Glacier, Fjord, And Seismic Response To Recent Large Calving Events, Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, Jason M. Amundson, M. Truffer, M. P. Luthi, M. Fahnestock, M. West, R. J. Motyka
Faculty, Staff, and Students
The recent loss of Jakobshavn Isbræ’s extensive floating ice tongue has been accompanied by a change in near terminus behavior. Calving currently occurs primarily in summer from a grounded terminus, involves the detachment and overturning of several icebergs within 30 – 60 min, and produces long-lasting and far-reaching ocean waves and seismic signals, including ‘‘glacial earthquakes’’. Calving also increases near-terminus glacier velocities by 3% but does not cause episodic rapid glacier slip, thereby contradicting the originally proposed glacial earthquake mechanism. We propose that the earthquakes are instead caused by icebergs scraping the fjord bottom during calving.

Dioup, Mouhamadou, Bronx African American History Project
Oral Histories
Dioup is a Senegalese citizen who came to the United States when he was twenty years old. Dioup speaks briefly about what motivated his decision to come to the United States as opposed to France. According to Dioup, the benefit of going to France is of course the shared language. Since Senegal is a francophone country, it wouldn’t have been much of a culture shock for him to relocate o France. However, to things discouraged a move to France. The first is the large degree of discrimination and racial harassment within the country. The second is their music scene. Dioup …

INTERVIEWEE: Manadou Khoule (aka DJ Khoule)
SUMMARY BY: Patrick O’Donnell
Note: This interview was originally conducted in French and translated into English.
Born in Dakar, Senegal, Manadou Khoule (aka DJ Khoule) came to the United States in 2000, when he was 20 years old. At the time that he emigrated, he was the best DJ in Senegal. Most of his influences were Western hip-hop, especially the work of Tupac Shakur. He got his first set of turntables when he was 15 years old—they were given to him by a local community center. He does not …

GIS Day
This is the lead document from a hands-on workshop held on November 18, 2008 at Purdue University Libraries. The session led participants through the creation of an online map mashup. Mashups are all the rage, of course (or have been since ~2005, anyway), and the tools available to make them have increased almost exponentially. This document walks through the basics of the mashup, with a look at Google Maps, Yahoo! Pipes, and OpenLayers, then proceeds to step through the process of creating one's own. The objectives of the session were as follows:
create a simple map mashup using tabular data …

Can Genetically Engineered Nutraceuticals Win Back Skeptical Consumers?, Karoline Kastanek, Emie Yiannaka
Cornhusker Economics
The unexpected (to many) consumer resistance to the first generation genetically modified (GM) food products that focused on producers, and aimed at increasing yields, hurt the prospects of the agricultural biotechnology sector. As a response and in an effort to win back skeptical consumers, agricultural biotechnology firms started working on food products with functional properties desirable to consumers, that are commonly known as second generation GM products. Food products in this category include vitamin A enriched rice and maize (golden rice and golden maize), high protein wheat, and high oleic soybean oil, to name a few. Recently, a new generation …

The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Enters Albania, 1992-1999, Nathan D. Pali
Theses and Dissertations
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints entered Albania in 1992. Albania was a unique and difficult place to establish the LDS Church. Under the communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha religion was systematically eliminated from Albania and replaced with atheism. Additionally, missionaries were twice evacuated in the first decade in the country and the Book of Mormon was not available in Albanian until 1999. Despite these setbacks the LDS Church grew at a steady rate in Albania due to native Albanian interest and individual attention by missionaries.
