymorphisms affect milk production traits such as milk yield, fat and protein yield, and fat and protein content. Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped, including the A59V in exon 3 and Sau3AI in intron 2. The genotype, allele, and haplotype frequencies were estimated. Statistical analysis revealed that the A59V polymorphism significantly affected the milk, protein, and fat yield (P Keywords: Leptin, SNP, Jersey cows, milk production traits
