Radically American: John Dos Passos, Culture And Politics, Alice Béja
Radically American: John Dos Passos, Culture And Politics, Alice Béja
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This essay takes the well-known and near-canonical figure of John Dos Passos, considering his own claims to a form of radicalism independent of political parties and their perceived ideological rigidity. Drawing upon documentary and non-fiction writings, the essay evaluates the writer’s negotiations of radicalism within the constraints of a so-called national political character.

L'America: Woman, Artist, Landscape - Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keeffe And Emily Carr, Painters As Theorists Of The National Imaginary, Paula Rabinowitz
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Visual artists are open to assessment as progressive public intellectuals. Drawing on three case studies – Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe and Emily Carr – this essay considers the strategies of rhetoric and (self)-representation used to position the artist as a personification of a range of political and social identities, including historically specific forms of nationalism.
Morris Ernst's Troubled Legacy, Brett Gary
Morris Ernst's Troubled Legacy, Brett Gary
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Examining the contradictory life of the important legal activist Morris Ernst, this essay repositions its subject as one of the most significant public intellectuals of the 1920s and 1930s. Yet the intellectual independence demonstrated by Ernst is shown to have been compromised through his post-war collaboration with the F.B.I.
Intellectual Influences On The New Left In America: C Wright Mills And Herbert Marcuse, James Panton
Intellectual Influences On The New Left In America: C Wright Mills And Herbert Marcuse, James Panton
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The commonalities between C. Wright Mills and Herbert Marcuse – both social theorists who enjoyed a considerable public audience – are charted in this essay. Despite apparent fundamental differences over Marxism and "Big Theory", their parallel theoretical engagements with the linked questions of post-war political agency and the impact of U.S. mass media, are mapped out. A specific limitation of their "New Left" philosophies and politics is each thinker's problematic tendency to locate potential "freedom" in an increasingly narrow "private" sphere.

On Abdul R. Janmohamed's The Death-Bound-Subject: Richard Wright's Archaeology Of Death, George Ciccariello-Maher
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Many social theorists erroneously set out from the universal only to have their theories dashed on the rocks of the particular. This tends especially to be the case with a particular as pronounced and stubborn as is the experience of Black America. So it is especially welcome that Abdul JanMohamed sets out explicitly and ambitiously to invert this trend, approaching the subjective effects of death not by way of a movement from universal to particular, but rather by first understanding the particularities of the Black experience of the threat of death in the United States. That is, JanMohamed …

Cuba: Before The Hype: A Review Of !Cuba: Art And History From 1868 To Today, Gail Gelburd
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
When the Iron Curtain was thrown open, it revealed a treasure trove of cutting edge art in Cuba. The multimedia Post-Modern expressions quickly found their way into the New York galleries as well as those in Spain, London and France. Simultaneously, the Havana Biennales brought critics, curators and connoisseurs to Cuba to see their work; Cuban art reached a new stage of excitement and "hype". The world soon realized that the angst of politics, coupled by innovation, facilitated by the scarcity of materials, created an art with a profound commitment to intellectualization and relevance. The exhibition, States of …
Facing The Future After Richard Wright [Special Section Introduction], Graham Barnfield, Victor Cohen, Joseph G. Ramsey
Facing The Future After Richard Wright [Special Section Introduction], Graham Barnfield, Victor Cohen, Joseph G. Ramsey
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
In 2005, we seized an opportunity for a new publication marking the anniversaries of two significant works of cultural history, Alan Wald's The New York Intellectuals and The Cultural Front by Michael Denning. The latter work was approaching its tenth anniversary at the time and seemed to us to call for revisiting and revaluation. Simultaneously, we noted that the former work had surfaced as a reference point in hostile attempts to make sense of Bush administration neoconservative foreign policy, against a broader backdrop of intellectual realignment over the question of the "war on terror." Combining this "calendar story" …
The Spot In The Mirror: The Role Of Gender In Richard Wright's Black Boy, Linda Chavers
The Spot In The Mirror: The Role Of Gender In Richard Wright's Black Boy, Linda Chavers
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
An autobiography can invite readers to hold an author to account for a story's themes, by separating truthful components of the narrative from their fictional counterparts. Richard Wright's very act of writing down his "life" means there's some self-mythologizing occurring, as the author chooses what to keep, what to omit and what to exaggerate in order to convey his character. This construction of self also shows some of the limitations of the author's struggle against racism, through his implied complicity in women's oppression as he presents a pattern of pseudo-rebellion against restrictive female figures in the lives of his male …
Review Of The Amazing, Transforming Superhero!: Essays On The Revision Of Characters In Comic Books, Film And Television, Edited By Terrence R. Wandtke, Christian L. Pyle
Review Of The Amazing, Transforming Superhero!: Essays On The Revision Of Characters In Comic Books, Film And Television, Edited By Terrence R. Wandtke, Christian L. Pyle
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Like all popular culture, superheroes reflect the attitudes, myths, and fears of their times. As a result, superheroes who enjoy longevity are periodically revised to keep step with changes in society. For example, a survey of the comic-book history of Batman (in continuous publication since 1939) would show significant changes in the series every five to ten years. In the introduction to this collection of essays on revisionism and superheroes, Terrence R. Wandtke argues that such revision cannot be called "evolution" as it is not linear. He categorizes four types of revisionism: additive (making small additions that enhance …

Resistance Of Different Tomato Varieties (Lycopersicon Esculentum) To Late Blight (Phytophthora Infestans) In Laboratory Conditions At Uac Carmen Pampa, In The Province Of Nor Yungas, Department Of La Paz, Andrez Faustino Florez Paxi
Theses and Dissertations
In order to respond to the low economic and harvesting yields caused by diseases that attack the tomato, we considered using tomato varieties resistant to late blight (Phytophthora infestans) of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and potato (Solanum tuberosum). The evaluation of the percentage of infestation was performed with tomato leaflets over a 168 hour period. The percentage of infestation was recorded every eight hours from the time of inoculation until maximum infestation was reached. The methodology applied was at random and included six treatments and five replications. The experiment consisted of collecting healthy leaflets from five improved varieties and one local …

Notes On The Multiple Facets Of Immigration Federalism, Rick Su
Notes On The Multiple Facets Of Immigration Federalism, Rick Su
Journal Articles
This symposium essay takes as its starting point the contestable position that some degree of immigration federalism is both constitutionally permissible and politically desirable. It suggests, however, that liberating the issue of immigration from the shadows of federal exclusivity does not necessarily tell us much about what a conceptual framework or legal jurisprudence of immigration federalism should or will actually be like. This is not solely a function of the difficulties inherent in incorporating principles of federalism into what is usually understood to be an exclusive federal field of immigration. Rather, it is also a consequence of the rifts and …
A Localist Reading Of Local Immigration Regulations, Rick Su
A Localist Reading Of Local Immigration Regulations, Rick Su
Journal Articles
The conventional account of immigration-related activity at the local level often assumes that the "local" is simply a new battleground in the national immigration debates. This article questions that presumption. Foregrounding the legal rules that define local governments and channels local action, this article argues that the local immigration "crisis" is much less a consequence of federal immigration policy than normally assumed. Rather, it can also be understood as a familiar byproduct of localism: the legal and cultural assumptions that shape how we structure and organize local communities, provide and allocate local services, and define the legal relationship of local, …

Section 524(G) Without Compromise: Voting Rights And The Asbestos Bankruptcy Paradox, S. Todd Brown
Journal Articles
Section 524(g) of the Bankruptcy Code was adopted to protect unknown future asbestos personal injury victims' rights and prospects for financial recovery. To serve these goals and satisfy the demands of due process, Section 524(g) provides two basic forms of virtual representation for future victims - requiring the appointment of an independent legal representative and aligning the interests of future victims with current claimants (75% of whom must approve any plan that invokes Section 524(g)). In recent years, however, the 75% super-majority vote requirement has been transformed into a veto power wielded by a small group of law firms, who …
Advertising And The Transformation Of Trademark Law, Mark Bartholomew
Advertising And The Transformation Of Trademark Law, Mark Bartholomew
Journal Articles
Despite the presence of a vigorous debate over the proper scope of trademark protection, scholars have largely ignored study of trademark law's origins. It would be a mistake, however, to ignore the history behind trademark law. Scrutiny of the formative era in American trademark law yields two important conclusions. First, courts granted robust legal protection to trademark holders in the early twentieth century because they accepted the benign view of advertising presented to them by advertisers. As advertising became linked to cultural progress and social cohesion, courts adopted doctrinal revisions to protect advertising's value that remain embedded in modern trademark …

Victims And The Significance Of Causing Harm, Guyora Binder
Victims And The Significance Of Causing Harm, Guyora Binder
Journal Articles
Many criminal law theorists find the punishment of harm puzzling. They argue that acts should be evaluated only on the basis of the risks they create and the actors' awareness of those risks; that punishing results violates both desert and utility. This article explains punishment of harm on the basis of political theory rather than moral philosophy. Punishing harm helps legitimize the rule of law by vindicating victims. A rule of law state precludes cycles of organized retaliatory violence by asserting a monopoly on retaliatory force, thereby depriving individuals and groups of the option of securing their own dignity. We …
"Everybody Loves Trees": Policing American Cities Through Street Trees, Irus Braverman
"Everybody Loves Trees": Policing American Cities Through Street Trees, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
Recently, municipalities have been investing large sums of money as well as much bureaucratic and professional effort into making their cities not only a more "treefull" place, but also a place that surveys, measures, regulates, and manages its trees. This article explores the transformation of the utilitarian discourse on trees, which focuses on the benefits of trees and greenery, into a normative discourse whereby trees are not only considered good but are also represented as if they are or should be loved by everybody. This transformation is not only the result of top-down governmental policies. It is also a consequence …
Governing Certain Things: The Regulation Of Street Trees In Four North American Cities, Irus Braverman
Governing Certain Things: The Regulation Of Street Trees In Four North American Cities, Irus Braverman
Journal Articles
Most sociolegal studies of the urban street focus on the human element. By focusing on the tree, my Article offers a unique perspective on the interrelations between various actors within the public spaces of modern North American cities. Situated at the intersection of legal geography, anthropology, and Science and Technology Studies, this Article demonstrates how natural artifacts function as technologies of governance, thereby masking crucial political interventions behind a natural facade. The tensions between nature and the city, as embedded in both the construction and the regulation of street trees, provide an unusual perspective on the management of urban populations …

Robot Controller Architecture: Layered Mode Selection Logic With Fuzzy Sensor Fusion Network, Traig E.B. Born
Theses and Dissertations
A behavior based robot controller was implemented using Layered Mode Selection Logic as a behavior coordination mechanism and a Fuzzy Sensor Fusion Network to provide perception. A series of collision experiments were conducted to create a Fuzzy Sensor Fusion Network capable of detecting collisions using acceleration readings from wheel encoders. An obstacle avoidance behavior was created, and it was demonstrated that the robot could be constrained by movable obstacles. The avoidance behavior was modified to create an obstacle manipulation behavior. This behavior allowed the robot to escape when enclosed by movable obstacles. The fuzzy sensor fusion network was enhanced to …

Self-Reported Listening Strategies By Students In An Intensive English Language Program, Holly Montgomery
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to add to knowledge about cognitive and metacognitive listening strategies by second language learners. A survey was developed and administered in which questions solicited a retrospective self-report of students' listening habits. The listening strategies used for this study are limited to main idea identification and translation, because they succinctly exemplify the broad groups of strategies to which they belong. Respective sections of the questionnaire address academic, authentic, and informal listening contexts, in order to isolate and differentiate between the strategies' reported use in each, revealing discrepancies and similarities between reports of strategy use in …
A Correlational Study Of Standardized Test For The Assessment Of Reading (Star) With The Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (Tcap) On Third Grade Reading/Language Arts, Terri Kay Pike

Network Security In Two-Year Colleges, Tamya Jean Stallings
Theses and Dissertations
Network security has become a growing challenge in industry and education. With the increase of viruses, spam, hackers, and identity theft, organizations are beginning to look at areas to improve the protection of their Information Technology structure. Higher Education has the highest vulnerability to network security threats especially the two-year institutions. Two-year institutions are known for open access admission. Open labs, limited staff and resources hinder security measures for these institutions. This thesis focuses on the two-year institution delving into the Information Technology Departments and how security is handled. What challenges have these institutions faced trying to protect data and …

Impact Of Comorbidity In Prevention Of Adolescent Depressive Symptoms., Patrick Pössel, Simone Seemann, Martin Hautzinger
Impact Of Comorbidity In Prevention Of Adolescent Depressive Symptoms., Patrick Pössel, Simone Seemann, Martin Hautzinger
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Despite the well-known relevance of comorbidity, few studies have examined the impact of comorbid anxiety or externalizing symptoms on the prevention of depressive symptoms in adolescents. To replicate earlier positive effects of a cognitive-behavioral prevention program of depressive symptoms and to test the hypothesis that the prevention program would be less effective in adolescents with comorbid anxiety and externalizing symptoms, a study was conducted involving 301 8th-grade students, randomly divided into an intervention group and a non-intervention control group. The randomized design included baseline, post-intervention, and 6-month follow-up. The prevention program included 10 sessions held in a regular school setting. …
