Comparison Of Replication-Competent, First Generation, And Helper-Dependent Adenoviral Vaccines, Eric A. Weaver, Pramod N. Nehete, Stephanie S. Buchl, Julien S. Senac, Donna Palmer, Philip Ng, K. Jagannadha Sastry, Michael A. Barry

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

All studies using human serotype 5 Adenovirus (Ad) vectors must address two major obstacles: safety and the presence of pre-existing neutralizing antibodies. Helper-Dependent (HD) Ads have been proposed as alternative vectors for gene therapy and vaccine development because they have an improved safety profile. To evaluate the potential of HD-Ad vaccines, we compared replication-competent (RC), first-generation (FG) and HD vectors for their ability to induce immune responses in mice. We show that RC-Ad5 and HD-Ad5 vectors generate stronger immune responses than FG-Ad5 vectors. HD-Ad5 vectors gave lower side effects than RC or FG-Ad, producing lower levels of tissue damage and …

Immigrants' Rights In The Public Sphere: Hannah Arendt's Concepts Reconsidered, San Martín

Societies Without Borders

Based on Arendt's concepts of public and private spheres, immigration issues can be approached from an emphasis on how the most fundamental of all human rights, which is being denied to immigrants, is the most basic constituent of the human condition: the ability to interact in the public realm through action and speech. The granting of this right would enable immigrants to become unique human beings, with the capacity for transformation. As they are presently deprived of these and other rights, they are confined to the most primitive sphere, that is, the one of pure survival. Therefore, a differentiation must …

Conserving Marine Wildlife Through World Trade Law, Eric A. Bilsky Jan 2009

Conserving Marine Wildlife Through World Trade Law, Eric A. Bilsky

Michigan Journal of International Law

Part I of this Essay marshals the evidence that fisheries around the world are in peril from destructive fishing practices. Part II argues that most fisheries management regimes are ineffective at counteracting the political pressures and economic incentives that lead to unsustainable fishing. Part III makes the case that government subsidies are major enablers of overfishing. The fourth and final Part discusses the continuing efforts to use international trade regulation to eliminate overfishing subsidies and halt the collapse of the world's marine fish populations.

Assemblage-Oriented Ocean Resource Management: How The Marine Environment Washes Over Traditional Territorial Lines, John A. Duff Jan 2009

Assemblage-Oriented Ocean Resource Management: How The Marine Environment Washes Over Traditional Territorial Lines, John A. Duff

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Essay assesses challenges that arise when marine territorial boundaries do not encompass the appropriate assemblage of resources and relationships necessary for effective authority and management. It reviews the manner in which certain offshore resource uses have been "quasi-territorialized" by the application of other forms of jurisdiction. It also highlights regime-jurisdiction-private interest-oriented responses to territory-oriented challenges in the form of assemblages of authority, interests, space, and time. Given the scalar progression of the links in the discussion, the assessment moves from international principles to exercises of national sovereignty to domestic administration of space and resources to private legal interests.

Loss Of P2rx7 Receptor Activity In Mrl Lpr/Lpr T Lymphocytes Correlates With The Expression Of B220, Anne-Laure Grignon Jan 2009

Loss Of P2rx7 Receptor Activity In Mrl Lpr/Lpr T Lymphocytes Correlates With The Expression Of B220, Anne-Laure Grignon

Theses & ETDs

During the immune response, T lymphocytes activated by a particular antigen undergo a very important expansion phase. These lymphocytes must be rapidly depleted at the end of the response in order to maintain the critical homeostasis governing the immune system (Hildeman et al., 2002). This negative regulation is effected, partly, by the apoptotic receptor Fas and of its ligand, FasL, expressed at the surface of activated T lymphocytes. In MRL lpr/lpr mice, as in patients affected by the autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS), the mutation of the fas gene is responsible for the development of systematic autoimmune pathologies such as systemic …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2008-2009, Bruce B. Johnson, Ryan Lukassen Jan 2009

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 2008-2009, Bruce B. Johnson, Ryan Lukassen

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Following strong value advances over the past several years, Nebraska farmland values throttled down and stabilized across most of the state during the 12-month period ending February 1, 2009. According the 2009 UNL Nebraska Farm Real Estate Survey, the average all-land value rose just over 1% for the year. Some modest decreases in value were reported for some classes of land, but relative to recent trends for residential and commercial property across the U.S., stable values for agricultural land speaks to its relative strength in the current recession.

Regional differences in value shifts were rather significant over the time period. …

Board-Invited Review: Porcine Mucosal Immunity Of The Gastrointestinal Tract, Thomas E. Burkey, K. A. Skjolaas, J. E. Minton Jan 2009

Board-Invited Review: Porcine Mucosal Immunity Of The Gastrointestinal Tract, Thomas E. Burkey, K. A. Skjolaas, J. E. Minton

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) constitutes one of the largest immunological organs of the body. The GIT must permit absorption of nutrients while also maintaining the ability to respond appropriately to a diverse milieu of dietary and microbial antigenic components. Because of the diverse population of antigenic components within the GIT, a sophisticated mucosal immune system has evolved that relies on collaboration between the innate and adaptive arms of immunity. The collaborative, mucosal immune effort offers protection from harmful pathogens while also being tolerant of dietary antigens and normal microbial flora. Knowledge with respect to porcine mucosal immunity is important as …

Sorted steers were placed into 1 of 3 groups—1) heavy steers (32%; 468 kg), 2) medium steers (44%; 432 kg), or 3) light steers (24%; 399 kg)—and were fed for 97, 118, or …

Influence Of Corn Hybrid Traits And Processing Method On Nutrient Digestibility, Matt K. Luebbe, G. E. Erickson, T. J. Klopfenstein, W. A. Fithian Jan 2009

Influence Of Corn Hybrid Traits And Processing Method On Nutrient Digestibility, Matt K. Luebbe, G. E. Erickson, T. J. Klopfenstein, W. A. Fithian

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of corn hybrid and processing method on the site and extent of nutrient digestibility and ruminal fermentation. Treatments consisted of 2 processing methods, dry-rolled corn (DRC) and high-moisture corn (HMC), and 3 hybrids, H-8562 (1), 33P67 (2), and H-9230 (3), in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement. In Exp. 1, six ruminally cannulated crossbred steers (436 ± 8 kg) were used in a 6 × 6 Latin square design. Total tract DM, OM, and starch digestibility (STD) were greater (P < 0.10) for HMC compared with DRC. A hybrid × processing method interaction (P < 0.10) was observed for propionate concentration and the acetate-to-propionate ratio. In Exp. 2, two ruminally and duodenally fistulated steers were used to determine the site and extent of nutrient digestion using the mobile bag technique at 2 ruminal incubation times. Ruminal STD was not different (P = 0.14) among hybrids but was greater (P < 0.01) for HMC compared with DRC. Postruminal and total tract STD were greater (P < 0.01) for hybrids 1 and 3 than for hybrid 2, and were greater (P < 0.01) for HMC than DRC. In both experiments the geometric mean diameter and geometric SD were influenced (P < 0.05) by both hybrid and processing method. More intense processing methods or selection of hybrids with softer kernels will result in greater digestibility and ruminal propionate concentrations. Digestibility of corn samples can be characterized using the mobile bag technique but particle size can influence results.
