Longitudinal Change In Friendship Quality And Adolescent, Donna Marion Jan 2008

Longitudinal Change In Friendship Quality And Adolescent, Donna Marion

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study of 91 dyads investigated concurrent and prospective bidirectional associations between friendship quality and psychosocial adjustment in young adolescents, using multiple-group structural equation modeling to detect gender differences. Friend reports ofboth positive (social support) and negative features of friendship, self-reports of two adjustment variables (internalizing problems and externalizing problems), and self-reports of three dimensions of self-esteem (global selfworth, behavioral conduct esteem, and close friendship esteem) were examined at two time periods approximately one year apart. Principal findings were that grade 6 friendship negativity was inversely associated with grade 7 self-esteem, and positively associated with grade 7 internalizing problems and …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Neuroprotection In The Anoxia Tolerant Freshwater Turtle, Shailaja. Kesaraju Jan 2008

Molecular Mechanisms Of Neuroprotection In The Anoxia Tolerant Freshwater Turtle, Shailaja. Kesaraju

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Cardiac ischemia, stroke and some neurodegenerative disorders are all characterized by cell damage and death due to low oxygen levels. Comparative studies show that anoxia tolerant model systems present a unique opportunity to study "survival" instead of death in the complete absence of oxygen. The freshwater turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) is unique in its ability to survive total oxygen deprivation for hours to days, as well as reoxygenation insult after anoxia. The broad objective of this study is to understand the modulation of key molecular mechanisms involving stress proteins and VEGF that offer neuroprotection and enhance cell survival in the …

Mind The Gap: Overcoming Dualities In Motor City, Usa, Tai Lynden Houser Jan 2008

Mind The Gap: Overcoming Dualities In Motor City, Usa, Tai Lynden Houser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Contemporary thinking, bound as it is to a dualistic paradigm, inherently privileges one side of the duality over the other. Feminists - most notably in this dissertation, Val Plumwood - argue that we must overcome these privileged dualities and reconstruct a way of knowing that recognizes difference while not granting privilege to one side or the other. Dualities result from the modernist and postmodernist desire to name and control. One of the reasons that we cannot transcend this desire is because we have lost our connection to our environment. Examining novels and films set in Detroit, Michigan, as well as …

Mechanisms Of Protection Against Ischemic Damage In The Heart, Ian Moench Jan 2008

Mechanisms Of Protection Against Ischemic Damage In The Heart, Ian Moench

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Heart disease including ischemic heart disease is the highest contributor to death and morbidity in the western world. The studies presented were conducted to determine possible pathways of protection of the heart against ischemia/reperfusion. We employed adenovirus mediated over-expression of Methionine sulfoxide reductase A (MsrA) in primary neonatal rat cardiac myocytes to determine the effect of this enzyme in protecting against hypoxia/reoxygenation. Cells transfected with MsrA encoding adenovirus and subjected to hypoxia/reoxygenation exhibited a 45% decrease in apoptosis as compared to controls. Likewise total cell death as determined by levels of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) release was dramatically decreased by MsrA …

Mobile Modernity: Transportation In The Works Of F. Scott Fitzgerald And Ernest Hemingway, Carrie E. Johnston Jan 2008

Mobile Modernity: Transportation In The Works Of F. Scott Fitzgerald And Ernest Hemingway, Carrie E. Johnston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A central paradox in modernism is its disdain for mass culture, despite mass culture 's undeniable presence in modernist literature. American authors writing during the early twentieth century tried to establish themselves as "highbrow" by leaving the U.S. and traveling to Europe. In doing so, they created a particular aesthetic characterized by depictions of the transportation that facilitated this travel. These depictions reveal modernism's dependence on mass culture, and more importantly, create a space in which modernist authors can negotiate what was once a choice between high or low culture, exile or tourist, and ultimately, modernism or mass culture. Analyzing …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The chroniclers who accompanied Lope de Aguirre on his expedition to find "EI Dorado," accuse him of being a "crazy" tyrant, responsible for the rebellion to emancipate the conquerors from the Spanish crown. Aguirre was made a scapegoat, in Girard ian terms, not only for that reason but due to his critique of what Angel Rama defined as the "Lettered City," a rebuke voiced in the infamous letter he wrote to the Spanish king denouncing imperial institutions in the Americas. 20th century, Spanish writer Ramon J. Sender's novel, La aventura equinoccial de Lope de Aguirre (1964), reverses the historical discourse …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In this dissertation the synthesis, characterization, and binding properties of carbohydrate receptors 34-38 was described. Macrocyclic receptor 34 and macrobicyclic receptor 35 bind monosaccharides in aqueous media through combination of hydrophobic, electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions. The dissociation constants (Kd) for the complexes between 1 ,8-naphthyridine receptors 34, and 35 with a variety of neutral and negatively charged monosaccharides in aqueous media were determined by fluorimetric and UV /vis titration. The observed values are in the range from ~0.3 to >10 mM, within the Kd range reported for lectin/monosaccharide complexes. However, among monosaccharide substrates tested receptor 34 showed the strongest …

A Longitudinal Investigation Offriendship Similarity: Selection And Socialization In Adolescent Behavior, Christopher A. Hafen Jan 2008

A Longitudinal Investigation Offriendship Similarity: Selection And Socialization In Adolescent Behavior, Christopher A. Hafen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The current study examined the homophilic processes of selection and socialization in same-sex adolescent friendships across a 3-year period. The framework of the actor-partner interdependence model for distinguishable dyads was the main analytic technique, an improvement over previous analysis methods which often did not allow for simultaneous exploration of selection and socialization. Within the friendships, adolescents were distinguished based on their general peer acceptance levels, and similarity was assessed for three behaviors: deviant behavior, depression, and achievement motivation. Results showed evidence of both selection and socialization for deviant behavior and achievement motivation, but not for depression. Furthermore, partner influence paths …

Algebraic And Combinatorial Aspects Of Group Factorizations, Vladimir. Bozovic Jan 2008

Algebraic And Combinatorial Aspects Of Group Factorizations, Vladimir. Bozovic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The aim of this work is to investigate some algebraic and combinatorial aspects of group factorizations. The main contribution of this dissertation is a set of new results regarding factorization of groups, with emphasis on the nonabelian case. We introduce a novel technique for factorization of groups, the so-called free mappings, a powerful tool for factorization of a wide class of abelian and non-abelian groups. By applying a certain group action on the blocks of a factorization, a number of combinatorial and computational problems were noted and studied. In particular, we analyze the case of the group Aut(Zn) acting on …

American Responses To Israeli Foreign Policy Initiatives, Rebekah. Israel Jan 2008

American Responses To Israeli Foreign Policy Initiatives, Rebekah. Israel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The origin of the United States-Israeli relationship can be found in President Harry S. Truman's support for the new state of Israel on May 14, 1948. While support to Israel has varied during Presidential administrations from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George W. Bush, strategic interests have steadily defined the nation's responses to Israel. In order to measure U.S. reaction to Israel, this study conducted a content analysis on U.S. statements published in the New York Times following four Israeli military initiatives: the 1967 Six-Day War, the 1976 Raid on Entebbe, the 1981 Raid on Osirak, and the 2006 Lebanon War. …

Age Of William A. Dunning, Kathleen P. Barsalou Jan 2008

Age Of William A. Dunning, Kathleen P. Barsalou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Stripped of the intent of its author, L. Frank Baum, the children's fairy tale The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was left to be understood only within a changing cultural construct. Historian Hayden White, arguing that the similarities between a novel and a work of history were more significant than their differences, insisted that history was preeminently a subsection of literature. According to White, historical narratives were manifestly verbal fictions, and the only acceptable grounds upon which the historian should choose his historical perspective were the moral and the aesthetic. White conflated historical consciousness with myth and blurred the boundary that …

An Alternative Enlightenment: The Moral Philosophy Of Jeanne Marie Le Prince De Beaumont (1711-1780), Margaret P. Schaller Jan 2008

An Alternative Enlightenment: The Moral Philosophy Of Jeanne Marie Le Prince De Beaumont (1711-1780), Margaret P. Schaller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The ceuvre of Jeanne Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, the public intellectual whose pedagogical journals and epistolary novels were routinely shelved in private eighteenthcentury libraries alongside the works of the period's most famous philosophes, today remains virtually unknown. Beyond the scant available studies limited to her pedagogy and fairy tales, it is time to explore the theoretical aspects of those and other of her texts as significant alternatives to traditional Enlightenment discourse as epitomized in the contemporary philosophes. Through her personal roles of governess to British and French aristocracy, editor of a French-language periodical featuring such contributors as Voltaire and …

It examines how factors such as social conservatism, party ideology, war, sanctions, religion, and international pressure during different periods in Iraq's modern history influenced changes in Iraqi women's roles and participation over time. These changes in …

Antecedents And Consequences Of Pay Disparity Between Ceo And Non-Ceo Executives, Seema. Pissaris Jan 2008

Antecedents And Consequences Of Pay Disparity Between Ceo And Non-Ceo Executives, Seema. Pissaris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation investigates the antecedents and consequences to pay disparity between the CEO and non-CEO executives from an equity-based perspective. While the principles of agency theory suggest that CEOs are granted higher compensation packages to better align their motives to those of the firm's shareholders, empirical research has not supported a positive relationship between rising CEO pay and firm performance. Some results even suggest a negative relationship. This dissertation argues that if organizational outcomes are determined by the integrated skills and talents of its dominant coalition, and if the management of a firm's trajectory is a shared process, then, the …

Analysis Of Voluntary Annual Report Disclosures Of Outsourcing, Ronald F. Premuroso Jan 2008

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Outsourcing has become a significant factor in the U.S. economy over the past two decades. Annual report disclosures made by a firm related to outsourcing are voluntary disclosures. Understanding the determinants and firm performance implications of initial outsourcing annual report disclosures is important to capital market providers, standards developers, and to the firms themselves. I identify and study firms making initial voluntary disclosures of outsourcing in their annual reports on Form 10-K between 1993 and 2003 after they make non-annual report related public disclosures. Specifically, I investigate if determinants of the initial annual report disclosure decision and subsequent performance are …
