Effects Of Delayed And Immediate Feedback In The Computer -Based Testing Environment, Luis Lopez Jan 2009

Effects Of Delayed And Immediate Feedback In The Computer -Based Testing Environment, Luis Lopez

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students in a first year introductory chemistry course in a secondary school were subjected to a series of computer-based exams to determine if timing of feedback could improve retention of content on a final exam and if motivation toward science learning had an interaction on student abilities to construct meaningful learning under each of the conditions. The computer-based tests that provided immediate feedback, delayed feedback or end of test feedback did not improve retention on a performance test given after a series of 5 exams under each of the conditions. In addition, the level of motivation also had no affect …

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

One of the most challenging tasks in constructing a mathematical model of cancer treatment is the calculation of biological parameters from empirical data. This task becomes increasingly difficult if a model involves several cell populations and treatment modalities. A sophisticated model constructed by de Pillis et al., Mixed immunotherapy and chemotherapy of tumours: Modelling, applications and biological interpretations, J. Theor. Biol. 238 (2006), pp. 841–862; involves tumour cells, specific and non-specific immune cells (natural killer (NK) cells, CD8 T cells and other lymphocytes) and employs chemotherapy and two types of immunotherapy (IL-2 supplementation and CD8 T-cell infusion) as treatment modalities. …

Emergency Department Capacity Planning For A Pandemic Scenario: Nurse Allocation, Florentino Antonio Rico Jan 2009

Emergency Department Capacity Planning For A Pandemic Scenario: Nurse Allocation, Florentino Antonio Rico

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The problem considered in this research is the efficient allocation of resources in an emergency department during a large flow of patient consequent to a pandemic influenza breakout. Predicting the impact of a Pandemic Influenza is very complex due to the many unknown variables that may play a role to how severe a pandemic can be. Scenario planning is considered in this research to forecast different potential outcomes and help decision makers better understand the role of uncertainties and become prepared to make important decisions. The goal is to first create a forecast model to estimate the patient demand during …

Carbon Capture And Sequestration: Identifying And Managing Risks, Alexandra B. Klass, Elizabeth J. Wilson Jan 2009

Carbon Capture And Sequestration: Identifying And Managing Risks, Alexandra B. Klass, Elizabeth J. Wilson

Articles

Carbon capture and geologic sequestration (CCS) technology promises to provide deep emissions cuts, particularly from coal power generation, but deploying CCS creates risks of its own. This article first considers the risks associated with CCS, which involves capturing CO{sub 2} emissions from industrial sources and power plants, transporting the CO{sub 2} by pipeline, and injecting it underground for permanent sequestration. The article then suggests ways in which these risks can be minimized and managed and considers more broadly when or if CCS should be deployed or whether its use should be limited or rejected in favor of other solutions.

Making Sense Of Drug Regulation: A Theory Of Law For Drug Control Policy , Kimani Paul-Emile Jan 2009

Making Sense Of Drug Regulation: A Theory Of Law For Drug Control Policy , Kimani Paul-Emile

Faculty Scholarship

This article advances a new theory of drug regulation that addresses two previously unexamined questions: how law-makers are able to regulate drugs differently irrespective of the dangers the drugs may pose and independent of their health effects, and the process followed to achieve this phenomenon. For example, although tobacco products are the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. they can be bought and sold legally by adults, while marijuana, a substantially safer drug, is subject to the highest level of drug control. This article posits a conceptual model for making sense of this dissonance and applies this model …

Mayer, Mashkoor A. Malik, Andrew B. Cooper, Holly Abeels, Jennifer K. Greene, Melissa Brodeur, Andrew A. Rosenberg

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The recovery of benthic communities inside the western Gulf of Maine fishing closure area was evaluated by comparing invertebrate assemblages at sites inside and outside of the closure four to six years after the closure was established. The major restriction imposed by the closure was a year-round prohibition of bottom gillnets and otter trawls. A total of 163 seafloor sites (~half inside and half outside the closure) within a 515-km2 study area were sampled with some combination of Shipek grab, Wildco box corer, or underwater video. Bottom types ranged from mud (silt and clay) to boulders, and the effects of …

Visual Versus Auditory Learning And Memory Recall Performance On Short-Term Versus Long-Term Tests, Katie Lindner, Greta Blosser, Kris Cunigan Jan 2009

Visual Versus Auditory Learning And Memory Recall Performance On Short-Term Versus Long-Term Tests, Katie Lindner, Greta Blosser, Kris Cunigan

Modern Psychological Studies

Our study explored the influence of visual versus auditory learning on recall of a memory test. There were four groups in our study, two of which heard an article, and two of which read an article. All groups were then given a posttest to assess their recall. Two of the four groups took an immediate posttest, and the other two took a delayed posttest 45 minutes after hearing or reading the article. Visual learning outperformed auditory learning in both the immediate post-test condition, as well as in the delayed post-test condition. Overall, our study found that visual learning produced better …

Endocrine Disrupting Compound Levels Of The Kishwaukee River Near The Northern Illinois University Community, Matthew James Kararo Jan 2009

Endocrine Disrupting Compound Levels Of The Kishwaukee River Near The Northern Illinois University Community, Matthew James Kararo

Honors Capstones

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDO) are quickly becoming an area of intensifying research across many scientific fields. EDCs come from non-point sources in most cases, but this research aims to narrow the source of at least a portion of the EDC levels presort in the Kishwaukee River to the community of students and faculty at Northern Illinois University in De Kalb, Illinois. Our working hypothesis is that detectable levels of EDCs in the effluent of a wastewater treatment place will fluctuate from relatively higher levels during the fall and spring semesters to relatively low levels during winter vacation. We tested for …

The behavioral changes and …

The Increase In Renal Sodium Excretion In Response To Angiotensin Ii Infusion In Exercised Female Rats Is Dependent On A Rise In Renal Perfusion Pressure, Karmon Janssen Jan 2009

The Increase In Renal Sodium Excretion In Response To Angiotensin Ii Infusion In Exercised Female Rats Is Dependent On A Rise In Renal Perfusion Pressure, Karmon Janssen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Prior studies in this lab have shown that chronically exercised female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats excrete a greater amount of sodium in response to angiotensin II (Ang II) infusion than do sedentary rats. The current study determined if the difference in renal sodium excretion persisted when the renal perfusion pressure (RPP) was held constant. Female SHR and female WKY rats were separated into sedentary and exercised groups at 4 weeks of age. The exercise group voluntarily exercised for at least eight weeks using an exercise wheel and time/distance monitor. At 13 weeks of age or older, …

Socioeconomic Status, Child Health, And Future Outcomes: Lessons For Appalachia, Janet Currie Jan 2009

Socioeconomic Status, Child Health, And Future Outcomes: Lessons For Appalachia, Janet Currie

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Appalachians are in poor health relative to other Americans. For example, the ageadjusted all cause mortality rate for Appalachian in 2006 was over 900 per 100,000 compared to a rate of 760 per 100,000 for those outside of Appalachia. This essay shows that health disparities start before birth—the incidence of low birth weight is 90 1,000 in rural Appalachia compared to 83 per 1,000 outside the U.S. These disparities continue through childhood and into adulthood. Moreover, although African Americans are generally in poorer health relative to white Americans, disparities between Appalachia and the rest of the U.S. are much greater …

Nazis In America, Sean Amodeo Jan 2009

Nazis In America, Sean Amodeo

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

On May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered. After years of bloody and terrible fighting, the Allied powers had finally beaten the German war machine. Three years earlier, in June 1942, that victory looked far from inevitable. German U-boats attacked Allied ships all along the American coast, rattling America and revealing its vulnerability. Into this climate of uncertainty and fear, the German army launched Operation Pastorius. Their objective: to secretly land eight men along the eastern seaboard carrying explosives, equipment, and large sums of American money. They planned to sabotage the American war effort. On June 13, 1942, the first group of …

An exploratory study that brings together hypertext theory, contextual, holistic approaches, and information behavior, this research includes a focus group of current undergraduate and graduate students to gather fresh details about information-seeking for a graduate program …

Using Calculus To Model The Growth Of L. Plantarum Bacteria, Erin Carey Jan 2009

Using Calculus To Model The Growth Of L. Plantarum Bacteria, Erin Carey

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Experimental data for the growth of Lactobacillus plantarum bacteria have been obtained over time, creating the need for mathematical means to model this data. We use the Gompertz model because it is a sigmoid function for a time series, where growth is slowest at the start and end of a time period. The Gompertz model is especially useful because it defines specific parameters that characterize the S-shaped curve. In addition, the Gompertz model uses relative growth, which is the logarithm of the given population compared to the initial population. This reflects the fact that bacteria grow exponentially. The important parameters …

Biodiversity In A Florida Sandhill Ecosystem, Samantha Robertson Jan 2009

Biodiversity In A Florida Sandhill Ecosystem, Samantha Robertson

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

This project compares two transects of land in the University of South Florida's Botanical Gardens for their biodiversity. The transects were chosen to represent a Florida sandhill ecosystem and the individual Longleaf Pine, Saw Palmetto, Turkey Oak, Laurel Oak and Live Oak specimens were counted. All other species above waist height were counted as "other"?. Once the individuals were counted, the Simpson's and Shannon-Wiener indices were calculated. Since the Shannon-Wiener index incorporates several diversity characteristics, it is typically more reliable than Simpson's. However, both biodiversity indices agreed that transect B was more diverse than transect A.

Global Chloroplast Phylogeny And Biogeography Of Bracken (Pteridium: Dennstaedtiaceae), Joshua P. Der, J. A. Thomson, J. K. Stratford, Paul G. Wolf Jan 2009

Global Chloroplast Phylogeny And Biogeography Of Bracken (Pteridium: Dennstaedtiaceae), Joshua P. Der, J. A. Thomson, J. K. Stratford, Paul G. Wolf

Biology Faculty Publications

Bracken ferns (genus Pteridium ) represent an ancient species complex with a natural worldwide distribution. Pteridium has historically been treated as comprising a single species, but recent treatments have recognized several related species. Phenotypic plasticity, geographically structured morphological variation, and geographically biased sampling have all contributed to taxonomic confusion in the genus. We sampled bracken specimens worldwide and used variable regions of the chloroplast genome to investigate phylogeography and reticulate evolution within the genus. Our results distinguish two major clades within Pteridium , a primarily northern hemisphere Laurasian/African clade, which includes all taxa currently assigned to P. aquilinum , and …
