What I Believe About Leadership Education : A Reflective Essay, Melissa M. Stuber

Graduate Research Papers

In a time where the stakes are high and pressures from the federal and . state government are mandating that all students are to achieve and no child is to be left behind, school improvement needs to be at the forefront of education in the state of Iowa. "Student achievement is the cornerstone of the success of principals, and teachers are a key factor in the area of student performance" (Zepeda, 2004, p.12). Unfortunately, there is not one catchall solution to school improvement; the solution is unique to the school setting and the students it serves. As a result, it …

A Vision For Leading And Learning : A Reflective Essay, Todd M. Werner

Graduate Research Papers

It was my junior year of high school when I first started thinking about becoming a teacher. That year Williamsburg High School had hired a new Government teacher who was also the assistant boy's basketball coach. He was a first year teacher but he came out and really tried to make a difference from the start. I vividly remember how he tried to consistently challenge us in the classroom and in the gym. He worked hard at what he did and he expected the same in return. Even when he was pushing and challenging, he treated everyone with respect and …

Wilfulness Versus Expectation: A Promise-Based Defense Of Wilfull Breach Doctrine, Steve Thel, Peter Siegelman Jan 2008

Wilfulness Versus Expectation: A Promise-Based Defense Of Wilfull Breach Doctrine, Steve Thel, Peter Siegelman

Faculty Scholarship

Willful breach doctrine should be a major embarrassment to contract law. If the default remedy for breach is expectation damages designed to put the injured promisee in the position she would have been in if the contract had been performed, then the promisor's behavior-the reason for the breach-looks to be irrelevant in assessing damages. And yet the cases are full of references to "willful" breaches, which seem often to be treated more harshly than ordinary ones based on the promisor's bad/willful conduct. Our explanation is that willful breaches are best understood as those that should be prevented or deterred because …

Eomesodermin, A Target Gene Of Pou4f2, Is Required For Retinal Ganglion Cell And Optic Nerve Development In The Mouse, Chai-An Mao, Takae Kiyama, Ping Pan, Yasuhide Furuta, Anna-Katerina Hadjantonakis, William H Klein

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The mechanisms regulating retinal ganglion cell (RGC) development are crucial for retinogenesis and for the establishment of normal vision. However, these mechanisms are only vaguely understood. RGCs are the first neuronal lineage to segregate from pluripotent progenitors in the developing retina. As output neurons, RGCs display developmental features very distinct from those of the other retinal cell types. To better understand RGC development, we have previously constructed a gene regulatory network featuring a hierarchical cascade of transcription factors that ultimately controls the expression of downstream effector genes. This has revealed the existence of a Pou domain transcription factor, Pou4f2, that …

Emerging Biotechnologies Demand Defeat Of Proposed Legislation That Attempts To Ban Gene Patents, Gregory C. Ellis Jan 2008

Emerging Biotechnologies Demand Defeat Of Proposed Legislation That Attempts To Ban Gene Patents, Gregory C. Ellis

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

In October 2006, Andrew Fire and Craig Mello won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering a process known as RNA interference in the soil nematode Caenorhaditis elegans. More commonly known as RNAi, this process has great therapeutic significance for humans because of its ability to specifically and efficiently regulate gene expression. The capacity to easily regulate gene expression will tremendously impact our ability to combat a wide variety of disorders ranging from cancer to infectious diseases. While the mechanism of RNAi was first published within the last decade, three RNAi-based human therapies are already in clinical trails.

Help! My Intellectual Property Is Trapped: Second Life, Conflicting Ownership Claims And The Problem Of Access, Megan B. Caramore Jan 2008

Help! My Intellectual Property Is Trapped: Second Life, Conflicting Ownership Claims And The Problem Of Access, Megan B. Caramore

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The controversy over ownership of virtual “real” property and intellectual property rights within online games has existed for nearly as long as the technology to create such games. Previously, the owners of virtual worlds possessed sole control over everything within the world as a result of rather strict terms contained in their user licensing agreements. Lately, this controversy has acquired a new dimension in a rapidly expanding game called Second Life. Second Life is different from most online games because it expressly guarantees its users the rights to content they create within the game. To the extent that Second Life …

Overcoming Lochner In The Twenty-First Century: Taking Both Rights And Popular Sovereignty Seriously As We Seek To Secure Equal Citizenship And Promote The Public Good, Thomas B. Mcaffee

University of Richmond Law Review

Professor McAffee reviews substantive due process as the textual basis for modern fundamental rights constitutional decision-making. He contends that we should avoid both the undue literalism that rejects the idea of implied rights, as well as the attempt to substitute someone's preferred moral vision for the limits, and compromises, that are implicit in and intended by the Constitution's text. He argues, moreover, that we can largely harmonizethe variousgoals of our constitutionalsystem by taking rights se- riously and by understanding that securing rights does not ex-haustthe Constitution'spurposes.

Public Employee Speech, Categorical Balancing And § 1983: A Critique Of Garcetti V. Ceballos, Sheldon H. Nahmod

University of Richmond Law Review

I propose to discuss Garcetti's First Amendment reasoning as well as the implications of the § 1983' setting in which Garcetti and other public employee free speech cases typically arise. After briefly setting out the Court's opinion and the three dissenting opinions, I begin by addressing the pros and cons of Garcetti, and in the course of so doing, I discuss the prior Pickering-Connick landscape that Garcetti so significantly altered. I consider the deeper First Amendment implications of Garcetti, including itsuse of categorical balancing to create an absolute immunity fromFirst Amendment liability for employer discipline based on job-required public employee …

Parametric Study Of A Pulsed Vertical Jet In Cross-Flow, Guillaume Francois Bidan Jan 2008

Parametric Study Of A Pulsed Vertical Jet In Cross-Flow, Guillaume Francois Bidan

LSU Master's Theses

The potential of pulsed vertical jet in cross-flow for film cooling purposes was experimentally studied and is discussed in this Thesis. A single vertical jet placed in laminar cross-flow conditions was first characterized in steady state at relatively low blowing ratios ranging from 0.150 to 0.600, using Mie scattering visualization methods and hot-wire measurements. Wavelet spectral analysis and image quantification algorithms were applied to the velocity records and averaged visualizations to obtain quantitative data on the jet characteristic frequencies, penetration and coverage. Two different regimes characterized by different structures are identified and adapted scaling variables are provided. Trends in the …

Scholarly Communication In The Sciences, From Tycho Brahe To The Cdc, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina Jan 2008

Scholarly Communication In The Sciences, From Tycho Brahe To The Cdc, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

This catalog accompanied the exhibit of documents which focus on 400 years of scholarly communication, showing how scientists have used print culture to document their activities, disseminate information, and share discoveries. The increasing professionalization of science can be seen in examples of publishing from the early 16th century to the present day. In the late medieval and early modem periods, science and the dissemination of scientific research was generally an informal, gentlemanly pursuit. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it changed into an increasingly rigorous and organized practice, with growing standards for verification, inclusion, and publication.

Protein Degradation In Mammalian Hibernator, Spermophilus Lateralis, Vanja Velickovska Jan 2008

Protein Degradation In Mammalian Hibernator, Spermophilus Lateralis, Vanja Velickovska

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Protein synthesis is virtually non-existent during hibernation in golden-mantled ground squirrels. In the presence of negligible protein synthesis continued protein degradation would disrupt the maintenance of homeostasis and the survival of the animal. Earlier investigation showed that ubiquitin conjugate concentrations increase 2-3 fold during hibernation, which would seemingly suggest an increase of protein degradation. In this study I examined protein degradation per se as a function of the temperatures experienced by the hibernator and demonstrated that protein degradation is virtually absent at low temperatures. A new method was developed to determine the rates of ubiquitylation as a function of temperature, …

The Effects Of Automated Essay Scoring As A High School Classroom Intervention, Kathie L Frost Jan 2008

The Effects Of Automated Essay Scoring As A High School Classroom Intervention, Kathie L Frost

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This quasi-experimental, mixed methods study investigated whether students writing development and proficiency, in combination with teacher-led instruction, are significantly affected by the use of an automated essay scoring (AES) system. The ninth grade standard and honors English students were divided into control and treatment groups at a large, urban high school. Student writing was examined for any changes in proficiency, measured by human- and AES-scored holistic measures. A developmental writing index was used to analyze the rate of change in pre- and post-essays. The AES system was further researched by comparing the treatment and control groups' trait score categories. Finally, …

Chemical Synthesis And Characterization Of Aniline Based Palladium Composites And Complexes, Jade Lorrayne Morgan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The chemical synthesis of aniline based palladium materials was achieved by the use of the chemical oxidants, PdCl4 2- and PdCl62-. Complex formation was favored by using aniline and polymer formation was favored by the use of n-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (NPPD). All materials were prepared with or without acid. Also, Characterization techniques such as FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy were used; Hydrogen sorption studies were carried out using a GC/Hydrogen Generator. The aniline complexes had sorption properties up to 1.5% and the NPPD composites showed sorption up to 0.7%. It was found that the …

Victimization On Social Networking Sites, Melanie Ann Taylor Jan 2008

Victimization On Social Networking Sites, Melanie Ann Taylor

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of victimization on social networking sites. Current media reports depict social networks as being targets for violence and sexual predators, but limited research on the subject has shown otherwise. A total of 354 students completed a survey regarding harassment, stalking, and sexual assault both online and offline. Koss' (1998) Sexual Experiences Survey was also used to measure sexual assault rates amongst the current sample. Analyses showed that violent victimization rates were low on social networking sites, while verbal harassment, incessant unwanted behaviors, and sexual harassment were all fairly prevalent on …

Pedogenesis Of Vesicular Horizons In Disturbed And Undisturbed Soils, Maureen L Yonovitz Jan 2008

Pedogenesis Of Vesicular Horizons In Disturbed And Undisturbed Soils, Maureen L Yonovitz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Increasing desertification and anthropogenic soil disturbance is of growing concern to restoration ecologists in the Southwestern United States. This study examines how a common soil horizon of arid lands, the vesicular horizon, which is characterized by its discontinuous pores, responds to disturbance. The vesicular horizon is a near surface soil horizon typically composed of fine grained windblown material found beneath a desert pavement. Disturbance to the vesicular horizon may result in a change in pore morphology that will alter water movement through the horizon, affecting the ecology of the region. This research examines differences in pore morphology (area, perimeter, length …
