Immunomodulatory Effect Of Coconut Protein On Cyclophosphamide Induced Immune Suppressed Swiss Albino Mice, A. Geo Vigila, X. Baskaran Dec 2008

Immunomodulatory Effect Of Coconut Protein On Cyclophosphamide Induced Immune Suppressed Swiss Albino Mice, A. Geo Vigila, X. Baskaran

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The immunomodulatory properties of coconut protein were investigated in Swiss albino mice by immune suppressed with cyclophosphamide (CP). CP is a commonly used anti-cancer drug which causes toxicity by its reactive metabolites such as acrolein and phosphoramide mustard. In this study, the animals were grouped into four of 6 mice per group. Assessment of immunomodulatory activity was carried out by testing the RBC, WBC, Platelet and differential counts. Orally administered coconut protein in CP treated animals showed the increased levels of RBC, WBC and Platelet counts. The results of treated groups were RBC (1.84 mm3), WBC (5720.84 mm …

Investigation Of Phytochemical Profile And Antibacterial Potential Of Ethanolic Leaf Extract Of Prosopis Juliflora Dc., M. Sathiya, K. Muthuchelian

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Prosopis juliflora DC. is commonly known as "mesquite". This tree is native to tropical America, but is naturalized in many countries including Egypt and India. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the leaves revealed the presence of tannins, acids, glycosides, flavonoids and alkaloids. In vitro antibacterial studies on the ethanolic leaf extracts were carried out on ten medically important bacterial strains (Salmonella typimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Psudomonas sp., Staphylococcus epidermis, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococccus sp. and Bacillus subtilis) procured from the Microbial Type Culture and Collection, Chandigarh, India, using the agar disc diffusion method. The …

Decision Combining In Relay Networks, Sharmin R. Ara, R. Viswanathan Dec 2008

Decision Combining In Relay Networks, Sharmin R. Ara, R. Viswanathan

Conference Proceedings

We consider non-coherent detection of M-ary FSK modulated signals transmitted over a slow, Rayleigh fading channel in a wireless relay network. The network consists of a single source-destination pair and a number of relays (L), which employ cooperative diversity. Performances of a counting rule and square law combiner are studied. We derive closed form expressions for probabilities of error for equal relay channel average SNR. For unequal relay channel SNRs, we resort to Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the error probabilities. We examine different combinations of M and L for a range of average SNR values. Although the …

The Bell System Divestiture: Background, Implementation, And Outcome, Joseph H. Weber

Federal Communications Law Journal

"The Enduring Lessons of the Breakup of AT&T: A Twenty-Five Year Retrospective."' Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on April 18-19, 2008.

By 1982, the Bell System had operated an integrated telecommunications network connecting almost everyone in the United States for almost 100 years. That system had been designed and operated as a monopoly, but by the 1960s, new technologies were being developed which led to pressure to allow competitive entry. After many incremental changes, the Bell System divestiture--complete separation of long-distance service and manufacturing fiom local service provision-was finally adopted as a way of implementing this …

Will Access Regulation Work?, Gerald R. Faulhaber

Federal Communications Law Journal

"The Enduring Lessons of the Breakup of AT&T: A Twenty-Five Year Retrospective."' Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on April 18-19, 2008.

The FCC is transitioning from a rate regulation regime to an access regime. A rate regulation regime gives all customers full access to network facilities (common carrier) at regulated rates-generally, rate base rate of return regulation. An access regime is one in which all competitors are given full access to incumbents' networks, with little or no retail rate regulation, thereby allowing competition (over incumbents' networks) to discipline the market. Is this a good idea? Is …

Federal Communications Law Journal

"The Enduring Lessons of the Breakup of AT&T: A Twenty-Five Year Retrospective."' Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on April 18-19, 2008.

In his luncheon talk at the conference, presented here in slightly revised form, Judge Posner discusses his personal involvement with the events that led up the Justice Department's major antitrust suit against AT&T that culminated in the breakup of the telephone monopoly. The stages of his involvement included participation in the work of President Johnson's Task Force on Communications Policy, consulting for AT&T in the lawsuit itself, and his negative advice to the chairman of …

The At&T Consent Decree: In Praise Of Interconnection Only, Richard A. Epstein

Federal Communications Law Journal

"The Enduring Lessons of the Breakup of AT&T: A Twenty-Five Year Retrospective."' Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on April 18-19, 2008.

This article examines the consequences of the Bell consent decree of 1982. In the short run, the decree sought to end the AT&T's Corporate domination of the telecommunications network. But it did so in an overambitious way that chose to break up the basic system into constituent parts even though the preferred remedy was a more modest initiative that would have opened the network up to interconnection by rival carriers. In charting the wrong path, …

Toward A Unified Theory Of Access To Local Telephone Networks, Daniel F. Spulber, Christopher S. Yoo Dec 2008

Toward A Unified Theory Of Access To Local Telephone Networks, Daniel F. Spulber, Christopher S. Yoo

Federal Communications Law Journal

"The Enduring Lessons of the Breakup of AT&T: A Twenty-Five Year Retrospective."' Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on April 18-19, 2008.

Over the past several decades, regulatory authorities have imposed an increasingly broad array of access requirements on local telephone providers. In so doing, policymakers typically applied previous approaches to access regulation without fully considering whether the regulatory justifications used in favor of those previous access requirements remained valid. They also allowed each access regime to be governed by a different pricing methodology and set access prices in a way that treated each network component as …

Reexamining The Legacy Of Dual Regulation: Reforming Dual Merger Review By The Doj And The Fcc, Philip J. Weiser Dec 2008

Reexamining The Legacy Of Dual Regulation: Reforming Dual Merger Review By The Doj And The Fcc, Philip J. Weiser

Federal Communications Law Journal

"The Enduring Lessons of the Breakup of AT&T: A Twenty-Five Year Retrospective."' Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on April 18-19, 2008.

A central challenge for competition policy merger review is to structure the analysis of merger remedies so that the antitrust agencies play an effective and central role, with regulatory agencies complementing-as opposed to overlapping or contradicting--their judgments. At present, the U.S. system sometimes veers towards a worst-case scenario where federal antitrust authorities-the FTC and DOJ-impose regulatory remedies that overlap with regulatory policy and regulatory agencies perform duplicative merger reviews and impose remedies unrelated to the …

Essential Facilities And Trinko: Should Antitrust And Regulation Be Combined?, Timothy J. Brennan Dec 2008

Essential Facilities And Trinko: Should Antitrust And Regulation Be Combined?, Timothy J. Brennan

Federal Communications Law Journal

"The Enduring Lessons of the Breakup of AT&T: A Twenty-Five Year Retrospective."' Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on April 18-19, 2008.

The Supreme Court's 2004 decision in Trinko represented a radical change from prior doctrine ensuring that antitrust laws applied in regulated industries. The change resulted from a failure to appreciate that regulation and antitrust can be complements. Regulation can boost the value of antitrust by creating incentives to refuse to deal in order to reap monopoly profit otherwise proscribed by regulation. Ironically, the essential facilities doctrine rejected by the Trinko court and the Trinko decision …

"Fleeting Expletives" Are The Tip Of The Iceberg: Fallout From Exposing The Arbitrary And Capricious Nature Of Indecency Regulation, Dave E. Hutchinson Dec 2008

"Fleeting Expletives" Are The Tip Of The Iceberg: Fallout From Exposing The Arbitrary And Capricious Nature Of Indecency Regulation, Dave E. Hutchinson

Federal Communications Law Journal

On November 4, 2008, the Supreme Court heard arguments in FCC v. Fox Television Stations, which centers on whether or the FCC's policy allowing fleeting expletives to be found actionably indecent is arbitrary and capricious. The Second Circuit found that the fleeting expletives policy is arbitrary and capricious as a matter of administrative law. The Supreme Court decision will provide much needed guidance for what constitutes a reasoned basis in the indecency regime's contextual approach. This Note argues that--despite the FCC's recognition that time and context changes the meaning of language-the FCC's indecency regime is at loggerheads with broadcasters because …

Are Regulators Forward-Looking? The Market Price Of Copper Versus The Regulated Price Of Mandatory Access To Unbundled Local Loops In Telecommunications Networks, Jerry A. Hausman, J. Gregory Sidak, Timothy J. Tardiff Dec 2008

Are Regulators Forward-Looking? The Market Price Of Copper Versus The Regulated Price Of Mandatory Access To Unbundled Local Loops In Telecommunications Networks, Jerry A. Hausman, J. Gregory Sidak, Timothy J. Tardiff

Federal Communications Law Journal

"The Enduring Lessons of the Breakup of AT&T: A Twenty-Five Year Retrospective."' Conference held at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on April 18-19, 2008.

Around the world, since 1996, regulators have mandated that incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) offer competitors access to their network at regulated prices that reflect forward-looking cost. Regulated prices for unbundled network elements are based on total element long-run incremental cost (TELRIC), which in turn is calculated using engineering models that estimate the costs of a hypothetical carrier employing the most efficient telecommunications technology currently available and the lowest cost network configuration, given the existing …

Leave Me Alone! The Delicate Balance Of Privacy And Commercial Speech In The Evolving Do-Not-Call Registry, Andrew L. Sullivant Dec 2008

Leave Me Alone! The Delicate Balance Of Privacy And Commercial Speech In The Evolving Do-Not-Call Registry, Andrew L. Sullivant

Federal Communications Law Journal

In 2004, the Tenth Circuit held that although the newly enacted do-not-call registry restricted commercial speech, the restriction was narrowly tailored and thus fell within the bounds of the Constitution. Since that decision, the Federal Trade Commission has amended the do-not-call registry to abolish the provision that required individuals to re-register every five years, and in 2008, Congress passed the amendment. This Note argues that the five-year reregistration requirement is a substantial factor in the registry's narrow tailoring. By removing the requirement, questions as to the restriction's constitutionality reemerge.

Grace Through Love : An Examination Of Milton's Monism, Mortalism, And The Puritan Ideals Of Desire As Reflected In Sonnet 23, Leslie Naomi Wyatt Dec 2008

Grace Through Love : An Examination Of Milton's Monism, Mortalism, And The Puritan Ideals Of Desire As Reflected In Sonnet 23, Leslie Naomi Wyatt

Master's Theses

This thesis examines Sonnet 23, especially in concern to: 1) Milton’s adherence to monism, a philosophical and theological position that he derived from his reading of Rabbinical approaches to the Old Testament; 2) His adherence to the related doctrine of mortalism, which held that death entailed the death, until resurrection of both body and soul; and 3) Milton’s interest in the way certain Puritan thinkers idealized desire for aspects of the world’s beauty, especially desire for one’s spouse, and how, particularly in the process of mourning, such desires could foster a stronger bond with God. The thesis also looks at …

The Endangered Representation Of Sexual Violence In Sarah Kane's Blasted, Dina Zhurba Dec 2008

The Endangered Representation Of Sexual Violence In Sarah Kane's Blasted, Dina Zhurba

Master's Theses

In Blasted, Kane represents how incidents of rape highlight, exacerbate and solidify the unevenness of power distribution between men and women in the modern world and provides a new perspective at what we might call “rape in general” – a transhistorical phenomenon of rape as a practice of violence towards the female victim. Through a detailed analysis of the unique representational circumstances of the multiple scenes of rape, such as Cate’s meaningful absence in Ian’s scene of rape, the author of the essay comes to a conclusion that rape is and remains an engendered practice. However, along with reaffirming …

The Reluctant Colonization Of The Falkland Islands, 1833-1851 : A Study Of British Imperialism In The Southwest Atlantic, Shannon Warnick Dec 2008

The Reluctant Colonization Of The Falkland Islands, 1833-1851 : A Study Of British Imperialism In The Southwest Atlantic, Shannon Warnick

Master's Theses

After the Napoleonic Wars, British leaders increasingly objected to large burdensome formal annexations. Hence, when South American markets opened in the 1820s British leaders considered using nearby island bases to ward off regional rivals. Britain therefore occupied the Falkland Islands in 1833. Despite governing the world’s strongest industrial and naval power however, British leaders neglected the Falklands’ progress as a colony from 1833 to 1851. Dogmatic faith in “efficiency” and free trade in the 1840s led to modest commercial progress by largely unfettered private interests in the islands, but led to little improvement in defense or society. This study uses …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Mercury and other contaminants in coastal and open-ocean ecosystems are an issue of great concern globally and in the United States, where consumption of marine fish and shellfish is a major route of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg). A recent National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences–Superfund Basic Research Program workshop titled “Fate and Bioavailability of Mercury in Aquatic Ecosystems and Effects on Human Exposure,” convened by the Dartmouth Toxic Metals Research Program on 15–16 November 2006 in Durham, New Hampshire, brought together human health experts, marine scientists, and ecotoxicologists to encourage cross-disciplinary discussion between ecosystem and human health scientists and …

Fatigue Risks In The Connections Of Sign Support Structures: Phase 1, Christopher Foley, Baolin Wan, Mathew Weglarz, Matthew Hellenthal, Jordan Komp, Andrew Smith, Joseph Schmidt

Transportation Reports with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation

Wisconsin sought to assess the risk of fatigue-induced fracture in its existing sign support structures designed before the latest AASHTO specifications that included fatigue design. A framework for assessing fatigue-induced fracture risk is developed and detailed synthesis of fatigue testing of connections is conducted. Statistical analysis of tests conducted since 1970 is made and models for characterizing uncertainty in the fatigue life of these connections are proposed. Recommendations regarding further fatigue testing (specimen configuration, number and stress range) are given. Statistical models for wind speed and direction are developed using historical records obtained through the National Climatic Data Center for …

Preparation Of Ultrafine Silver Powder Using Glycerol As Reducing Agent, E Nisaratanaporn, K Wongsuwan Dec 2008

Preparation Of Ultrafine Silver Powder Using Glycerol As Reducing Agent, E Nisaratanaporn, K Wongsuwan

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

The production of silver nanoparticles and sub-micron particles can be achieved by silver alkoxide from silver sulfate and subsequently reducing with glycerol. To reduce the particle size of silver sulfate precursors, ball milling was employed to reduce particle sizes down to 0.81 microns. However, silver sulfate without grinding provided smaller particle sizes of silver particles as opposed to ground specimens. Stirring silver alkoxide simultaneously was efficient to provide for uniform distribution of silver powder. The silver powder thus produced had brain-like shape consisted of very fine aggregate silver particles. The yield of silver powder was in the range of 95-99 …

Influence Of Reinforced Plastomers On Injection Moulds Wear, A Guzanová, J Brezinová

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

The contribution deals with wear of injection moulds based on aluminium alloy Alumec 89 in friction couples with plastomers reinforced with different glass fibres content. Friction relations in injection moulding were simulated by adhesion dry wear test with help of Amsler equipment with area contact of friction couple. Wear intensity was evaluated by friction coefficient and relative wear by weight loss. Simultaneously, changes of aluminium alloy surface morphology after wear in particular friction couples were analysed.
