Other Nanotechnology Publications
Often one needs to calculate the evolution time of a state under a Hamiltonian with no explicit time dependence when only numerical methods are available. In cases such as this, the usual application of Fermi’s golden rule and firstorder perturbation theory is inadequate as well as being computationally inconvenient. Instead, what one needs are conditions under which the evolution time may be obtained from the easily calculated energy uncertainty. This work derives some general conditions for obtaining the evolution time from the energy uncertainty.

Semantic Role Agency In Perceptions Of The Lexical Items Sick And Evil, Nathan G. Simmons
Semantic Role Agency In Perceptions Of The Lexical Items Sick And Evil, Nathan G. Simmons
Theses and Dissertations
Inspired by an ongoing debate in the clinical sciences concerning the value of evil as a label for human behavior (Mowrer 1960, Staub 1999, Wellman 2000, Williams 2004 etc.), this thesis examines the semantic role of AGENT in the lexical items sick and evil. Williams makes the argument that the label evil removes responsibility from the doctor, whereas, the label sick empowers the doctor in bringing about a cure. While this view is not universally accepted in the field, it does bring to light an interesting question in applied linguistic semantics as to the assignment of agency with respect to …

Empirical Two-Point Α-Mixing Model For Calibrating The Ech2o Ec-5 Soil Moisture Sensor In Sands, Toshihiro Sakaki, Anuchit Limsuwat, Kathleen M. Smits, Tissa H. Illangasekare

Recently improved ECH2O soil moisture sensors have received significant attention in many field and laboratory applications. Focusing on the EC-5 sensor, a simple and robust calibration method is proposed. The sensor-to-sensor variability in the readings (analog-to-digital converter (ADC) counts) among 30 EC-5 sensors was relatively small but not negligible. A large number of ADC counts were taken under various volumetric water contents (?) using four test sands. The proposed two-point a-mixing model, as well as linear and quadratic models, was fitted to the ADC – ? data. Unlike for conventional TDR measurements, the effect of sensor characteristics is lumped into …

Impact Of Offshore Outsourcing On Competitive Advantage Of U.S. Multinational Corporations, Yoram Benit
Impact Of Offshore Outsourcing On Competitive Advantage Of U.S. Multinational Corporations, Yoram Benit
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Offshore outsourcing became a common business practice by most U.S. and Western businesses after the Internet became viable. It is expected that by 2015 the U.S. market will outsource 3.3 million employment opportunities and will pay an estimated $136 billion in salaries to Asian countries (Hemphill, 2004). Outsourcing became a necessity for corporations to reduce cost and maintain competitiveness in the marketplace, but its effectiveness in achieving superior performance and competitive advantage needs to be explored.
The relationship among offshore outsourcing, market freedom, and competitive advantage is an important issue for multinational corporations to conduct business and gain competitive advantage. …

Interview No. 1416, Antonio Nuño Gonzáles
Combined Interviews
Mr. Gonzáles talks about the bracero program as a means to achieving a better life for himself and his family, which is why he decided to enlist; to begin the process, he traveled to Empalme, Sonora, México, where he picked cotton to get the necessary papers; as part of the contracting process, he underwent medical exams, which he describes as rude, and they were much more thorough in Mexicali, Baja California, México; one of his brothers did not pass the exams because of his lungs, but he did labor in the fields of California with his eldest brother; Antonio worked …

Finding Recurrent Regions Of Copy Number Variation: A Review, Oscar M. Rueda, Ramon Diaz-Uriarte
Finding Recurrent Regions Of Copy Number Variation: A Review, Oscar M. Rueda, Ramon Diaz-Uriarte
COBRA Preprint Series
Copy number variation (CNV) in genomic DNA is linked to a variety of human diseases, and array-based CGH (aCGH) is currently the main technology to locate CNVs. Although many methods have been developed to analyze aCGH from a single array/subject, disease-critical genes are more likely to be found in regions that are common or recurrent among subjects. Unfortunately, finding recurrent CNV regions remains a challenge. We review existing methods for the identification of recurrent CNV regions. The working definition of ``common'' or ``recurrent'' region differs between methods, leading to approaches that use different types of input (discretized output from a …

An apparatus and method are herein disclosed which utilize a ratio based on a varied angle of incidence of light on an optical fiber analysis system. By calculating the ration of light incident on the sample element, variations in the system parameters which can provide deleterious effects are obviated.

Hardware Architectures And Implementations For Associative Memories : The Building Blocks Of Hierarchically Distributed Memories, Changjian Gao
Hardware Architectures And Implementations For Associative Memories : The Building Blocks Of Hierarchically Distributed Memories, Changjian Gao
Dissertations and Theses
During the past several decades, the semiconductor industry has grown into a global industry with revenues around $300 billion. Intel no longer relies on only transistor scaling for higher CPU performance, but instead, focuses more on multiple cores on a single die. It has been projected that in 2016 most CMOS circuits will be manufactured with 22 nm process. The CMOS circuits will have a large number of defects. Especially when the transistor goes below sub-micron, the original deterministic circuits will start having probabilistic characteristics. Hence, it would be challenging to map traditional computational models onto probabilistic circuits, suggesting a …
