Surface Water Interaction With The Flood Plain In The Lower Virgin River Clark County, Nevada, Jeffrie L Pompeo Jan 2008

Surface Water Interaction With The Flood Plain In The Lower Virgin River Clark County, Nevada, Jeffrie L Pompeo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Development of existing surface water rights on the Virgin River would decrease Southern Nevada's dependency on the Colorado River. Three monitoring sites were established to examine the relationship between Virgin River surface water flows and the floodplain aquifer. Automated water level measuring devices were installed in piezometers and wells to continuously track water levels and flow direction. Pump tests were conducted to establish the hydraulic parameters of the floodplain aquifer. Water chemistry data was analyzed to help determine the correlation between the floodplain aquifer and Virgin River water. Precipitation, recharge, streamflow and ET estimates were used to discuss water budgets. …

Surface And Interface Study Of Cesium On Silicon Carbide And Hopg Using Photoelectron Spectroscopy And Atomic Force Microscopy, Sharath Sudarshanam Jan 2008

Surface And Interface Study Of Cesium On Silicon Carbide And Hopg Using Photoelectron Spectroscopy And Atomic Force Microscopy, Sharath Sudarshanam

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

TRistructural-ISOtropic (TRISO) fuel particles are being developed for the use in next generation nuclear power plants. They consist of a UO2 kernel coated with layers of different materials to keep the fission products inside the particle. The kernel is surrounded by a porous carbon layer, followed by a dense inner pyrolytic carbon layer, a SiC layer, and a dense outer pyrolytic carbon layer. One central question of this technology is whether the fission products "corrode" this shell of the TRISO particle during operation. To answer this question, we have investigated the interface between cesium (Cs, which is one of the …

Virginia Earth Science Collaborative: Developing Highly Qualified Earth Science Teachers, J. Cothron Jan 2008

Virginia Earth Science Collaborative: Developing Highly Qualified Earth Science Teachers, J. Cothron

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

A collaborative of seven institutes of higher education and two non-profit organizations developed and implemented five earth science courses totaling eighteen credits that enabled secondary teachers to acquire an add-on earth science endorsement: Geology 1: Physical Geology (4), Geology II: Geology of Virginia (4), Oceanography (4), Astronomy (Space Science for Teachers) (3), and Meteorology (3). These courses were collaboratively developed and included rigorous academic content, research-based instructional strategies, and intense field experiences. The thirty-three sections offered statewide served 499 participants. Three courses were offered to strengthen the skills of earth science teachers: Teaching Eath Science Topics to Special Education Students …

Meteorology And Cimatology: On-Line Weather Studies, J. A. Mulvany, M. Bentley, E. Pyle Jan 2008

Meteorology And Cimatology: On-Line Weather Studies, J. A. Mulvany, M. Bentley, E. Pyle

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Through the Virginia Earth Science Collaborative (VESC), a partnership of nine institutes of higher education, non-profit organizations, and eighty-three school divisions, a 3-credit, graduate-level meteorology course was offered six times between Spring 2006 and Fall 2007. The course, entitled Meteorology, was offered at three locations (Richmond, Abingdon, and Harrisonburg), and a local instructor facilitated each section. Funding for the course development, instructor stipends, and participant expenses (including travel, meals, and tuition) was provided through a competitive Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) grant funded through the federal No Child Left Behind legislation of 2001. The framework of the course was the …

Bouncing Back After Bullying: The Resiliency Of Female Victims Of Relational Aggression, Laura R. Hammel Jan 2008

Bouncing Back After Bullying: The Resiliency Of Female Victims Of Relational Aggression, Laura R. Hammel

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Although strides recently have been made to facilitate the understanding of relational aggression and its consequences, one significant limitation has been the lack of research on long-term impact. Through a grounded theory approach, this study examines how resiliency behaviors exhibited by victims of relational aggression during their adolescent years aid in the development of trusting adult friendships.

Frequency Of Principal Turnover In Ohio's Elementary Schools, Michelle Chaplin Partlow, Carolyn S. Ridenour Jan 2008

Frequency Of Principal Turnover In Ohio's Elementary Schools, Michelle Chaplin Partlow, Carolyn S. Ridenour

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

One remedy for Ohio schools that fail to meet the state’s test score criteria for “effectiveness” is to force a change in the principalship. Concerns have been raised that such a remedy may simultaneously undermine the organizational stability of the school. The researchers in this study examined the frequency with which elementary building principals in 109 southwest Ohio schools changed during the 7-year period of 1996-1997 (FY 1997) through 2002-2003 (FY 2003). The researchers found that urban and rural schools had a significantly higher turnover frequency than did suburban schools. Ways to counter frequent principal turnover while, at the same …

Teacher Efficacy And Career Indecision Among Pre-Service Teachers: A Model Of Direct And Indirect Effects, Mary Beth Sloane, Mary D. Hancock Jan 2008

Teacher Efficacy And Career Indecision Among Pre-Service Teachers: A Model Of Direct And Indirect Effects, Mary Beth Sloane, Mary D. Hancock

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The present study investigates, through path analytic techniques, the influence of teacher efficacy on the career indecision of pre-service teachers. The sample consists of 305 students enrolled in Teacher Education programs at two southeastern universities. Results indicate that general teacher efficacy and career self-efficacy have significant direct effects on career indecision. Career self-efficacy mediates significant indirect effects for both general and personal teacher efficacy.

Ayp Accountability Policy And Assessment Theory Conflicts, Randall S. Davies Jan 2008

Ayp Accountability Policy And Assessment Theory Conflicts, Randall S. Davies

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

A major objective of NCLB is to hold schools accountable for student achievement including closing the achievement gap and raising standards of student academic proficiency. While the majority of individuals support the underlying values of NCLB, not all agree its accountability policy is reasonable. The most problematic issue is the mandate that schools be held accountable to ensure all students perform at grade level when the methods used by states to determine grade level proficiency preclude the attainment of this standard. The unintended consequences of a policy that does not align theoretically with established educational best practice inevitably result in …

Understanding School Board Members' Perceptions Of Superintendents' Leader Behaviors, John V. Richard, Sharon D. Kruse Jan 2008

Understanding School Board Members' Perceptions Of Superintendents' Leader Behaviors, John V. Richard, Sharon D. Kruse

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The study of school leadership has been a topic of considerable investigation. Primarily, this literature has focused on the leadership of principals and superintendents. Although school boards work hand in hand with school leaders concerning the decision making functions of district business, a literature base specifically focused on school board members and their perceptions of school superintendents' leadership behavior is lacking. This paper provides a framework for understanding school board members’ perceptions and suggests that school board members’ views of superintendents' leadership behaviors may be influenced by demographic factors including years of experience and gender of board members.
