Musical Actions Of Dihedral Groups, Alissa S. Crans, Thomas M. Fiore, Ramon Satyendra Jan 2008

Musical Actions Of Dihedral Groups, Alissa S. Crans, Thomas M. Fiore, Ramon Satyendra

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

The sequence of pitches which form a musical melody can be transposed or inverted. Since the 1970s, music theorists have modeled musical transposition and inversion in terms of an action of the dihedral group of order 24. More recently music theorists have found an intriguing second way that the dihedral group of order 24 acts on the set of major and minor chords. We illustrate both geometrically and algebraically how these two actions are {\it dual}. Both actions and their duality have been used to analyze works of music as diverse as Hindemith and the Beatles.

Value Monoids Of Zero-Dimensional Valuations Of Rank 1, Edward Mosteig Jan 2008

Value Monoids Of Zero-Dimensional Valuations Of Rank 1, Edward Mosteig

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

Classically, Grobner bases are computed by first prescribing a set monomial order. Moss Sweedler suggested an alternative and developed a framework to perform such computations by using valuation rings in place of monomial orders. We build on these ideas by providing a class of valuations on k(x, y) that are suitable for this framework. For these valuations, we compute ν(k[x, y] ∗ ) and use this to perform computations concerning ideals in the polynomial ring k[x, y]. Interestingly, for these valuations, some ideals have a finite Grobner basis with respect to the valuation that is not …

Cohomology Of Categorical Self-Distributivity, J. Scott Carter, Alissa S. Crans, Mohamed Elhamdadi, Masahico Saito Jan 2008

Cohomology Of Categorical Self-Distributivity, J. Scott Carter, Alissa S. Crans, Mohamed Elhamdadi, Masahico Saito

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We define self-distributive structures in the categories of coalgebras and cocommutative coalgebras. We obtain examples from vector spaces whose bases are the elements of finite quandles, the direct sum of a Lie algebra with its ground field, and Hopf algebras. The self-distributive operations of these structures provide solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation, and, conversely, solutions of the Yang–Baxter equation can be used to construct self-distributive operations in certain categories. Moreover, we present a cohomology theory that encompasses both Lie algebra and quandle cohomologies, is analogous to Hochschild cohomology, and can be used to study deformations of these self-distributive structures. All …

Four Varieties Of Character-Based Virtue Epistemology, Jason Baehr Jan 2008

Four Varieties Of Character-Based Virtue Epistemology, Jason Baehr

Philosophy Faculty Works

The terrain of character-based or “responsibilist” virtue epistemology has evolved dramatically over the last decade — so much so that it is far from clear what, if anything, unifies the various views put forth in this area. In an attempt to bring some clarity to the overall thrust and structure of this movement, I develop a fourfold classification of character-based virtue epistemologies. I also offer a qualified assessment of each approach, defending a certain account of the probable future of this burgeoning subfield.

Sacrifice And Sustainability, Christopher Key Chapple Jan 2008

Sacrifice And Sustainability, Christopher Key Chapple

Theological Studies Faculty Works

Sacrifice in the Jewish, Hellenistic, and Christian traditions involves a giving up, a surrendering of something for the sake of a greater good. Sacrifice in times past took the form of a bloody offering. In Christianity this has been replaced with the Eucharist, which promotes human conscience and adherence to a moral code. Sacrifice in the ancient Vedic traditions of India entailed the offering of an animal or the symbolic offering of a human being that correlated bodily parts to functions of society and the cosmos. Sacrifice in India in rare instances still includes the killing of animals. Ritual throughout …

Do Firms Have Short Memories? Evidence From Major League Baseball, Andrew Healy Jan 2008

Do Firms Have Short Memories? Evidence From Major League Baseball, Andrew Healy

Economics Faculty Works

When deciding what salary to offer an employee, a firm needs to predict that employee’s future productivity. One piece of information that a firm can use to predict productivity is the employee’s past performance record. Classical theory predicts that firms will effectively use the available information to choose an appropriate salary offer. Evidence from baseball contracts indicates, however, that memory-based biases influence salary offers. Consistent with insights from psychology and behavioral economics, salaries are affected too much by recent performance compared with past performance. All organizations do not suffer equally from short memories. The teams that achieve the most with …

The Moral High Ground: An Experimental Study Of Spectator Impartiality, James Konow Jan 2008

The Moral High Ground: An Experimental Study Of Spectator Impartiality, James Konow

Economics Faculty Works

This paper proposes and tests an empirical model of impartiality, inspired by Adam Smith (1759), that is based on the moral judgments of informed third parties (or spectators). The model predicts that spectatorship produces properties widely considered desirable in both the normative and descriptive literature of philosophy and the social sciences, namely, unbiasedness and consensus. This informs a vignette experiment that elicits moral judgments about real world policy issues while varying the information conditions (relevant and irrelevant information) and roles (spectator and stakeholder) of respondents across treatments. The results indicate that spectator views are unbiased, and that relevant information reduces …

Food, Drugs, And Droods: A Historical Consideration Of Definitions And Categories In American Food And Drug Law, Lewis Grossman Jan 2008

Food, Drugs, And Droods: A Historical Consideration Of Definitions And Categories In American Food And Drug Law, Lewis Grossman

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article explores the development and interaction of the legal and cultural categories food and drug from the late nineteenth century to the present. It is based not only on legal and historical research, but also on theories of category formation from the fields of linguistics and psychology. The scope of the Food and Drug Administration's power is defined primarily by the list of product categories over which it has jurisdiction. The statutory definitions of these categories (food, drug, cosmetic, device, and human biological product) thus delineate the outer boundaries of the arena within which the agency operates. The definitions …

Users As Innovators: Implications For Patent Doctrine, Katherine J. Strandburg Jan 2008

Users As Innovators: Implications For Patent Doctrine, Katherine J. Strandburg

University of Colorado Law Review

User innovators range from commercial firms, which invent new production methods in expectation of competitive advantage, to individual hobbyists motivated entirely by their enjoyment of the inventive process. In this Article, I consider the implications for patent doctrine of the fact that many user innovators derive sufficient benefit simply from developing and using their inventions to motivate them to invest the effort necessary to invent them. Moreover, user innovators often benefit from "freely revealing" their innovations to others. Trade secrecy and patenting are not central to motivating this inventive activity. This picture of user innovation contrasts sharply with the seller …

The Vast Injustice Perpetuated By State And Local Tax Policy, Susan Pace Hamill Jan 2008

The Vast Injustice Perpetuated By State And Local Tax Policy, Susan Pace Hamill

Articles

State and local tax policy is one of the most important areas of public policy affecting the lives of the most powerless and vulnerable segments of the population children from low income families Focusing on the funding of primary and secondary education especially in high poverty school districts and the scheme for allocating the tax burden this article empirically proves that all fifty states have unjust state and local tax policy with thirtyone states inflicting an extreme level of injustice on poor children and their families This article argues that the people in most states as well as their political …

Quasiclassical Description Of Bremsstrahlung Accompanying Α Decay Including Quadrupole Radiation, Ulrich D. Jentschura, A. I. Milstein, Ivan S. Terekhov, H. Boie, Heiko Scheit, Dirk Schwalm

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a quasiclassical theory of α decay accompanied by bremsstrahlung with a special emphasis on the case of 210Po, with the aim of finding a unified description that incorporates both the radiation during the tunneling through the Coulomb wall and the finite energy Eγ of the radiated photon up to Eγ~Qα | √/η, where Qα is the α-decay Q-value and η is the Sommerfeld parameter. The corrections with respect to previous quasiclassical investigations are found to be substantial, and excellent agreement with a full quantum mechanical treatment is achieved. Furthermore, we find that …

Geochemical Analysis Of Ironstone Preserved Molluscan Fossils Of The Hell Creek Formation (Cretaceous) And Ludlow Member Of The Fort Union Formation (Paleogene) Of Southwestern North Dakota, Tanya P. Justham Jan 2008

Geochemical Analysis Of Ironstone Preserved Molluscan Fossils Of The Hell Creek Formation (Cretaceous) And Ludlow Member Of The Fort Union Formation (Paleogene) Of Southwestern North Dakota, Tanya P. Justham

Theses and Dissertations

The uppermost Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation and Paleocene Ludlow Member of the Fort Union Formation in easternmost Montana and western North Dakota produce ironstone preserved freshwater molluscan fossils. Ironstone preserved mollusks are associated with ironstone nodules, which have been described as composed of iron carbonate, iron oxide, or manganese oxide by various researchers. To date, the exact composition of the ironstone preservation has not been satisfactorily determined to allow agreement between researchers. Freshwater mollusk fossils, preserved as ironstone external casts, molds, and steinkerns, tend to be highly weathered. The poor preservation of the fossils has resulted in little professional interest, …

Experiences Of Mature Age Female Students Studying Psychology: A Phenomenological Account, Ruth Ayres, Andrew Guilfoyle Jan 2008

Experiences Of Mature Age Female Students Studying Psychology: A Phenomenological Account, Ruth Ayres, Andrew Guilfoyle

EDU-COM International Conference

Australian Government policies have increased accessibility of under-represented groups into Universities, and one significant group in this shift is mature aged women (Department of Education, Science and Training 2004). University policy related to provision of support for nontraditional groups of students, through improved academic and support services is beneficial in improving student retention rates among non-traditional student groups (Krause et al. 2005). The present paper reports a phenomenological approach (Moustakas 1994; Smith & Osborn 2003) to understanding how expectations of higher education impacts on adjustment to study within lived experiences of 12 women aged between 40-49 years studying Psychology. Each …

E-Learning Methods As A Driver For The Internationalisation Of Web Development Courses, Justin Brown Jan 2008

E-Learning Methods As A Driver For The Internationalisation Of Web Development Courses, Justin Brown

EDU-COM International Conference

Over the past decade, as software development has moved from a platform specific, desktop based software approach to a web focused environment, the ability to develop courses for wider delivery has increased. At the same time university courses have undergone major changes in teaching mode, with an expectation that online versions of teaching materials should be delivered as readily and to the same quality as in-class materials. This paper examines how the re-development of course materials to support online (off-campus) students as well as on campus students provides an opportunity to deliver those same materials to overseas partners. This is …

The Introduction Of A 'Learning In The Workplace' Component For An Undergraduate It Program And Its Impact On Professional Accreditation, Grace Tan, Anne Venables

EDU-COM International Conference

A new learning in the workplace and community policy (LiWC) at Victoria University has been introduced to ensure that graduates are job and career ready. The policy mandates that all programs incorporate at least a 25% workplace contextual learning component by 2010. For the IT undergraduate program, compliance with this policy poses a number of significant challenges, not least of which is the meeting of professional accreditation criteria. Acquiring a recognized professional body accreditation, like that of the Australian Computer Society (ACS), is pivotal for all IT Australian programs, in that, it is a vital quality assurance measure and it …

Acs Accreditation: What‟S In The Name?, Grace Tan

EDU-COM International Conference

In Australia, all higher education Information and Communications Technology (ICT) programs seek accreditation at the professional level with the Australian Computer Society (ACS). It acts as the basis for national and international benchmarking of ICT professional education. Additionally, meeting the requirements of an independent professional body is vital for onshore and offshore course marketing purposes, hence contributing towards the University‘s performance portfolio. The overriding task of the ACS accreditation is to examine all aspects in the provision of a quality ICT education program designed to produce competent graduates. To this end, the ACS seeks evidence that comprehensively covers the three …
