Physical Ergonomic And Mental Workload Factors Of Mobile Learning Affecting Performance Of Adult Distance Learners: Student Pers, Rochelle Jones Jan 2009

Physical Ergonomic And Mental Workload Factors Of Mobile Learning Affecting Performance Of Adult Distance Learners: Student Pers, Rochelle Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Distance education is the fastest growing educational modality because of advances information technology has made over the past 25 years. Adult learners have become the fastest growing population in distance education. Adult learners, through technical tools and devices they use on the job, have become more digitally literate and mobile, making the ability to access class work on the go a necessity. Mobile learning or m-learning (learning that uses wireless, portable, mobile computing, and communication devices) is becoming an extension of distance learning, providing a channel for students to learn, communicate, and access educational material outside the traditional classroom environment. …

Realnav: Exploring Natural User Interfaces For Locomotion In Video Games, Brian Williamson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We present an exploration into realistic locomotion interfaces in video games using spatially convenient input hardware. In particular, we use Nintendo Wii Remotes to create natural mappings between user actions and their representation in a video game. Targeting American Football video games, we used the role of the quarterback as an exemplar since the game player needs to maneuver effectively in a small area, run down the field, and perform evasive gestures such as spinning, jumping, or the "juke". In our study, we developed three locomotion techniques. The first technique used a single Wii Remote, placed anywhere on the user's …

Combat Veterans, Mental Health Issues, And The Death Penalty: Addressing The Impact Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And Traumatic Brain Injury, Anthony E. Giardino Jan 2009

Combat Veterans, Mental Health Issues, And The Death Penalty: Addressing The Impact Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And Traumatic Brain Injury, Anthony E. Giardino

Fordham Law Review

More than 1.5 million Americans have participated in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past seven years. Some of these veterans have subsequently committed capital crimes and found themselves in our nation’s criminal justice system. This Essay argues that combat veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury at the time of their offenses should not be subject to the death penalty. Offering mitigating evidence regarding military training, post-traumatic stress disorder, and traumatic brain injury presents one means that combat veterans may use to argue for their lives during the sentencing phase of their trials. Alternatively, …

Ferreting Out Favoritism: Bringing Pretext Claims After Kelo, Daniel S. Hafetz Jan 2009

Ferreting Out Favoritism: Bringing Pretext Claims After Kelo, Daniel S. Hafetz

Fordham Law Review

In 2005, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Kelo v. City of New London that governments may take one’s private property and give it to another for the purpose of promoting economic development.  The Court held that, in evaluating Fifth Amendment challenges to such takings, courts should defer to legislative judgments as to what constitutes a valid public purpose.  Critics argue that this decision opened the floodgates to pretextual abuse.  Specifically, they contend that local governments that exercise the eminent domain power are often motivated by a desire to favor another private party.  After Kelo, courts have struggled to reconcile …

Meet Two-Face: The Dualististic Rule 10b-5 And The Quandry Of Offsetting Losses By Gains, Samuel Francis Jan 2009

Meet Two-Face: The Dualististic Rule 10b-5 And The Quandry Of Offsetting Losses By Gains, Samuel Francis

Fordham Law Review

The challenge of calculating damages in securities litigation is often compounded by the phenomenon of investors that have accrued both gains and losses as a result of the defendant company’s same fraudulent misrepresentations. This Note traces the opposing damages approaches and accounting methods courts have adopted in these instances to the dual origins and objectives of the Rule 10b-5 private right of action. Underscoring the shortcomings in these damages calculations founded predominantly upon either deterrent or compensatory grounds, this Note instead strives for a measure that not only balances both imperative ends but also yields a more sensible and equitable …

The Effects Of Buckminster Fullerenes On Mitochondrial Function, Sara Rosario Jan 2009

The Effects Of Buckminster Fullerenes On Mitochondrial Function, Sara Rosario

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Since the discovery of Buckminster Fullerenes (C60), this carbon nanoparticle has been the subject of intense study. C60 has been investigated in such applications as photodynamic therapy of cancer, photovoltaic cells, semiconductors, and enzyme inhibition. Despite two decades of research, the biological effects of C60 remain a mystery. The intention of this study was to examine the effects of Buckminster Fullerenes on mitochondrial function in an effort to determine the concentration of C60 as well as the time frame of exposure that causes maximum dysfunction. Thus, bovine heart mitochondria were exposed to different doses of C60 (2 -35 ppm). To …

Stat5 Regulation Of Bcl10 Parallels Constitutive Nfkappab Activation In Lymphoid Tumor Cells., Zsuzsanna S Nagy, Matthew J Lebaron, Jeremy A Ross, Abhisek Mitra, Hallgeir Rui, Robert A Kirken

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 5 A and B (STAT5) are key survival factors in cells of the lymphoid lineage. Identification of novel, tissue-specific STAT5 regulated genes would advance the ability to combat diseases due to aberrant STAT5 signaling. In the present work a library of human STAT5 bound genomic elements was created and validated. RESULTS: Of several STAT5 responsive genomic regulatory elements identified, one was located within the first intron of the human BCL10 gene. Chromatin immuno-precipitation reactions confirmed constitutive in vivo STAT5 binding to this intronic fragment in various human lymphoid tumor cell lines. Interestingly, non-phosphorylated …
