The findings of this study demonstrate the background knowledge and resources that teachers need to increase their implementation of Holocaust education in the classroom. Suggestions …

Impacts Of Harmful Algal Blooms On A Florida Reef Fish Community, Rex E Jr Baumberger Jan 2008

Impacts Of Harmful Algal Blooms On A Florida Reef Fish Community, Rex E Jr Baumberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Coral reefs worldwide are threatened by many environmental disturbances including harmful algal blooms (HABs) which have been increasing on Florida coasts over the past decade. Research has mainly focused on HAB identification, percent cover and other effects on the benthos but the relationship of HABs with upper trophic levels has received less attention. To study this relationship, a two-year investigation on a 10-m deep reef off of Hallandale Beach, was conducted. Stationary fish census coupled with benthic transect videos were conducted quarterly between April 2005-July 2007. A significant correlation between Lyngbya sp. blooms and alterations in fish assemblages was observed. …

When it is imperative to quickly create a business relationship between individuals that are unknown to each other, identifying the city or region of the individual with whom a relationship is being formed and understanding that culture will help build a …

Isolation And Characterization Of Novel Conopeptides From The Marine Cone Snail, Fred C. Pflueger Jan 2008

Isolation And Characterization Of Novel Conopeptides From The Marine Cone Snail, Fred C. Pflueger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Cone snails are predatory marine gastropods that use venom for means of predation and defense. This venom is a complex mixture of conopeptides that selectivity binds to ion channels and receptors, giving them a wide range of potential pharmaceutical applications. Conus brunneus is a wide spread Eastern Pacific cone snail species that preys upon worms (vermivorous). Vermivorous cone snails have developed very specific biochemical strategies for the immobilization of their prey and their venom has not been extensively studied to date. The main objective of this dissertation is the characterization of novel conopeptides isolated from Conus brunneus. Chapter 1 is …

Infant Jealousy Responses: Temperament And Eeg, Krystal D. Mize Jan 2008

Infant Jealousy Responses: Temperament And Eeg, Krystal D. Mize

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Jealousy results from the fear of loss of an important relationship partner or his/her exclusive attention (Neu, 1980; Tov-Ruach, 1980). Infants are dependant on their caregivers for basic needs and emotional support. Therefore, if an infant perceives that a rival threatens the parent-child dyad relationship, it is possible that the infant will respond in a jealous manner just as adults do when their important relationships are threatened . Although infants have limited emotional understanding, Palmer and Palmer (2002) suggest that jealousy evolved out of other resource-protecting drives. Because parental care is a valuable resource, supporting survival, infants may have at …

Indians And Underdogs, Sarah Anne Nohe Jan 2008

Indians And Underdogs, Sarah Anne Nohe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis examines identity as a process, how it is a reflection of, or reaction to, social, economic, and political circumstances. Identity is examined, through an ethnographically informed analysis, as it is represented, contested, and focused in the visual discourse of a small population. The research suggests that identity manifests at specific and strategic moments within the symbolic practices of resistance in coastal Ecuador. Grievances to economic and political power structures are acted out in clear-cut identity terms, or motifs, and function to organize diverse interests into social action. The study illustrates two identity motifs that are commonly asserted in …

The study examines numerous factors including Japan's technological and militaristic evolution, its psychological and political barriers …

Institutional Distance, Social Capital, And The Performance Of Foreign Acquisitions In The United States, Daniel Rottig Jan 2008

Institutional Distance, Social Capital, And The Performance Of Foreign Acquisitions In The United States, Daniel Rottig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation examined the roles of institutional distance and corporate social capital in the unique context of foreign acquisitions in the United States. A conceptual framework was developed which suggests that institutional distance has a dual impact on international acquisition performance. Institutional distance makes it more difficult for foreign acquirers to establish legitimacy in the United States, and therefore adversely affects acquisition success. Institutional distance also has a beneficial effect on acquisition performance to the extent to which it provides valuable opportunities for institutional arbitrage. Corporate social capital was discussed as a strategy to aid foreign MNCs in overcoming the …

La Satire Comme Critique Sociale Chez Balzac, Galina Paramonova Jan 2008

La Satire Comme Critique Sociale Chez Balzac, Galina Paramonova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

As one of the founders of the realist novel, Balzac is praised for having invented returning characters and interwoven chronologies that serve to challenge the decadent social mores of his time, but critical discussions of Balzacs's work continue to neglect his use of satire in social criticism. Different modes of satire occure in his LePere Goriot (1835), Le Bat de Sceaux (1829), Gobseck (1830), La Maison Nucingen (1837), Le Depute dArcis (1847), and La Femme abandonnee (1822), which together attest that Balzac achieves his ambition to become both the Rabelais and the Moliere of his era.

Lived Experience Of Adolescent Females Who Self-Injure By Cutting, Rhonda Goodman Lesniak Jan 2008

Lived Experience Of Adolescent Females Who Self-Injure By Cutting, Rhonda Goodman Lesniak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Self-injury behavior is identified as the non-suicidal, deliberate infliction of a wound to oneself in an attempt to seek expression. Self-injury is becoming more prevalent in the adolescent population; however, many nursing professionals are unaware of this phenomenon and the implications it holds for nursing. Approximately 12 to 17 percent of adolescents deliberately injure themselves although accurate statistics are difficult to obtain due to the secret and private nature of the behavior. Nurses, especially those who care for adolescents, could benefit from an understanding of the implications of self-injury, the characteristics of adolescents who self-injure, the expressivity of the behavior, …

Man In The Age Of Mechanical Reproduction, Charles Barry Herzek Jan 2008

Man In The Age Of Mechanical Reproduction, Charles Barry Herzek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Science fiction identifies three characteristics as definitive of and essential to humanity: 1) sentience or self-awareness, 2) emotions, and 3) most importantly, the capacity for sociability. Through the vital possession of these three traits any entity can come to be called human. In the first chapter, I examine Cordwainer Smith's "Scanners Live in Vain" and Samuel R. Delany's "Aye and Gomorrah...," two stories in which human subjects become Other than human. In the second chapter, I explore the prospect of creatures, not biologically human who gain human status through an analysis of Smith's "The Dead Lady of Clown Town" and …

Limiting Interpretive Possibilities In Beckett And Calvina, Paul Ardoin Jan 2008

Limiting Interpretive Possibilities In Beckett And Calvina, Paul Ardoin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Advances in literary studies have expanded the multitude of interpretations possible of a single work, perhaps too far. Positive progress from here requires constructing a way to avoid the chaos of an interpretive free- for-all without reverting to the debunked, totali zing systems of old. Limiting Interpretive Possibilities finds in Italo Calvina's If on a winter's night a traveler and Samuel Beckett's Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable the model for a combinatorial literature that respects the key, inalienable elements of author, reader, work, and universe. Any reading that fits into this framework is a "possible" interpretation of the work, …

La Transformacion De Ia Bruja En Las Obras De Maria De Zayas, Elizabeth Marie Petersen Jan 2008

La Transformacion De Ia Bruja En Las Obras De Maria De Zayas, Elizabeth Marie Petersen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In my thesis, I argue that the 1 ih -century Spanish writer, Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor, in a unique form of 'mimesis,' uses elements of magic to transform the popular concept of the Spanish witch. Drawing on theories from Jacques Lacan's mirror phase, Homi Bhabha and Barbara Fuchs's notion of mimesis, and Judith Butler's idea of gender performitivity, I demonstrate how Zayas frees the witch from the subjugated language constructed by the Catholic Church and society of her time. I examine six of the short stories in her two novels to show how the author alters the role of …

Micropolitics Of Transition In Yugoslavia, Martin Y. Marinos Jan 2008

Micropolitics Of Transition In Yugoslavia, Martin Y. Marinos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The thesis provides a cultural analysis on the micropolitics of Yugoslavia wars in 1992-1995, examining local and global media coverage along with grassroots and historical dimensions. The study offers an extensive overview of scholarly literature on the Balkans, arguing that often omitted local, cultural and historical narratives of the war events reveal complex perspectives on the rationales provided on civil war. Investigating the nationalist social movements in Yugoslavia (1992-1995), the thesis articulates the need to revisit Deleuze and Guattari's framework of micropolitics to understand the cultural and historical dimensions operational in such movements. The study presents local media coverage in …

Low Complexity H.264 Video Encoder Design Using Machine Learning Techniques, Paula. Carrillo Jan 2008

Low Complexity H.264 Video Encoder Design Using Machine Learning Techniques, Paula. Carrillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

H.264/AVC encoder complexity is mainly due to variable size in Intra and Inter frames. This makes H.264/AVC very difficult to implement, especially for real time applications and mobile devices. The current technological challenge is to conserve the compression capacity and quality that H.264 offers but reduce the encoding time and, therefore, the processing complexity. This thesis applies machine learning technique for video encoding mode decisions and investigates ways to improve the process of generating more general low complexity H.264/AVC video encoders. The proposed H.264 encoding method decreases the complexity in the mode decision inside the Inter frames. Results show, at …

This study of 91 dyads investigated concurrent and prospective bidirectional associations between friendship quality and psychosocial adjustment in young adolescents, using multiple-group structural equation modeling to detect gender differences. Friend reports ofboth positive (social support) and negative features of friendship, self-reports of two adjustment variables (internalizing problems and externalizing problems), and self-reports of three dimensions of self-esteem (global selfworth, behavioral conduct esteem, and close friendship esteem) were examined at two time periods approximately one year apart. Principal findings were that grade 6 friendship negativity was inversely associated with grade 7 self-esteem, and positively associated with grade 7 internalizing problems and …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Neuroprotection In The Anoxia Tolerant Freshwater Turtle, Shailaja. Kesaraju Jan 2008

Molecular Mechanisms Of Neuroprotection In The Anoxia Tolerant Freshwater Turtle, Shailaja. Kesaraju

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Cardiac ischemia, stroke and some neurodegenerative disorders are all characterized by cell damage and death due to low oxygen levels. Comparative studies show that anoxia tolerant model systems present a unique opportunity to study "survival" instead of death in the complete absence of oxygen. The freshwater turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) is unique in its ability to survive total oxygen deprivation for hours to days, as well as reoxygenation insult after anoxia. The broad objective of this study is to understand the modulation of key molecular mechanisms involving stress proteins and VEGF that offer neuroprotection and enhance cell survival in the …

Mind The Gap: Overcoming Dualities In Motor City, Usa, Tai Lynden Houser Jan 2008

Mind The Gap: Overcoming Dualities In Motor City, Usa, Tai Lynden Houser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Contemporary thinking, bound as it is to a dualistic paradigm, inherently privileges one side of the duality over the other. Feminists - most notably in this dissertation, Val Plumwood - argue that we must overcome these privileged dualities and reconstruct a way of knowing that recognizes difference while not granting privilege to one side or the other. Dualities result from the modernist and postmodernist desire to name and control. One of the reasons that we cannot transcend this desire is because we have lost our connection to our environment. Examining novels and films set in Detroit, Michigan, as well as …

Mechanisms Of Protection Against Ischemic Damage In The Heart, Ian Moench Jan 2008

Mechanisms Of Protection Against Ischemic Damage In The Heart, Ian Moench

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Heart disease including ischemic heart disease is the highest contributor to death and morbidity in the western world. The studies presented were conducted to determine possible pathways of protection of the heart against ischemia/reperfusion. We employed adenovirus mediated over-expression of Methionine sulfoxide reductase A (MsrA) in primary neonatal rat cardiac myocytes to determine the effect of this enzyme in protecting against hypoxia/reoxygenation. Cells transfected with MsrA encoding adenovirus and subjected to hypoxia/reoxygenation exhibited a 45% decrease in apoptosis as compared to controls. Likewise total cell death as determined by levels of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) release was dramatically decreased by MsrA …

Mobile Modernity: Transportation In The Works Of F. Scott Fitzgerald And Ernest Hemingway, Carrie E. Johnston Jan 2008

Mobile Modernity: Transportation In The Works Of F. Scott Fitzgerald And Ernest Hemingway, Carrie E. Johnston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A central paradox in modernism is its disdain for mass culture, despite mass culture 's undeniable presence in modernist literature. American authors writing during the early twentieth century tried to establish themselves as "highbrow" by leaving the U.S. and traveling to Europe. In doing so, they created a particular aesthetic characterized by depictions of the transportation that facilitated this travel. These depictions reveal modernism's dependence on mass culture, and more importantly, create a space in which modernist authors can negotiate what was once a choice between high or low culture, exile or tourist, and ultimately, modernism or mass culture. Analyzing …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The chroniclers who accompanied Lope de Aguirre on his expedition to find "EI Dorado," accuse him of being a "crazy" tyrant, responsible for the rebellion to emancipate the conquerors from the Spanish crown. Aguirre was made a scapegoat, in Girard ian terms, not only for that reason but due to his critique of what Angel Rama defined as the "Lettered City," a rebuke voiced in the infamous letter he wrote to the Spanish king denouncing imperial institutions in the Americas. 20th century, Spanish writer Ramon J. Sender's novel, La aventura equinoccial de Lope de Aguirre (1964), reverses the historical discourse …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In this dissertation the synthesis, characterization, and binding properties of carbohydrate receptors 34-38 was described. Macrocyclic receptor 34 and macrobicyclic receptor 35 bind monosaccharides in aqueous media through combination of hydrophobic, electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions. The dissociation constants (Kd) for the complexes between 1 ,8-naphthyridine receptors 34, and 35 with a variety of neutral and negatively charged monosaccharides in aqueous media were determined by fluorimetric and UV /vis titration. The observed values are in the range from ~0.3 to >10 mM, within the Kd range reported for lectin/monosaccharide complexes. However, among monosaccharide substrates tested receptor 34 showed the strongest …
