Estimating The Efficacy Of Drc-1339-Treated Rice Bait In Blackbird Staging Areas In North Dakota Using A Bioenergetics Simulation, Randal S. Stahl, John J. Johnston, George M. Linz Jan 2008

Estimating The Efficacy Of Drc-1339-Treated Rice Bait In Blackbird Staging Areas In North Dakota Using A Bioenergetics Simulation, Randal S. Stahl, John J. Johnston, George M. Linz

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

DRC-1339 is a pesticide used to induce mortality in pest birds and is being used successfully to reduce bird damage to a variety of agricultural products. The feasibility of using live decoy traps baited with DRC-1339-treated rice baits is being evaluated for reducing blackbird damage to sunflower in North Dakota. To estimate the take associated with the use of the DRC-1339-treated rice baits, we developed a bioenergetics simulation to estimate bait consumption by red-winged blackbirds, yellow-headed blackbirds and common grackles. This simulation incorporates a module to estimate mortality based on the amount of treated bait eaten by individual birds and …

Food Color, Flavor, And Conditioned Avoidance Among Red-Winged Blackbirds, Scott J. Werner, Bruce A. Kimball, Frederick D. Provenza Jan 2008

Food Color, Flavor, And Conditioned Avoidance Among Red-Winged Blackbirds, Scott J. Werner, Bruce A. Kimball, Frederick D. Provenza

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The relationship between food flavors and postingestive feedback enables mammalian herbivores to procure nutrients and avoid toxins within ever-changing environments. We conducted four experiments with red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) in captivity to determine the relative roles of color and flavor cues paired with negative postingestive feedback. We first conducted baseline tests to assess preferences for colors and flavors. All blackbirds preferred red- to blue-colored food, and they preferred umami- (L-alanine) flavored to bitter/astringent food (tannic acid). We observed no difference in consumption of salty (NaCl) vs sour (citric acid) foods during baseline tests (i.e., neutral flavors). We then …

A Study Of Innovation In Collegiate Business Education, Clair Don St. Jan 2008

A Study Of Innovation In Collegiate Business Education, Clair Don St.

Theses and Dissertations

Innovation and the creation of innovative organizations have become increasingly important in virtually every professional endeavor. The pressure to create new products and services, new business processes, and new approaches to solving old problems is immense. This study explores the dynamics of innovation in accredited schools of business, focusing upon sources of innovation, systems to support innovation, and obstacles to innovation. For the purposes of the study, innovation was defined in the broadest term. The concept of business concept innovation, innovation in any phase of a business model, serves as the foundation for defining innovation. Relatively little study has been …

Leadership Skills Development In Theological Seminary: Crucial Factors In Creating Effective Local Church Leadership, Nghia Van Nguyen Jan 2008

Leadership Skills Development In Theological Seminary: Crucial Factors In Creating Effective Local Church Leadership, Nghia Van Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

Leadership is a challenge for almost every organization. Like everyone else, the church is faced with similar challenges. Being leaders of the local congregation, pastors are the key element in church leadership. Church members are demanding more of their pastors than ever. Many pastors feel ill-prepared for these tasks. The theological seminary has been the primary place to prepare church leaders to do ministry. Previous researchers have stated that there is compelling evidence that many theological seminaries were not appropriately preparing men and women for the job the local congregation expects them to do for the church. The purpose of …

A Content Analysis Of Client Hope In Psychotherapy Sessions, Stacie Lyn Cooper Jan 2008

A Content Analysis Of Client Hope In Psychotherapy Sessions, Stacie Lyn Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the role of hope and how it was expressed by diverse clients in the initial sessions of individual psychotherapy. Five adult clients representing a range of ages, gender, ethnicities, religious/spiritual orientations, and presenting issues were observed in archival videotapes of their 3rd or 5th psychotherapy sessions at two southern California community counseling clinics. Content analysis revealed that client expression of hopefulness during these sessions varied in quantity and quality. Using a modified version of the CHANGE (Change and Growth Experiences Scale; Hayes & Feldman, 2005), the average scores among the 5 participants …

Socializing Youth For Adult Citizenship Roles: The Youth Citizenship Seminar, Melvin L. Musick Jan 2008

Socializing Youth For Adult Citizenship Roles: The Youth Citizenship Seminar, Melvin L. Musick

Theses and Dissertations

This study reports the results of an online questionnaire administered to a sample of adults who participated in a weeklong youth citizenship seminar at a private Christian university between 1986 and 2006. Using constructs put forth by Westheimer & Kahne (2004a), the study finds that former seminar participants demonstrate noteworthy levels of personally responsible and participatory citizenship, but less involvement in justiceoriented citizenship activities. Voting by respondents who were exposed to political issues or discussions held in their home was significant at the <0.05 level. Voting by respondents whose parents were active politically was significant at the <0.01 level. The study is responsive to concerns regarding effective strategies for increasing the probability of adolescents becoming involved citizens as adults. The study also informs the discussion on the developmental roots of civic involvement, and further elaborates the link between adolescent involvement in youth programs and adult civic behavior.

Client Perceptions Of The Most And Least Helpful Aspects Of Couple Therapy, Jessica Nelson Jan 2008

Client Perceptions Of The Most And Least Helpful Aspects Of Couple Therapy, Jessica Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Couple therapy research has traditionally utilized either quantitative or qualitative methods to examine the mechanisms of change and outcomes in couple therapy. Also, while studies have examined couples' experiences in therapy, few have specifically examined the most and least helpful aspects of therapy according to the couple. The purpose of the present study was to utilize a mixed-methods design to examine couples' written responses about their experiences in therapy. Two hundred ten individual responses were obtained from a sample of 134 couples who sought Traditional Behavioral Couple Therapy (TBCT) or Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) for marital distress as part …

The Next Generation Of Community College Presidents: Critical Characteristics, Competencies, And Professional Experiences, Kathleen Plinske Jan 2008

The Next Generation Of Community College Presidents: Critical Characteristics, Competencies, And Professional Experiences, Kathleen Plinske

Theses and Dissertations

Community colleges are an essential component of the higher education system and are critical to the nation's economic development. A number of challenges face community colleges, including the anticipated retirement of 84% of community college presidents within the next decade. In order to preserve their vitality, community colleges must be prepared to effectively select candidates to fill a large number of presidential vacancies. While the ultimate authority for hiring a community college president resides with boards of trustees, few studies have directly explored the perceptions of trustees regarding the desired qualifications of an ideal presidential candidate. The purpose of this …

Agricultural Certifications And Beekeeping: Lessons From An Apicultural Cooperative In Northeastern El Salvador, Central America, Jason Andrew Seagle Jan 2008

Agricultural Certifications And Beekeeping: Lessons From An Apicultural Cooperative In Northeastern El Salvador, Central America, Jason Andrew Seagle

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Beekeeping, and especially the production and sale of honey, is an on-farm diversification strategy that has significance to rural livelihoods in some of the most economically and environmentally marginalized regions of the world. Beekeeping also supports sustainable agriculture since it requires that vegetation and forest cover remain intact. However, the limited resources of beekeepers, including marketing constraints, make it difficult for them to realize the full value of their beekeeping enterprises. This professional paper focuses on the Eco-Morazán Cooperative in El Salvador as a case study to examine the costs, benefits and market potential of three types of certification schemes: …

Acute Cellular Uptake Of Abnormal Prion Protein Is Cell Type And Scrapie Strain Independent, Christopher Scott Greil Jan 2008

Acute Cellular Uptake Of Abnormal Prion Protein Is Cell Type And Scrapie Strain Independent, Christopher Scott Greil

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are fatal neurodegenerative diseases that include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy and sheep scrapie. TSE disease pathology and mechanisms within the central nervous system (CNS) of an infected host largely remains unclear. At the cellular level, the uptake of protease resistant prion protein (PrP-res), which strongly correlates with infectivity and is a valid marker for TSE infection, is one of the earliest events that must occur during TSE infection. Given the difficulty of clearly distinguishing input PrP-res from either PrP-res or protease-sensitive PrP (PrP-sen) made by the cell, the uptake of PrP-res from an infectious inoculum …

Assessment And Potential Adjustments To The Snow-Related Algorithms In Biome-Bgc, V4.2, Deana Ann Dewire Jan 2008

Assessment And Potential Adjustments To The Snow-Related Algorithms In Biome-Bgc, V4.2, Deana Ann Dewire

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Many watersheds throughout the mountain west are snow-melt dominated. Recent studies suggest that climatic shifts throughout the 20th century have diminished snowpack around the west, a trend that may accelerate in the future. Loss of critical snowpack could negatively affect the ecosystems and communities that have come to depend on it. Process models offer a way to illuminate the effects of climate change on snowpack. BIOME-BGC, a well established eco-system process model, contains a simple snow melt model for predicting daily snow water equivalent (SWE). The model requires standard daily meteorological data and can, therefore, be extrapolated over long periods …

Cottonwood Establishment In A Gravel-Bed River, Claudio Ivan Meier Jan 2008

Cottonwood Establishment In A Gravel-Bed River, Claudio Ivan Meier

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

I investigated the processes of establishment of the cottonwood Populus trichocarpa T.&G. along the pristine, 5th order, wandering floodplain of the gravel-bed Flathead River, Montana, USA. The focus of my research was to determine the mechanisms explaining successful recruitment on recently formed, unvegetated bars, covering a range of spatial scales from within-bar (~ 1 to 10 m) to across-reach (~ 1 to 10 km). Results are based on field observations and measurements over three growth seasons (2005 through 2007), as well as outdoor and laboratory experiments.

At the within-bar scale, I used a paired-plot sampling design to compare closely-located sites …

A Moving Experience: The Classroom Activities And Art Camp, Michelle S. Montierth Jan 2008

A Moving Experience: The Classroom Activities And Art Camp, Michelle S. Montierth

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

My final creative project began as an effort to incorporate bodily movement into the curriculum of my two-dimensional fine art classes in order to give students more opportunities for success in learning. My idea was to design, plan and execute many activities in order to provide students with a more kinesthetic learning environment. In the beginning, I focused on teaching some of the fundamentals of art using activities that would give the students opportunities to move their bodies. I found myself constantly on the lookout for new ways to incorporate movement in art, which led me to organize a summer …

Demography And Ecology Of A Declining Endemic: The Olympic Marmot, Suzanne Cox Griffin Jan 2008

Demography And Ecology Of A Declining Endemic: The Olympic Marmot, Suzanne Cox Griffin

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Protected areas serve to conserve species, habitats, and ecological processes. However, biological systems within even large parks are increasingly affected by outside perturbations. The Olympic marmots (Marmota olympus) are ground-dwelling squirrel that inhabit high-elevation meadows almost exclusively within Olympic National Park Despite this protection, anecdotal reports in the 1990's of disappearances from historically occupied locations suggested that the species was in decline. I used demographic monitoring, habitat surveys, and non-invasive genetic sampling to evaluate population status of the species and consider the effects of several possible stressors. Olympic marmots disappeared from ~50% of well-studied colonies, and abandoned burrow complexes were …

Social Capital And Vanua: Challenges To Governance Development In A Community-Based Natural Resource Management Project In Cuvu Tikina, Fiji Islands, Paul David Clark Jan 2008

Social Capital And Vanua: Challenges To Governance Development In A Community-Based Natural Resource Management Project In Cuvu Tikina, Fiji Islands, Paul David Clark

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Indigenous Fijians believe that survival of their culture is inextricably linked to their position as land and resource owners. This is summed up in the dual meaning of the term ‘vanua’, which literally means land but also symbolizes the cultural and socio-political traditions of the people. These traditions form the basis of Fiji’s natural resource management system and the production of social capital in Fijian villages. Due to legally recognized resource tenure and the communal nature of village living, Fiji has been a popular site for community-based natural resource management projects (CBNRM). The aim of these projects is to empower …

Pre- And Post-Copulatory Sexual Selection In The Tortoise Beetle Acromis Sparsa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Paula Alejandra Trillo Jan 2008

Pre- And Post-Copulatory Sexual Selection In The Tortoise Beetle Acromis Sparsa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Paula Alejandra Trillo

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Females in nearly all sexually reproducing taxa mate with multiple males. In these species, male fitness is dependent on traits used during both the pre-copulatory processes influencing mate acquisition, as well as the post-copulatory processes influencing fertilization. However, few studies have simultaneously examined pre- and post-copulatory sexual selection within a particular species, and we therefore have little understanding of how these processes interact to determine male reproductive success.

The objective of my study was to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the evolution of sexually selected traits by examining the interactions between pre- and post-copulatory processes in the tortoise beetle …
