Kyoto Comes To Georgia: How International Environmental Initiatives Foster Sustainable Commerce In Small Town America, Peter A. Appel, T. Rick Irvin, Julie M. Mcentire, J. Chris Rabon

Scholarly Works

This Article posits that in response to adoption of Kyoto Protocol targets by governments and multi-national corporations overseas that comprise significant portions of the global economy as well as global financial markets, businesses and state and local governments in the U.S. are also being driven by necessity to undertake sustainable commerce initiatives. Businesses in the EU and other Kyoto-compliant regions that have implemented sustainable commerce programs now require overseas vendors and suppliers-including those in the U.S.-to implement their own sustainable commerce initiatives as a condition of approved supplier status. New EU environmental regulations developed in part to meet Kyoto-specified emissions …

Enhancing Domain Wall Speed In Nanowires With Transverse Magnetic Fields, Andrew Kunz, Sarah C. Reiff Jan 2008

Enhancing Domain Wall Speed In Nanowires With Transverse Magnetic Fields, Andrew Kunz, Sarah C. Reiff

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

Dynamic micromagnetic simulation studies have been completed to observe the motion of a domain wall in a magnetic nanowire in an effort to increase the field-driven domain wall speed. Previous studies have shown that the wire dimensions place a cap on the maximum speed attainable by a domain wall when driven by a magnetic field placed along the direction of the nanowire. Here we present data showing a significant increase in the maximum speed of a domain wall due to the addition of a magnetic field placed perpendicular to the longitudinal driving field. The results are expressed in terms of …

Beyond The Torrens Mirror: A Framework Of The In Personam Exception To Indefeasibility, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

One of the central tenets of the Torrens system is that the registered proprietor is conferred indefeasible title. Indefeasibility of title is subject to cm in personam exception. The content of the in personam exception to indefensibility has been a source of debute in many Torrens jurisdictions. The purpose of this article is to map out a theoretical structure to analyse the ambit of the in personam exception so as to provide a principled development of the law in this area. This article will also attempt to explain how this proposed theoretical structure of the in personam exception deals with …

Multigrid Convergence For Second Order Elliptic Problems With Smooth Complex Coefficients, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak Jan 2008

Multigrid Convergence For Second Order Elliptic Problems With Smooth Complex Coefficients, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The finite element method when applied to a second order partial differential equation in divergence form can generate operators that are neither Hermitian nor definite when the coefficient function is complex valued. For such problems, under a uniqueness assumption, we prove the continuous dependence of the exact solution and its finite element approximations on data provided that the coefficients are smooth and uniformly bounded away from zero. Then we show that a multigrid algorithm converges once the coarse mesh size is smaller than some fixed number, providing an efficient solver for computing discrete approximations. Numerical experiments, while confirming the theory, …

Polynomial Extension Operators. Part I, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joachim Schöberl Jan 2008

Polynomial Extension Operators. Part I, Leszek Demkowicz, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joachim Schöberl

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this series of papers, we construct operators that extend certain given functions on the boundary of a tetrahedron into the interior of the tetrahedron, with continuity properties in appropriate Sobolev norms. These extensions are novel in that they have certain polynomial preservation properties important in the analysis of high order finite elements. This part of the series is devoted to introducing our new technique for constructing the extensions, and its application to the case of polynomial extensions from H½(∂K) into H¹(K), for any tetrahedron K.

A Mixed Method For Axisymmetric Div-Curl Systems, Dylan M. Copeland, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak Jan 2008

A Mixed Method For Axisymmetric Div-Curl Systems, Dylan M. Copeland, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Joseph E. Pasciak

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a mixed method for a three-dimensional axisymmetric div-curl system reduced to a two-dimensional computational domain via cylindrical coordinates. We show that when the meridian axisymmetric Maxwell problem is approximated by a mixed method using the lowest order Nédélec elements (for the vector variable) and linear elements (for the Lagrange multiplier), one obtains optimal error estimates in certain weighted Sobolev norms. The main ingredient of the analysis is a sequence of projectors in the weighted norms satisfying some commutativity properties.

The Indefinite Metric Of R. Mrugala And The Geometry Of The Thermodynamical Phase Space, Serge Preston, James Vargo Jan 2008

The Indefinite Metric Of R. Mrugala And The Geometry Of The Thermodynamical Phase Space, Serge Preston, James Vargo

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study an indefinite metric G which was introduced by R. Mrugala and is defined on the contact phase space (P, θ) of a homogeneous thermodynamical system. We describe the curvature properties and the isometry group of the metric G. We established an isomorphism of the space (P, θ, G) with the Heisenberg Lie group Hn, endowed with the right invariant contact structure and the right invariant indefinite metric. The lift of the metric G to the symplectization of contact space (P, θ) and its properties are studied. Finally we introduce the "hyperbolic projectivization" of the space …

Uniform Materials And The Multiplicative Decomposition Of The Deformation Gradient In Finite Elasto-Plasticity, Vincenzo Ciancio, Marina Dolfin, Mauro Francaviglia, Serge Preston Jan 2008

Uniform Materials And The Multiplicative Decomposition Of The Deformation Gradient In Finite Elasto-Plasticity, Vincenzo Ciancio, Marina Dolfin, Mauro Francaviglia, Serge Preston

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this work we analyze the relation between the multiplicative decomposition F = F e F p of the deformation gradient as a product of the elastic and plastic factors and the theory of uniform materials. We prove that postulating such a decomposition is equivalent to having a uniform material model with two configurations – total φ and the inelastic φ1. We introduce strain tensors characterizing different types of evolutions of the material and discuss the form of the internal energy and that of the dissipative potential. The evolution equations are obtained for the configurations (φ, φ1) and the material …

Researchers of mathematics education are increasingly interested in a teacher's discursive moves, which refer to deliberate actions taken by a teacher to participate in or influence debate and discussion in the mathematics classroom. This study explored one teacher's discursive moves in an undergraduate inquiry-oriented mathematics class. The data for this study come from four class sessions in which students investigated initial value problems as represented by the phase portrait of a system of differential equations. Through the analysis and a review of the literature, we identified four categories of a teacher's discursive moves: revoicing, questioning/requesting, telling, and managing. This report …

Muted Group Theory And U.S. Politics: Examining Third Parties And Their Supporters., Meredith A. Mitchell Jan 2008

Muted Group Theory And U.S. Politics: Examining Third Parties And Their Supporters., Meredith A. Mitchell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With many more young adult voters identifying themselves as independent voters or members of a third party, it is hard to believe third party candidates have not found more significant or lasting success in the U.S. politics. To investigate this phenomenon, Muted Group Theory is presented as one explanation and evidence was sought to determine if third party supporters are a muted group in U.S. politics. Participants included young adult voters from a large Mid-Atlantic university who responded to several statements about third parties and identified their political affiliation. Differences were expected to exist among the different political groups, yet …

Baby Signs: Caregiver Perceptions Of Their Use And Benefit To Children, Leah Catherine Legere Jan 2008

Baby Signs: Caregiver Perceptions Of Their Use And Benefit To Children, Leah Catherine Legere

LSU Master's Theses

Gesture use is a precursor to spoken language, and children who exhibit frequent use of gesture have higher rates of speech comprehension and production when tested between 13 and 15 months of age (Bates et al, 1989). The purpose of this study was to learn more about caregivers’ perceptions of the use and benefits of sign to their children. Fifty-three caregivers were recruited for the study, and 33 (62%) of these caregivers reported that they had used or were currently using baby signs with one of their children. Six (18%) of these caregivers also reported that their children presented developmental …

Durable And Reusable Antimicrobial Textiles, Leila Elizabeth Bonin Jan 2008

Durable And Reusable Antimicrobial Textiles, Leila Elizabeth Bonin

LSU Master's Theses

Antimicrobial textiles are a large research focus in the textile industry. There is an apparent need for creating reusable and durable antimicrobial textiles. Most of the textiles with antimicrobial properties effective against Staphylococcus aureus are disposable. To address the issue, two types of biopolymer solutions were created in a USDA lab. Both solutions displayed antimicrobial properties. A medium weight, plain weave cotton sheeting was used as the test fabric. Samples of the sheeting were cut, treated, and tested to determine their efficacy as antimicrobial textiles. The tests performed included tensile deformation, bending, shearing, compression, surface friction, surface roughness, and treatment …

Neuronal Regeneration In Denervated Muscle Following Sensory And Muscular Neurotization, Shahryar Noordin, Mahmood Ahmed, Rasham Rehman, Tashfeen Ahmad, Pervaiz Hashmi

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Background and Purpose: Neurotization of denervated muscles has been shown to improve muscle bulk, but the neuronal regeneration response has not been compared previously in different surgical techniques of neurotization. Thus, using a rat model of experimental skeletal muscle denervation, we studied neuronal regeneration following sensory neurotization by two methods: sensory nerve to motor branch of muscle and direct sensory nerve implantation to muscle.
Material and Methods: The lateral head of the gas-trocnemius muscle was denervated in 36 rats, of which the first 12 served as denervated controls. In the second group of 12, the sural nerve was anastomozed to …

An Outcomes Assessment Of Two Therapeutic Group Homes Serving Children With Reactive Attachment Disorder In A Rural Community, Brooke Rose Spangler

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Archival data collected on 35 4-12-year-old children, each of whom completed treatment for reactive attachment disorder (RAD), was used to evaluate a treatment program in a rural northwestern community. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) (Achenbach, 1991) and Youth Outcomes Questionnaire (Y-OQ) (Burlingame, Wells, & Lambert, 1996) were completed by coding behaviors early in treatment and late in treatment from behavioral records. A correlational design was used, and t-test, repeated measures and fixed factor analyses of variance were conducted. Results showed that there was an overall decrease in the amount of maladaptive behaviors at the conclusion of residential treatment for attachment …

Balancing Competing Interests In Bankruptcy: Discharge By Certificate Of The Official Assignee In Singapore, S. Chandra Mohan Jan 2008

Balancing Competing Interests In Bankruptcy: Discharge By Certificate Of The Official Assignee In Singapore, S. Chandra Mohan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

After more than a hundred years, Singapore made major reforms to its bankruptcy laws in 1995. These changes attracted considerable public interest, with the Government taking pains to emphasise that the new law was designed to strike a balance between the interest of the debtor, the creditor and society. The greatest scrutiny of the provisions, to determine whether in law and in practice the competing interests of debtors and creditors could effectively be balanced, was in respect of the discharge provisions. In this article, the writer, who was then the Official Assignee, discusses how the novel remedy of discharge by …

Pre-Commencement Discovery And The Odex Litigation: Copyright Versus Confidentiality Or Is It Privacy?, Sze Shun, George Wei

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article examines whether internet service providers are under any duty to disclose the names of subscribers whose accounts can be shown to be associated with infringing activity. This question involves tension between the economic interests of copyright owners/licensees, the privacy interests of internet users and the economic interests of the internet service provider. This tension in turn raises age-old problems of balance and proportionality between privacy, confidentiality and other competing rights and freedoms as well as the interests of society at large. The article concludes by briefly touching on privacy areas from outside of copyright and the Internet: including …

A Union Of Gender Equality And Pragmatic Patriarchy: International Marriages And Citizenship Laws In Singapore, Eugene K. B. Tan Jan 2008

A Union Of Gender Equality And Pragmatic Patriarchy: International Marriages And Citizenship Laws In Singapore, Eugene K. B. Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As a patriarchal society, government policies, societal norms and government regulations in Singapore mirror that normative ideal. Citizenship status and rights along gender lines, manifested in the legal recognition of children of international marriages, reflected this reality for much of Singapore's independence. However, the onslaught of globalization, the rise in international marriages, disconcerting declining birth rates, and an acceptance of 'foreign talent' have given the economic imperative and demographic impulse to grant citizenship (by descent) to a person born outside Singapore whose father or mother is a citizen of Singapore, by birth, registration or descent. Previously, such a person would …
