Relationships Between Flood Frequency And Riparian Plant Community Structure In Mountain Streams Of Western Montana, Motoshi Honda Jan 2008

Relationships Between Flood Frequency And Riparian Plant Community Structure In Mountain Streams Of Western Montana, Motoshi Honda

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Flooding is the dominant factor structuring riparian plant communities along large, low elevation streams, but it is less clear what role flooding plays in the structure and composition of riparian plant communities along mountain streams. In the first part of this study, I examined the influence of four environmental variables (flood frequency, microtopography, light availability, and soil texture) and spatial heterogeneity on riparian plant community structure in seven study areas along mountain streams in western Montana, USA. Multivariate and spatial statistics were used to determine the relative strength of each set of factors and their interactions in explaining riparian plant …

Residential Development Patterns In Flathead County, Montana, Louis Anthony Jarvis Jan 2008

Residential Development Patterns In Flathead County, Montana, Louis Anthony Jarvis

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Population growth in the Non-Metropolitan West has increased over the last two decades. Many researchers have argued that natural amenity concerns, the quality and diversity of the environment, and the rural nature of the non-metropolitan West are the chief factors influencing individuals’ decisions to settle. This research examines a single high-amenity county in Western Montana, Flathead County, and analyzes the factors affecting land values and the probability of residential development at the parcel level. This research develops spatial variables thought to affect land values in an ArcGIS 9.2 environment and develops a regression model that estimates land values based on …

Response Of A Neil1 Deficient Murine Epithelial Cell Line To Chromate, Laura G. Little Jan 2008

Response Of A Neil1 Deficient Murine Epithelial Cell Line To Chromate, Laura G. Little

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

DNA is constantly exposed to oxidants which can lead to nucleobase damage. Chromium is of particular interest as a DNA oxidant because of its abundance in the environment and the ease with which it can be taken into a cell. Chromate, Cr(VI), ions are taken up by a cell through relatively non-selective anion channels which normally regulate uptake of phosphate and sulfate ions. Once in the cell, chromate ions are reduced by intracellular reductants such as ascorbate and glutathione to Cr(III). Highly reactive Cr(V) and Cr(IV) species are created during this transition which are able to directly oxidize DNA, particularly …

An Investigation Into The I-Stat Chem8+ System For The Measurement Of Sodium, Potassium, Urea & Creatinine., Gene Ferris Jan 2008

An Investigation Into The I-Stat Chem8+ System For The Measurement Of Sodium, Potassium, Urea & Creatinine., Gene Ferris

Theses

In the hospital environment Point of Care Testing (POCT) can be an invaluable tool in Emergency departments, Theatres, Intensive Care Units and Paediatric wards by providing rapid test results without the need for transport and laboratory processing. The study design included the collection and duplicate analysis of patient samples firstly using the i-STAT and then on the Architect c8000, a routine laboratory analyser. Statistical analysis was performed in order to determine if there is a statistically significant difference in results between the i-STAT POCT system and current laboratory instrumentation. The parameters analysed were the vital biochemical parameters Sodium (Na), Potassium …

On Imaging Air Pollutants In An Urban Street Canyon Using Tomographic-Doas, Stephen O'Driscoll Jan 2008

On Imaging Air Pollutants In An Urban Street Canyon Using Tomographic-Doas, Stephen O'Driscoll

Theses

A novel imaging technique based on the combination of differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) and tomographic reconstruction is presented. This approach, called Tomographic-DOAS, makes it possible to image the spatial distribution of multiple pollutants in an arbitrary region of the atmosphere. Tomographic-DOAS relies on a mathematical model relating measurements of differential optical density to an underlying spatial distribution of pollutants. This model requires the development of an optical system capable of generating multibeam paths or sensing geometries. The optical instrumentation used to construct such sensing geometries is described and a novel scanning beam arrangement that allows a single beam DOAS …

"Assessing The Attitudes Of Regional Business Toward Research And Development (R&D) And Networking Activities In The South West Of Ireland", Denis O'Flaherty Jan 2008

"Assessing The Attitudes Of Regional Business Toward Research And Development (R&D) And Networking Activities In The South West Of Ireland", Denis O'Flaherty

Theses

This project seeks to understand and measure the levels of Research and Development (R&D) and Networking Activity amongst regional business in the South West of Ireland. The South West region of Ireland is a unique and beautiful place, but presents challenges and obstacles in terms of running a business within the region.

It is now generally accepted by policy-makers that Ireland is going to become increasingly dependent upon its indigenous businesses, most of which can be classified as Small-to- Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The question of R&D and networking was framed within the context of location, given the physical characteristics of …

“Cabhair Is Cairde Is Grásta Ó Dhia Chugainn" : A Study Of The "Saíocht" Of A Parish In Co. Clare., Flan Garvey

Theses

This research is based on a rural parish, Inagh-Kilnamona, in mid North Clare. It deals with its physical hinterland, its people, past and present, its history and folklore. Over the centuries, its people have moulded the land. The buildings and infrastructure represent man-made heritage and although the area would have been described as ‘wild’ some hundreds of years ago, it has been transformed by man into being what it is today, a modem place with a modem society, a changed society but still deeply rooted in its past.

The time has come to excavate the past by research to give …

The Application Of Social Marketing In Reducing Road Traffic Accidents Among Young Male Drivers - An Investigation Using Physical Fear Threat Appeals., Brian Harman Jan 2008

The Application Of Social Marketing In Reducing Road Traffic Accidents Among Young Male Drivers - An Investigation Using Physical Fear Threat Appeals., Brian Harman

Theses

In 2004, the Irish government rolled out its new two year road safety strategy which aimed to reduce road deaths in the Republic of Ireland to no more than 300 road fatalities by 2006. The strategy failed to reach its target. There were 368 road fatalities on Irish roads in 2006. The effects of the penalty points system, which was introduced in 2003, is considered responsible for reducing Irish road fatality figures to their lowest level since 1964 (335 deaths). However the beneficial effects of the penalty points system have proved transitory and road deaths have risen in recent years. …
