Economic Diversification And Sustainable Development: The Role Non-Timber Forest Products Play In The Monetization Of Kayapó Livelihoods , Laura C. Zanotti
Economic Diversification And Sustainable Development: The Role Non-Timber Forest Products Play In The Monetization Of Kayapó Livelihoods , Laura C. Zanotti
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
This paper analyzes the level of market integration of a relatively isolated Kayapó community. The goal is to understand how the commercial networks devoted to non-timber forest products are affecting one community by including cash-income into the economic life of communities previously dominated by non-monetary transactions but currently dominated by a mix of monetary and non-monetary practices. Non-timber forest product projects are a much lauded and much criticized form of sustainable forestry management. This case study analyses different non-timber forest product projects in Aukre, a village that is part of the Kayapó Indigenous Territories, Brazil. Th is article identifi es …

Reviving A Traditional Pasture Management System In Fentale, East Central Ethiopia, Shimelis Beyene, Dafa Gudina
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
In this paper, we describe the process of establishing dry season grass reserves, traditionally known as kalo, among Kereyu and Ittu pastoralists of Fentale in the Awash Valley of eastern central Ethiopia. The data were primarily collected using qualitative research methods such as key informant interviews, group discussions, field observations, and records of community meetings and non-governmental organization (NGO) project reports. In the last decade and a half, several attempts were made by NGOs and local governments to encourage pastoralists to revive their traditional practices of setting aside grass reserves for seasonal grazing, but only a few such private enclosures …
Subsistence And Seasonality At A Late Prehistoric House Pit In Northwest Alaska, Scott Shirar
Subsistence And Seasonality At A Late Prehistoric House Pit In Northwest Alaska, Scott Shirar
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
In this report, I examine a house from a Late Prehistoric village site near the confluence of Maiyumerak Creek and the Noatak River in the Noatak National Preserve, Alaska. In 2006, several thousand artifacts and over 100,000 faunal remains were excavated from this approximately 500-year-old house. Faunal remains and subsistencerelated artifacts associated with the living fl oor of the house were analyzed to assess diet and seasonal occupation. I also address how this house fits into previously proposed Late Prehistoric land- and resource-use models. The dietary reconstruction shows that both classes of data (artifacts and fauna) indicate a primary reliance …

Animal Welfare: Societal Perspectives And The Path To Permanent Change, Janet Linn Horton
Animal Welfare: Societal Perspectives And The Path To Permanent Change, Janet Linn Horton
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive
During the past 200 years animal welfare has been changing in a direction that is providing animals with a protection they have not always had. As society began to research the study of animal dynamics, there was a discovery on the importance in providing animals' moral consideration. Animal's societies have been created in order to provide protection the animals need and in order to seek sanctions for those who violate the laws and cause unnecessary pain and suffering to them. Animals have become a major part of business today, not only for the law abiding society members but for the …
Dynamic Scene Interpretation And Understanding From Two Views, Ninad Shashikant Thakoor
Dynamic Scene Interpretation And Understanding From Two Views, Ninad Shashikant Thakoor
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Interpretation of a static or dynamic scene starts by segmenting the scene followed by recognition. Our work concentrates on the general problem of segmenting and recognizing animate and inanimate objects in a scene captured from two different views. The two views here refer to either a pair of frames captured by a stereo camera or two frames (with spatial overlap) captured with a moving camera. The work described in the dissertation starts with an iterative split-and-merge framework for segmentation of an unknown number of objects captured with stereo camera. The disparity of a scene is modeled by approximating various surfaces in …
Determining The Phylogeographic Dynamics Of The Edge Relationships Between Aphonopelma Hentzi (Girard) And Its Neighbors Along The Colorado River Basin (Araneae, Mygalomorphae, Theraphosidae), Chris A. Hamilton
Biology Theses - Archive
Theraphosids, commonly known as “tarantulasâ€, are a group of large, hirsute spiders that have drawn relatively little interest in ecological, behavioral, or evolutionary research from biologists. The lack of research on theraphosids is problematic because of conservation concerns for this group and the need to compile good life history data, and determine taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships. I examined the phylogenetic relationships among populations of tarantulas of the genus Aphonopelma along the Colorado River basin in Texas to construct a framework within which to test ecological, evolutionary, and biogeographical hypotheses in an area of species transition and possible Pleistocene refugia. In …

Primary Cilia: Highly Sophisticated Biological Sensors, Wissam A. Aboualaiwi, Shao T. Lo, Surya M. Nauli
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Primary cilia, thin hair-like structures protruding from the apical surface of most mammalian cells, have gained the attention of many researchers over the past decade. Primary cilia are microtubule-filled sensory organelles that are enclosed within the ciliary membrane. They originate at the cell surface from the mother centriole that becomes the mature basal body. In this review, we will discuss recent literatures on the roles of cilia as sophisticated sensory organelles. With particular emphasis on vascular endothelia and renal epithelia, the mechanosensory role of cilia in sensing fluid shear stress will be discussed. Also highlighted is the ciliary involvement in …

Assessment Of Biology Majors’ Versus Nonmajors’ Views On Evolution, Creationism, And Intelligent Design, Guillermo Paz-Y-Mino C., Avelina Espinosa
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
The controversy around evolution, creationism, and intelligent design resides in a historical struggle between scientific knowledge and popular belief. Four hundred seventy-six students (biology majors n=237, nonmajors n=239) at a secular liberal arts private university in Northeastern United States responded to a five-question survey to assess their views about: (1) evolution, creationism, and intelligent design in the science class; (2) students’ attitudes toward evolution; (3) students’ position about the teaching of human evolution; (4) evolution in science exams; and (5) students’ willingness to discuss evolution openly. There were 60.6% of biology majors and 42% of nonmajors supported the exclusive teaching …

Technological advance in undersea exploration (e.g. tethered cameras, remotely operated vehicles [ROVs], Autonomous Underwater Vehicles [AUVsG, and manned submersibles)have opened new windows into diversityand distribution of fragile gelatinous organisms in the vast mesopelagic realm(300 m-1000 m deep). While exstraordinary in expanding our view of its richness, mesopelagic exploration remains largely a "look but don't touch" environment and this limits of our ability to understand these animals through physical manipulation relevant to the finer scales of the individual organism. We have been conducting a series of in situ observations and manipulations using blue-water SCUBA during the night at a 1, 200 …

Recently, bmr6 plants were shown to have limited cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase activity (CAD; EC 1.1.1.195), the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of hydroxycinnamoyl aldehydes (monolignals) to monolignols. A candidate gene approach was taken to identify Bmr6. Two CAD genes (Sb02g024190 and Sb04g005950) were identified in the sorghum genome based on similarity to known CAD genes and through DNA sequencing a nonsense mutation was discovered in Sb04g005950 that results in a truncated protein lacking the NADPH-binding and C-terminal catalytic domains. Immunoblotting confirmed that the Bmr6 protein was absent in protein extracts from bmr6 plants. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that Bmr6 is …

In order to increase the immune breadth of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccines, strategies such
as immunization with several HIV antigens or centralized immunogens have been examined. HIV-1 gp120
protein is a major immunogen of HIV and has been routinely considered for inclusion in both present and
future AIDS vaccines. However, recent studies proposed that gp120 interferes with the generation of immune
response to codelivered antigens. Here, we investigate whether coimmunization with plasmid-encoded gp120
alters the immune response to other coadministered plasmid encoded antigens such as luciferase or ovalbumin
in a mouse model. We found that the presence of gp120 …

Comparison Of Replication-Competent, First Generation, And Helper-Dependent Adenoviral Vaccines, Eric A. Weaver, Pramod N. Nehete, Stephanie S. Buchl, Julien S. Senac, Donna Palmer, Philip Ng, K. Jagannadha Sastry, Michael A. Barry
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
All studies using human serotype 5 Adenovirus (Ad) vectors must address two major obstacles: safety and the presence of pre-existing neutralizing antibodies. Helper-Dependent (HD) Ads have been proposed as alternative vectors for gene therapy and vaccine development because they have an improved safety profile. To evaluate the potential of HD-Ad vaccines, we compared replication-competent (RC), first-generation (FG) and HD vectors for their ability to induce immune responses in mice. We show that RC-Ad5 and HD-Ad5 vectors generate stronger immune responses than FG-Ad5 vectors. HD-Ad5 vectors gave lower side effects than RC or FG-Ad, producing lower levels of tissue damage and …

Immigrants' Rights In The Public Sphere: Hannah Arendt's Concepts Reconsidered, San Martín
Societies Without Borders
Based on Arendt's concepts of public and private spheres, immigration issues can be approached from an emphasis on how the most fundamental of all human rights, which is being denied to immigrants, is the most basic constituent of the human condition: the ability to interact in the public realm through action and speech. The granting of this right would enable immigrants to become unique human beings, with the capacity for transformation. As they are presently deprived of these and other rights, they are confined to the most primitive sphere, that is, the one of pure survival. Therefore, a differentiation must …
Conserving Marine Wildlife Through World Trade Law, Eric A. Bilsky
Conserving Marine Wildlife Through World Trade Law, Eric A. Bilsky
Michigan Journal of International Law
Part I of this Essay marshals the evidence that fisheries around the world are in peril from destructive fishing practices. Part II argues that most fisheries management regimes are ineffective at counteracting the political pressures and economic incentives that lead to unsustainable fishing. Part III makes the case that government subsidies are major enablers of overfishing. The fourth and final Part discusses the continuing efforts to use international trade regulation to eliminate overfishing subsidies and halt the collapse of the world's marine fish populations.
Assemblage-Oriented Ocean Resource Management: How The Marine Environment Washes Over Traditional Territorial Lines, John A. Duff
Assemblage-Oriented Ocean Resource Management: How The Marine Environment Washes Over Traditional Territorial Lines, John A. Duff
Michigan Journal of International Law
This Essay assesses challenges that arise when marine territorial boundaries do not encompass the appropriate assemblage of resources and relationships necessary for effective authority and management. It reviews the manner in which certain offshore resource uses have been "quasi-territorialized" by the application of other forms of jurisdiction. It also highlights regime-jurisdiction-private interest-oriented responses to territory-oriented challenges in the form of assemblages of authority, interests, space, and time. Given the scalar progression of the links in the discussion, the assessment moves from international principles to exercises of national sovereignty to domestic administration of space and resources to private legal interests.
