Significance Of The Trace Fossil Zoophycos In Pliocene Deposits, Antarctic Continental Margin (Andrill 1b Drill Core), Molly F. Miller, Ellen A. Cowan, Simon H. H. Nielsen Jan 2009

Significance Of The Trace Fossil Zoophycos In Pliocene Deposits, Antarctic Continental Margin (Andrill 1b Drill Core), Molly F. Miller, Ellen A. Cowan, Simon H. H. Nielsen

ANDRILL Research and Publications

Zoophycos is a complex three dimensional trace fossil that is abundant in deep ocean sediments worldwide, but has not been described previously from Cenozoic continental margin deposits of Antarctica. In the ANDRILL 1B core drilled through the north-west McMurdo ice shelf, Zoophycos occurs in a 17m thick unit of interglacial sediments bounded above and below by glacial surfaces of erosion. This unit was deposited during the transition from the relatively warm Early Pliocene characterized by productive open waters to the cooler Late Pliocene with fluctuating subpolar ice sheets. Globally, Late Cenozoic Zoophycos are most abundant at great depths (.1000 m), …

Courtship Effort Is A Better Predictor Of Mating Success Than Ornamentation For Male Wolf Spiders, Paul S. Shamble, Dustin J. Wilgers, Katharine A. Swoboda, Eileen Hebets Jan 2009

Courtship Effort Is A Better Predictor Of Mating Success Than Ornamentation For Male Wolf Spiders, Paul S. Shamble, Dustin J. Wilgers, Katharine A. Swoboda, Eileen Hebets

Eileen Hebets Publications

Female mate choice decisions are often based on a variety of male characteristics, some of which may reflect male quality via condition-dependent trait expression. Here, we explore the condition dependence of a male secondary sexual trait in a wolf spider and examine its influence on female mate choice. In the wolf spider Schizocosa uetzi, mature males possess a multimodal courtship display (visual + seismic) in which they slowly raise and lower their dark colored forelegs. Foreleg color is highly variable among S. uetzi males with respect to both total amount and darkness. Using diet manipulations in conjunction with color …

Testing A Passive Tracking Index For Monitoring The Endangered Ethiopian Wolf, Paul Paul Evangelista, Richard M. Engeman, Lucy Tallents Jan 2009

Testing A Passive Tracking Index For Monitoring The Endangered Ethiopian Wolf, Paul Paul Evangelista, Richard M. Engeman, Lucy Tallents

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The endangered Ethiopian wolf is considered the rarest canid in Africa. The species faces many threats and is particularly vulnerable to diseases such as rabies. A simple, low-technology means to monitor populations would greatly facilitate conservation efforts, through early detection of population changes and behavior, and signaling a need for intervention. We tested a passive tracking index methodology, which has been a valuable tool for indexing canids and other species around the world. The method uses counts of track intrusions into plots placed in the animals’ routes of travel as the basis for calculating an index. Unlike for other species, …

Ecosystem Jenga!, Natalie Umphlett, Tierney Brosius, Ramesh Laungani, Diandra L. Leslie-Pelecky

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

Students are often taught that ecosystems are "delicately balanced," But what. exactly, does this mean? How do we help students relate what they learn in the classroom about ecosystems to the world immediately around them?

As scientists who work closely with middle school students as part of a National Science Foundation-funded Graduate Fellows in K-12 Education program called Project Fulcrum. we have learned that abstract concepts, such as "delicately balanced ecosystem," are often not truly understood. We addressed this concern in a seventh-grade science classroom in Lincoln. Nebraska. by introducing students to locally threatened saline wetlands and the endangered Salt …

In Vitro Inhibition By Aerosol-Ot Of Bacillus Anthracis Sterne Endospores, Andrea M. Rendziperis Jan 2009

In Vitro Inhibition By Aerosol-Ot Of Bacillus Anthracis Sterne Endospores, Andrea M. Rendziperis

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Bacillus anthracis is an endospore-forming, Gram-positive bacterium that is the causative agent of the disease anthrax. The sodium ion surfactant Aerosol-OT (AOT) has been shown to kill some species of Gram-positive bacteria. This study examined the effect of AOT on B. anthracis endospores and vegetative cells, to show any changes in germination and growth that could potentially affect host development of disease. B. anthracis endospores and vegetative cell cultures were exposed to varying levels of AOT and samples were heated to show the proportion of endospores, or washed of the supernatant to show any temporary inhibitory effects on growth. B. …

Cooperation And Competition: Nepotistic Tolerance And Intrasexual Aggression In Western Bluebird Winter Groups, Janis L. Dickinson, Melody Euaparadorn, Katherine Greenwald, Chandreyee Mitra, Daizaburo Shizuka Jan 2009

Cooperation And Competition: Nepotistic Tolerance And Intrasexual Aggression In Western Bluebird Winter Groups, Janis L. Dickinson, Melody Euaparadorn, Katherine Greenwald, Chandreyee Mitra, Daizaburo Shizuka

Papers in Ornithology

Two hypothesized benefits of delayed dispersal are access to resources and prolonged brood care (or parental nepotism). Resource abundance (mistletoe wealth) is a key factor influencing whether sons stay home in western bluebirds, Sialia mexicana, but nepotism is also observed. Western bluebird sons commonly remain in their family groups throughout the winter, whereas daughters usually disperse before winter. Because pairing often takes place in winter groups, with newly formed pairs settling on exclusive all-purpose territories in spring, selection for sexual competition and nepotism co-occur and may simultaneously influence patterns of aggression within groups. We measured aggression at mealworm feeder …

Molecular Evolution Of Cytochrome B In High- And Low-Altitude Deer Mice (Genus Peromyscus), E. J. Gering, J. C. Opazo, Jay F. Storz Jan 2009

Molecular Evolution Of Cytochrome B In High- And Low-Altitude Deer Mice (Genus Peromyscus), E. J. Gering, J. C. Opazo, Jay F. Storz

Jay F. Storz Publications

Patterns of amino-acid polymorphism in human mitochondrial genes have been interpreted as evidence for divergent selection among populations that inhabit climatically distinct environments. If similar patterns are mirrored in other broadly distributed mammalian species, then adaptive modifications of mitochondrial protein function may be detected in comparisons among locally adapted populations of a single wide-ranging species, or among closely related species that have adapted to different environments. Here, we test for evidence of positive selection on cytochrome b variation within and among species of the ecologically diverse rodent genus Peromyscus. We used likelihood-based comparisons of synonymous and nonsynonymous substitution rates to …
