Comparison Of Body Fat Reduction In Overweight And Obese Subjects Utilizing Personalized Low-Fat Meal Plans And Non-Personalized Low-Fat Meal Plans, Stacy Dawn Buzan

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background: Obesity is an epidemic and studies are needed to provide recommendations for more effective strategies to increase self-efficacy and long-term adoption of healthy nutritional habits in individuals who are obese.

Objective: To compare the use of personalized low-fat meal plans vs. non-personalized low-fat meal plans and body fat reduction in overweight and obese subjects 25 to 45 years of age.

Design: A 2-month comparative randomized block experimental study, in which subjects were randomly assigned to either Treatment 1 Group, receiving non-personalized low-fat meal plans, or Treatment 2 Group, receiving personalized low-fat meal plans with two 30-minute dietetic consultations.

Cognitive And Emotional Barriers To Colorectal Cancer Surveillance: Increasing Screening Rates Within The Community, Cari N. Krzyzaniak Jan 2008

Cognitive And Emotional Barriers To Colorectal Cancer Surveillance: Increasing Screening Rates Within The Community, Cari N. Krzyzaniak

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background: The rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in the United States continues to be low, allowing colorectal cancers to remain undiagnosed and mortality rates to remain high. Current literature points to lack of education, healthcare access, and physician counseling as key barriers to screening, in addition to cognitive-emotional apprehensions.

Objectives: This study examined whether cognitive-emotional apprehensions are barriers to screening despite physician recommendation. Moreover, it examined what particular cognitive-emotional barriers inhibit participation and how these barriers can potentially be alleviated.

Methods: A convenience sample of 40 faculty members at Eastern Michigan University were surveyed about attitudes toward screening.

Results: …

The Development Of A Novel And Potentially Nondestructive Pretreatment For The Radiocarbon Dating Of Archaeological Artifacts, Mary Ellen Ellis Jan 2008

The Development Of A Novel And Potentially Nondestructive Pretreatment For The Radiocarbon Dating Of Archaeological Artifacts, Mary Ellen Ellis

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Because the traditional acid-alkali-acid method for pretreating archaeological artifacts prior to radiocarbon dating is destructive to most materials, the possibility of developing an alternative pretreatment is important to preserving culturally- and historically-significant artifacts. The alkali step usually involves a 1M or higher concentration NaOH wash to remove humic acid contamination. The purpose of this work is to replace the alkali step with an equally effective, yet less harsh treatment. Charcoal soaked in a humic acid standard was used to mimic a contaminated artifact. Residues from treatments with NaOH, phosphate buffer (pH 8), and deionized water were characterized using THM-GC-MS. Preliminary …

The Effect Of The Food Allergen Labeling And Consumer Protection Act (Falcpa) On The Accidental Food Allergen Ingestion Rate In Adults With Self-Reported Food Allergies, Susan Liebert Jan 2008

The Effect Of The Food Allergen Labeling And Consumer Protection Act (Falcpa) On The Accidental Food Allergen Ingestion Rate In Adults With Self-Reported Food Allergies, Susan Liebert

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background: The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) recently required bolded allergens or “contains” statements on food product labels. Very few U.S. studies have looked at the accidental food allergen ingestion rate in adults. Since the emotional and medical costs of allergic reactions can be high, it is important to determine if the FALCPA is helping to reduce the accidental food allergen ingestion rate in adults with self-reported food allergies.

Background: The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) recently required bolded allergens or “contains” statements on food product labels. Very few U.S. studies have looked at …

The Examination Of Control Entropy (Ce) Of Triaxial Accelerometry And Lactate Threshold In Runners During Treadmill Exercise, Michael A. Busa Jan 2008

The Examination Of Control Entropy (Ce) Of Triaxial Accelerometry And Lactate Threshold In Runners During Treadmill Exercise, Michael A. Busa

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if the blood lactate threshold could be identified through the visual examination of the control entropy of high-resolution accelerometry in intercollegiate endurance runners (n=7).

In procedures approved by the Eastern Michigan University College of Health and Human Services Human Subject Review Board, runners performed two lactate threshold tests to determine the relationship between the pace of running and the blood lactate concentration. High-resolution accelerometry (HRA) data as well as the metabolic cost of exercise was also collected during these trials.

Control entropy (CE) analysis was conducted on the HRA of each individual …

Anaerobic And Performance Adaptations To A “Live High–Train Low” Approach Using Simulated Altitude Exposure, Ian Ratz Jan 2008

Anaerobic And Performance Adaptations To A “Live High–Train Low” Approach Using Simulated Altitude Exposure, Ian Ratz

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if a seven-day live high–train low (LHTL) simulated altitude exposure could improve (a) anaerobic and/or aerobic capacity (VO2peak) in trained cyclists (n = 10) and (b) VO2peak and/or 400m swimming performance in collegiate swimmers (n=8).

In procedures approved by the EMU Human Subjects Review Board, cyclists performed seven cycle ergometer trials to measure maximal mean power output (MMPO4min), maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD), and VO2peak, whereas swimmers completed five incremental arm ergometer trials (VO2peak) and 400m swimming performance trials before and after LHTL. …

Jury Trial Innovations Across America: What We Are Teaching And Learning From Each Other, Gregory E. Mize, Paula Hannaford-Agor Jan 2008

Jury Trial Innovations Across America: What We Are Teaching And Learning From Each Other, Gregory E. Mize, Paula Hannaford-Agor

Faculty Publications

Between 2004 and 2006 the National Center for State Courts conducted three related studies of jury practices in state and federal courts throughout the United States. Combined, the studies make up the State-of-the-States Survey of Jury Improvement Efforts, a first-ever effort to survey the entire field of jury issues and practices from state and local jury reform and improvement efforts to in-court use of tools aimed at improving juror comprehension and participation-including note-taking, juror questions and providing jurors with written instructions. The resulting data sets are available in full online, allowing users to review their own states' practices in comparison …

Early Resident Experiences At A New Mixed-Income Development In Chicago, Mark L. Joseph Jan 2008

Early Resident Experiences At A New Mixed-Income Development In Chicago, Mark L. Joseph

Faculty Scholarship

Mixed-income development is an increasingly popular poverty deconcentration strategy in the United States but there have been few in-depth studies about the experiences of residents once they move in to the new housing developments. This article explores the early experiences of residents of all income levels who have moved into a new mixed-income development on the south side of Chicago. In-depth interviews have been conducted with 46 residents of the development, including 23 former public housing residents. Interviews were also conducted with a comparison group of 69 public housing residents who did not move to the development. I find that …

Through The Wild Cathedral Evening: Barriers, Attitudes, Participatory Democracy, Professor Tenbroek, And The Rights Of Persons With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

This article is a commentary on Michael Ashley Stein & Janet Lord, Jacobus TenBroek, Participatory Justice, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, - Tex. J. Civ Lib. & Civ. Rts. - (2008) (in press). In it, I seek to expand their analysis of the new UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in an effort to invigorate an area of institutionalized patients rights law that is now nearly forgotten: the rights of such persons to exercise civil rights while institutionalized. I also argue that Prof. Stein and Ms. Lord's paper should lead us …

International Legal Practice Involving England And New York Following Adoption Of The United Kingdom Legal Services Act Of 2007, Sydney M. Cone Iii. Jan 2008

International Legal Practice Involving England And New York Following Adoption Of The United Kingdom Legal Services Act Of 2007, Sydney M. Cone Iii.

Articles & Chapters

This article deals with the regulation of legal services in England and New York in the context of, first, multidisciplinary practice ("MDP")1 and, second, permitted investment in legal practice. The article summarizes both the background of and potential differences between the regulations in those two jurisdictions, and comments on the possible reconciliation of those differences. Because, chronologically, New York was the first of the two jurisdictions under consideration to adopt rules on MDP, the New York rules will be considered first, and the more recent statute, known as the United Kingdom Legal Services Act 2007 2(hereinafter "U.K. Act"), will then …

Everybody Is Making Love/Or Else Expecting Rain: Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2008

Everybody Is Making Love/Or Else Expecting Rain: Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

One of the most controversial policy questions in all of institutional mental disability law is the extent to which patients in psychiatric hospitals have a right to voluntary sexual interaction. The resolution of this matter involves the resolution of difficult and sensitive questions of law, social policy, clinical judgment, politics, religion, and family structures.

As difficult as these questions are in cases involving civil hospitals, the difficulties are exacerbated when the topic is the application of the right in forensic hospitals. Such facilities typically house individuals involved in the criminal justice system (either those who may be incompetent to stand …

The Class Action Fairness Act In Perspective: The Old And The New In Federal Jurisdictional Reform, Edward A. Purcell Jr. Jan 2008

The Class Action Fairness Act In Perspective: The Old And The New In Federal Jurisdictional Reform, Edward A. Purcell Jr.

Articles & Chapters

The Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 (CAFA) was the product of an extended and well-organized political campaign. In Congress, its passage required a grinding eight-year effort, several modifications to the original proposal, numerous committee hearings, multiple reports by both Houses, political compromises that drew some Democratic support, two unsuccessful attempts to terminate debate in the Senate by imposing cloture, and strenuous efforts to amend in both the House and Senate when the bill came to the floor for a final vote. Passage also required Republican control of both Houses of Congress and the presidency as well.

Baby, Look Inside Your Mirror: The Legal Profession's Willful And Sanist Blindness To Lawyers With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2008

Baby, Look Inside Your Mirror: The Legal Profession's Willful And Sanist Blindness To Lawyers With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

The legal profession has notoriously ignored the reality that a significant number of its members exhibit signs of serious mental illness (and become addicted or habituated to drugs or alcohol at levels that are statistically significantly elevated from levels of the public at large). This is no longer news. What has not been explored is why so much of the bar has remained willfully ignorant of these realities, and why it refuses to confront the depths of this problem.

The roots of this puzzle are found in the social attitude of sanism, an irrational prejudice of the same quality and …

Killing Them Softly: Meditations On A Painful Punishment Of Death, Robert I. Blecker Jan 2008

Killing Them Softly: Meditations On A Painful Punishment Of Death, Robert I. Blecker

Articles & Chapters

This brief essay argues that any attempt by the U.S. Supreme Court and others to establish a painless punishment, especially lethal injection, fails logically and morally.

From the beginning, by definition, etymologically and existentially, “punishment” and “pain” have been inseparably connected. Those who advocate ‘painless punishment’ call for contradiction. Whether looking to the future (utilitarians) or the past (retributivists), we once clearly understood and embraced the inseparable connection between punishment and pain. Gradually, however, punishment has morphed into something which denies its own nature, culminating in today's move toward a massive dose of anesthetic as the ultimate punishment - as …
