Democratic Principle And Electoral College Reform, Ethan J. Leib, Eli J. Mark
Democratic Principle And Electoral College Reform, Ethan J. Leib, Eli J. Mark
Faculty Scholarship
The Electoral College is a relic from another time and is in tension with the modern constitutional command of “one person, one vote.” But the Electoral College is, nevertheless, ensconced in our Constitution—and, as a result, we would need to amend the document to alter or abolish it from our political fabric. Still, some states are toying with state-based Electoral College reforms. Thus, irrespective of whether voters in those states favor the abolition of the Electoral College through a federal constitutional amendment, they must critically examine the democratic merits of these state-based reform options. Categorically rejecting all state-based reform is …

The Social Construction Of The Responsible Corporate Citizen: Sustainability Reports Of The Global Automotive Firms, George Shinkle, J. William Spencer
The Social Construction Of The Responsible Corporate Citizen: Sustainability Reports Of The Global Automotive Firms, George Shinkle, J. William Spencer
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
The constitutive meanings of responsible corporate environmental citizenship are to be found in global discourses. We use Gubrium and Holstein‘s framework on interpretive practice to study the Corporate Sustainability Reports of multinational automotive companies regarding global warming. We observe three common themes – recognizing the issue of greenhouse gases, acknowledging stakeholders, and being role models for society. However, these themes take on unique meanings vis-à-vis each corporate identity. We utilize our analytic findings to offer theoretic propositions regarding emergent meanings of corporate environmental citizenship. These meanings are important to understand as firm behavior will be based on these socially-constructed meanings.

Organizational Imprinting: Informing Firm Behavior In Domestic And International Contexts, Aldas Kriauciunas, George Shinkle
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
We argue that organizational imprinting theory provides an important causal mechanism and originating source for numerous behaviors which are applicable to several research literatures. We briefly explain the imprinting process, how the imprinting process can be informed by other theories, and how imprinting may be better utilized than some frameworks such as inertia or social embeddedness to understand the initiation of firm behavior. We follow with examples from organizational behavior, organizational change and learning, entrepreneurship, and mergers & acquisitions where imprinting theory could be used to explain observed behaviors along with potential avenues and ideas for future research in these …

Sheltering Corporate Assets From Political Extraction, Lorenzo Caprio, Mara Faccio, John J. Mcconnell
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
We hypothesize that firms structure their asset holdings so as to shelter assets from extraction by politicians and bureaucrats. Specifically, in countries where the threat of political extraction is higher, we hypothesize that firms will hold a lower fraction of their assets in liquid form. Consistent with this conjecture, using firm-level data from 109 countries, we find that, across countries, corporate holdings of cash and marketable securities are negatively correlated with measures of political corruption. Further, we find that annual investment in property, plant, equipment, and inventory plus dividends is positively correlated with the measures of corruption suggesting that owners …

Experimental visualizations of the three dimensional (3D) convection patterns generated near an evaporating meniscus in horizontally oriented capillary tubes are presented. These patterns are caused due to the differential evaporation along the meniscus. In this study, transparent capillary tubes with refractive index close to that of the evaporating liquid were used to minimize refraction effects and obtain velocity vectors near the walls. Polystyrene fluorescent particles of 0.5 lm diameter suspended in methanol were used to make the measure- ments in tubes of 75, 200 and 400 lm diameter. For the 75 lm tube, gravity was observed to have no effect …

Lossy image compression algorithms sacrifice perfect imagereconstruction in favor of decreased storage requirements. Modelossy compression schemes, such as JPEG2000, rely upon the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to achieve high levels of compression while minimizing the loss of information for image reconstruction. Some compression applications require higher levels of compression than those achieved through application of the DWT and entropy coding. In such lossy systems, quantization provides high compression rates at the cost of increased distortion. Unfortunately, as the amount of quantization increases, the performance of the DWT for accurate image reconstruction deteriorates. Previous research demonstrates that a genetic algorithm can …

Mechanisms Of Nickel-Based Coatings For Fretting Wear Mitigation Of Ti6al4v Interfaces, Carl H. Hager Jr.
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Fretting wear is an accumulation of damage that occurs at component interfaces that are subjected to high contact stresses coupled with low amplitude oscillation. The key to fretting wear reduction in metallic contacts is the mitigation of galling at the interface, followed by the control of debris production and the rheology of active wear debris. Once the thin surface species of the metallic interfaces is dispersed, adhesion between the contacting nascent surfaces causes the inception of severe surface deformation and material transfer or removal. This is extremely apparent in the fretting wear of aerospace materials such as titanium alloy and …

Novel Redox And Dna-Dependent Conformational Changes In Human Ku, A Dna-Double Strand Break Repair Protein, Jason Alexander Lehman
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Ionizing radiation (IR) and radiomimetic drugs used in cancer chemotherapy cause DNA double-strand breaks which are repaired by the nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) pathway. Ku is a heterodimeric protein comprised of 70 and 80 kDa subunits and recognizes free DNA ends. Once Ku is bound to DNA, it binds to the DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs), and forms a heterotrimeric DNA-PK complex for repair and damage signaling.
We have analyzed the Ku protein using multiple biochemical techniques and uncovered a novel reversible redox change (Andrews, Lehman and Turchi, (2006) JBC 281(19):13596-603). From this data, we hypothesized that a redox-dependent …

This study used sap flow measurements and satellite imagery to estimatewater use by cottonwood (Populus fremontii S. Wats. ssp) trees in an irrigated restoration plot at Cibola National Wildlife Refuge on the Lower Colorado River. Several thousand hectares of irrigated plots of this type are planned to improve riparian habitat on the river, hence it is important to know how much water the trees require. In this study, the ET rates for 20 Freemont cottonwood trees, from an 8 ha plot, were monitored over a 30-day period. ET rates were estimated by measuring sap flow through branches of the trees. …

Ionic liquids are an attractive possibility for battery electrolytes. Five ionic liquids were synthesized using a 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (XMI+) cation, where the alkyl group was ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, or hexyl, and a bis(pentafluoroethyl-sulfonyl)imide (Beti-) anion. The absorption and desorption of water, conductivities, densities, viscosities, decomposition temperatures, and electrochemical properties were studied. These ionic liquids were found to absorb less water than previously studied ionic liquids with tetrafluoroborate (BF4-) and hexafluorophosphate (PF6-) anions. Their conductivities decreased with longer alkyl chains on the imidazolium cation and were lower than ionic liquids with BF4- as the anion. The densities of the ionic liquids …

Multi-carrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) is an important multiple access candidate for 4G wireless communication system. While MC-CDMA provides high performance and high capacity in frequency selective fading channels, it is very sensitive to the signal distortion, especially the Inter Carrier Interference (ICI). We apply self-cancelation and a frequency transmission paradigm to MC-CDMA system to improve the sytem performance in an ICI rich environment. Furthermore, we combine the frequency transmission paradigm FD-MC-CDMA with ICI cancelation. Also, we apply all these three schemes into non-contiguous OFDM and non-contiguous MC-CDMA systems in simple Cognitive Radio communication environments and present the simulation results. Theoretical …

Intestinal microflora refers to all the different species of bacteria that reside in the human gut and is an important organ of the human body because almost all the digestive reactions of the host occur in the intestine. The bacteria of the intestine play a key role in this process by supplementing the intestine with various enzymes and proteins that are required for the digestive process. At the same time, these bacteria were shown to be implicated in a variety of gastrointestinal disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disorder and Gastrointestinal Cancer, but with the current knowledge about the …

Effective vehicular power management requires accurate knowledge of battery state, including state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH). An essential functionality of automotive batteries is delivering high power in short periods to crank the engine. A well-known approach to battery SOH monitoring is to infer battery state-of-health from battery impedance or resistance, which is not robust to variation of battery types. The research and development of more reliable battery state-of-health monitoring methods to ensure vehicle start-up ability are presented in this thesis. The methods include a battery cranking voltage based method, a parity-relation based method using battery voltage and cranking current signals, …
Public Service Must Begin At Home: The Lawyer As Civics Teacher In Everyday Practice, Bruce A. Green, Russell Pearce
Public Service Must Begin At Home: The Lawyer As Civics Teacher In Everyday Practice, Bruce A. Green, Russell Pearce
Faculty Scholarship
Fifty years ago, the leading national representatives of the American legal profession, the American Bar Association (ABA), and the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), issued a joint report (the Report) on the nature of lawyers' professional responsibility in the context of the adversary system. Principally authored by legal philosopher Lon Fuller, who co-chaired the joint conference that issued it, the Report's premise was that the legal profession's inherited traditions provided only indirect guidance to lawyers in light of their changing roles, and that a "true sense of professional responsibility" must derive from an understanding of the "special services" that …

The measure of bone strength and fracture risk assessment is based primarily on bone mineral density (BMD). Computed tomography (CT), a frequently used radiographic technique that provides cross-sectional images, can be used for BMD quantification. Called quantitative computed tomography (QCT), it determines true volumetric density and also differentiates between trabecular and cortical bone. As a result, QCT improves the ability to detect early changes in trabecular BMD accurately and precisely.
The introduction of helical CT for quantitative analysis introduces new complexities. Even though using multi-detector helical CT for BMD assessment is being suggested, a detailed analysis of its validity is …
Analysis And Interpretation Of 2d Seismic Data Over The Ancona Gas Storage Facility, Illinois, Using Petrel Visualization Software, Nilanjan Roy
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Intriguing features of the North American mid-continent are the widespread and prominent subhorizontal seismic reflectors that are thought to be associated with thick sequences of layered rocks beneath the Phanerozoic cover of the Illinois Basin. The present investigation was an effort to identify and interpret new structural features of the pre-Paleozoic crust at the Ancona Gas Storage field in north-central Illinois. A grid of existing seismic data was reprocessed using the technique of extended correlation.
The reprocessed data was then analyzed using Schlumberger's Petrel visualization software for seismic interpretation and reconstruction of the 2D and 3D crustal geometry. The reprocessing …

Is There A Dual Banking System , Carl Felsenfeld, Genci Bilali
Faculty Scholarship
There is a fierce controversy being waged today about the status of the historic dual banking system in American law. National banks (banks chartered by the national government) derive their powers from federal law. States, on the other hand, assert that they should be able to control certain aspects of national bank operations such as consumer protection written as state law. While the national banks acknowledge that states do have certain areas where they may control national bank activities-much contract law, for example, which is essentially state law-the national banks also assert a high level of authority-preemption-over the states where …

Cross-Section Of Option Returns And Volatility, Amit Goyal, Alessio Saretto
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
We study the cross-section of stock option return by constructing decile portfolios of straddles and delta-hedged calls and puts based on sorting stocks on the difference between historical realized volatility and at-the-money implied volatility. We find that a zero-cost trading strategy that is long (short) in the portfolio with a large positive (negative) difference between these two volatility measures produces an economically and statistically significant average monthly return. The results are robust to different market conditions, to stock risks-characteristics, to various industry groupings, to option liquidity characteristics, and are not explained by usual risk factor models.
