The Epistemic Necessity And Ethical Permissibility Of Randomized Clinical Trials: A Minimalist Defense, Matthew A. Schuh, Sr. Nov 2008

The Epistemic Necessity And Ethical Permissibility Of Randomized Clinical Trials: A Minimalist Defense, Matthew A. Schuh, Sr.

Open Access Dissertations

I argue for two main theses that are at odds with the positions of many clinical researchers and philosophers who write on the ethics of clinical research. The first is that certain types of clinical trials, namely, randomized clinical trials with double or triple blinding and a placebo group are generally necessary to establish that a medical intervention is effective in treating a certain type of disease or disorder. The second main thesis is that such trials are generally not ethically impermissible. My minimalist defense of clinical trials differs from most defenses of clinical trials found in the literature. I …

Extended Time Off Overview, Workplace Flexibility 2010, Georgetown University Law Center

Memos and Fact Sheets

Workplace Flexibility 2010 defines Extended Time Off (EXTO) as time taken off from work for a single reason that extends for more than five days but less than one year.

EXTO may be brief in nature (e.g., a few weeks), when taken, for example, for a vacation, to recover from minor surgery, or to comply with a public health quarantine request. EXTO may also be longer in nature (e.g., a month or more), when taken, for example, for maternity/paternity purposes, for elder care, for military duty, or for a sabbatical from work.

EXTO (either brief or prolonged) may be unpaid …

Showcasing Student, Faculty And Staff Publications: Promoting, Populating And Publishing In A Small Liberal Arts College Institutional Repository, Janet Sietmann, Teresa Fishel

Staff Publications

Institutional repositories are more than just a place to deposit faculty pre-prints, post-print, and OA articles. IRs offer colleges and universities an opportunity to showcase student senior theses, award winning papers, and student peer-reviewed journals. We have also found that IRs can provide a means of distributing campus publications in an open access environment. What began as a solution for managing student honor theses has expanded to include three student peer-reviewed journals, a campus alumni publication, and the entire series of publications for our Institute for Global Citizenship. Using the bepress software in DigitalCommons, the Macalester College library has taken …

Domain Compliance And Elastic Power Transmission In Rotary F(O)F(1)-Atpase., Hendrik Sielaff, Henning Rennekamp, André Wächter, Hao Xie, Florian Hilbers, Katrin Feldbauer, Stanley D Dunn, Siegfried Engelbrecht, Wolfgang Junge

Biochemistry Publications

The 2 nanomotors of rotary ATP synthase, ionmotive F(O) and chemically active F(1), are mechanically coupled by a central rotor and an eccentric bearing. Both motors rotate, with 3 steps in F(1) and 10-15 in F(O). Simulation by statistical mechanics has revealed that an elastic power transmission is required for a high rate of coupled turnover. Here, we investigate the distribution in the F(O)F(1) structure of compliant and stiff domains. The compliance of certain domains was restricted by engineered disulfide bridges between rotor and stator, and the torsional stiffness (kappa) of unrestricted domains was determined by analyzing their thermal rotary …
