Teaching And Assessment Of Students Taking A First Year, Level 7 Subject: Analysis And Actions, Aidan O'Dwyer

Conference papers

This contribution critically analyses the teaching and assessment strategies used on the core Electrical Systems subject in the first year of a three-year, Level 7, degree programme in Electrical Engineering at Dublin Institute of Technology. The author has the responsibility for development and instruction in the subject since 2004. In the 2004-5 and 2005-6 academic years, the didactic teaching approach and the assessment strategy ensured good educational outcomes. This was not the case in the 2006-7 academic year. The contribution will analyse the reasons for this, taking an evidence-based approach (i.e. analysing the assessment data in detail). Two conclusions that …

Sequence Analysis Based Dsp Controller For Dynamic Voltage Restorer (Dvr), N. G. Jayanti, Malabika Basu, Iurie Axente, Kevin Gaughan, Michael F. Conlon

Conference papers

The paper examines the behaviour of a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) under balanced/unbalanced supply voltage sag condition, and restricted DVR injection capability (e.g. limited to 50% of the supply voltage injection). Sequence components of the supply voltage are extracted to generate the reference injected voltage for the DVR. The control determines the maximum possible positive sequence injection within the capacity of the compensator to achieve balanced voltage conditions at the load terminals. The control is verified through simulation and experimentation. The control algorithm has been implemented in a TI320F2812 fixed point DSP and the effectiveness of the controller is verified …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Sıcak Çermik, Delikkaya and Sarıkaya are important travertine fields with active hot springs located 31 km west of Sivas. Based on their morphology, most of the travertines are classified as fissure-ridge travertines. Eroded sheet-type, terraced, and self-built channel types of travertine are also present at a few locations. Faults and fissures formed in the underlying İncesu Formation, and fissures developing in the fissure-ridge travertines are linked to one another. Tectonic deformation forming the fissure-ridge travertines resulted from NE-SW extension associated with a NW-SE compressional regime related to the Central Anatolian Thrust Belt and Sivas Backthrust. U/Th series age dating results …

Herbaceous Plant Cover Establishment In A Barren Materials Quarry, Nikolaos Arambatzis, Kitikidou Kyriaki

Turkish Journal of Botany

The ability to establish cover using grass and legume species without any soil preparation was studied in a barren materials quarry. The biodiversity indexes (Simpson) during the growing season as well as the vegetation cover and composition were measured. The results showed that the established species had a satisfactory cover (up to 87.5%). This means that we can achieve significant soil rehabilitation after mining using herbaceous plant cover and reduce the cost of rehabilitation by cutting the expenses of soil preparation.

The After-Shocks Of Twombly: Will We "Notice" Pleading Changes?, Ettie Ward Jan 2008

The After-Shocks Of Twombly: Will We "Notice" Pleading Changes?, Ettie Ward

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Part I will briefly discuss the pre-Twombly view of notice pleadings. To some extent, our understanding of what the rules required and what lawyers actually did was a romanticized view of pleading. Actual pleadings were rarely as "barebones" as we imagine. Further, in recent decades, rules, statutes, court decisions, and practical considerations have further eroded the notice pleading construct.

Part II will give a brief synopsis of the Twombly decision and then discuss the majority and dissent's views on pleadings generally.

Part III will examine selected cases post-Twombly and make some general observations and predictions as to …

Behold Thy Doom Is Mine: The Evolution Of Guinevere In The Eorks Of Chrétien De Troyes, Sir Thomas Malory, And Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Stephanie R. Comer Jan 2008

Behold Thy Doom Is Mine: The Evolution Of Guinevere In The Eorks Of Chrétien De Troyes, Sir Thomas Malory, And Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Stephanie R. Comer

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Guinevere has existed in literature for nearly a millennium, evolving to suit societal values and mores. She has metamorphosed from Arthur’s noble queen to Lancelot’s jealous lover, from a motherly sovereign to a vindictive adulteress as each author struggled to apply his own literary and societal conventions to a character that is both inherited and created.

In addressing the evolution of Guinevere, this thesis has followed her progression through three works: The Knight of the Cart by Chrétien de Troyes, Le Morte d’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory, and The Idylls of the King by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In addition, this …

The Meaning Of Natural Environment Occupations: Exploring The Experiences Of Sierra Club Members, Tulin Roselynn Ture Jan 2008

The Meaning Of Natural Environment Occupations: Exploring The Experiences Of Sierra Club Members, Tulin Roselynn Ture

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Poets and writers have long lauded the beauty and necessity of nature. More recent literature and research has provided support for the healthful benefits of the natural environment. This literature spans the breadth of many disciplines. Yet, very little occupational therapy literature focuses on the natural environment. This is somewhat surprising given occupational therapy’s focus on space and place.

This thesis explores the experience of participation in natural environment occupations by adult members of the Sierra Club. Five Sierra Club members were interviewed and two local Sierra Club outings were observed. Qualitative data analysis revealed two major themes: childhood beginnings …

In light of the growing prevalence of dysphagic patients on Speech-Language Pathologists’ caseloads and the frequent prescription of thickened liquids as a treatment strategy (Garcia, Chambers & Molander, 2005; Low, Wyles, Wilkinson & Sainsbury, 2001; Robbins, Nicosia, Hind, Gill, Blanco, & Logemann, 2002), our limited understanding of the factors that contribute to patient adherence presents a significant challenge to the management of dysphagia. The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the decisions patients make regarding dysphagia recommendations. Drawing upon adherence/compliance research from the field of behavioral medicine, the results of this study revealed a complex interplay of …

Laser Surface Thermal Lensing (Stl): An Optical Method For Surface Analysis Of Glass Transition Effects In Transparent Polymers, Nandita Prasad Jan 2008

Laser Surface Thermal Lensing (Stl): An Optical Method For Surface Analysis Of Glass Transition Effects In Transparent Polymers, Nandita Prasad

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Absorption of energy from a modulated laser beam by a transparent substrate leads to cyclic thermal expansion and contraction of the surface at the pump beam focus. This minute distortion of the surface forms a transient optical lens structure, which can be monitored by the changes it induces in a second laser beam reflected at an angle off the same focal point. The Surface Thermal Lensing (STL) technique is based on detecting the modulated interference pattern that results from interaction of the probe beam wavefront as it reflects from both the flat surface surrounding the transient lens and the curved …

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of dithiocarbamate ligands were formed on the Au surface of an interdigitated electrode (IDE) array by reaction of amines with CS2 in H2O/CH3OH solutions. Impedance spectroscopy was used to probe for the presence of each SAM as they were individually applied to the surface of the IDE by examining differences in collected impedance data after each step of the chemical application sequence. The impedance behavior of the SAM’s were then studied in the presence of aqueous Cu2+ and Mg2+ ions. A treated IDE array would, in theory, be able to preferentially …

Net Investment And Disaggregated Investment Demand Functions, Conan Gray Baldwin Jan 2008

Net Investment And Disaggregated Investment Demand Functions, Conan Gray Baldwin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Few topics in the field of economics have been as extensively researched as private business fixed investment. This paper examines investment using regression analysis and descriptive statistics. This study focuses on investment in structures and investment, with these two broad categories ultimately being further disaggregated into eleven relatively narrow categories.

The approach to modeling investment taken in this paper differs from the approach typically seen in economic literature in three important ways: this paper models net, rather than gross, investment; this paper uses a broad general econometric model, rather than a narrow theoretical model like the majority of papers modeling …
