Thirty-Seven Additional Microsatellite Loci In The Pacific Lion-Paw Scallop (Nodipecten Subnodosus) And Cross-Amplification In Other Pectinids, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Ana M. Ibarra, Bernie May

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

We characterized 37 new microsatellite markers in the Pacific lion-paw scallop (Nodipecten subnodosus) and tested for cross-amplification in four other species. Genetic diversity was estimated using 24 individuals from the Lagoon Ojo de Liebre, B.C.S., Mexico. Allelic richness varied from 5 to 27 alleles per locus and the average expected heterozygosity was 0.76. Ten loci exhibited significant departure from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium likely due to the presence of null alleles. Sixteen of these markers cross-amplified in closely related N. nodosus, while little or no amplification was observed in three Argopecten species.

Predicting Tissue Distribution And Partitioning In Terminal Sire Sheep Using X-Ray Computed Tomography, J. M. Macfarlane, R. M. Lewis, G. C. Emmans, M. J. Young, G. Simm

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The utility of x-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning in predicting carcass tissue distribution and fat partitioning in vivo in terminal sire sheep was examined using data from 160 lambs representing combinations of 3 breeds (Charollais, Suffolk, and Texel), 3 genetic lines, and both sexes. One-fifth of the lambs were slaughtered at each of 14, 18, and 22 wk of age, and the remaining two-fifths at 26 wk of age. The left side of each carcass was dissected into 8 joints with each joint dissected into fat (intermuscular and subcutaneous), lean, and bone. Chemical fat content of the LM was measured. …

Birds Of The Great Plains: Appendix A -- A Guide To Bird-Watching Localities In The Great Plains, Paul A. Johnsgard

Birds of the Great Plains (Revised Edition, 2009) by Paul Johnsgard

Partly on the basis of the availability of relatively complete bird lists available for the areas, I have included here forty-four state and federal parks, refuges, and other sanctuaries located within the region covered by this book. Nearly all the national wildlife refuges are included, except a number of smaller refuges for which bird lists are not available. Further, a group of four North Dakota national wildlife refuges in the Souris Valley is collectively considered in a "Souris Loop" category. In the discussion that follows and the associated list of summer birds, the localities are grouped by states, and the …

Birds Of The Rocky Mountains With Particular Reference To National Parks In The Northern Rocky Mountain Region, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 2009

Birds Of The Rocky Mountains With Particular Reference To National Parks In The Northern Rocky Mountain Region, Paul A. Johnsgard

Birds of the Rocky Mountains by Paul A. Johnsgard

Notwithstanding the great latitudinal spread and the equally wide altitudinal variations that occur in the region, the Rocky Mountains contain surprisingly uniform bird life. A bird-watcher in Banff or Jasper national parks in Alberta will encounter the vast majority of the same breeding species in the coniferous zones of those areas as one who is observing nearly a thousand miles to the south in Rocky Mountain National Park, although particular bird species would occur at considerably different altitudes.

This comprehensive reference work describes in detail 354 species found in a 353,000-square-mile area—from the 40th parallel in Colorado north to the …
