Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (GlcNAc) is one of the basic constituents of mammal cartilage, which is known to help repair deteriorating cartilage and relieve pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis patients. The preparation of GlcNAc from squid pen β-chitin by using Aspergillus sp. chitinase in enzymatic hydrolysis is studied. The cultivation of the fungus in colloidal chitin minimum media at pH 3.5 and 40°C for 5 days gives the highest chitinolytic activity of 3.1 U/mL. The crude enzyme obtained from the the cultivation is used in the hydrolysis of milled squid pen β-chitin (50μm) at pH 4 (acetic acid 2M) and 45°C using 22 …

Factors Affecting Preparations Of Chitosan Microcapsules For Colonic Drug Delivery, K Huanbutta, M Luangtana-Anan, P Sriamornsak, S Limmatvapirat, S Puttipipatkhachorn, J Nunthanid

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

This work aimed at studying factors affecting preparations of chitosan microcapsules for colonic drug delivery. Chitosan microcores (CS, 45kDa, 87% degree of deacetylation) containing diclofenac sodium (DS) coated with Eudragit®S100 (ED) were prepared by a desolvation technique. Sodium sulfate was used as a desolvating agent and the drying process was freeze-drying. Factors affecting morphology, particle size and zeta potential of microcapsules were evaluated, i.e. weight ratio of DS:CS:ED, surfactant (polysorbate 80), anti-adherent (silicon dioxide), and the use of sonication or homogenization in preparation processes. The weight ratio of DS:CS:ED at 1:2:6 provided the smallest microcapsules of about 82.37±1.61 micrometer in …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Porous bio glass-ceramics were prepared via natural fibres burning-out process. Glass-ceramics were fabricated by controlled crystallization of suitable glass compositions to give required crystalline phase/s. Porous structure was formed alongside during burning-out of natural fibres. Three glass batches were prepared in the SiO2-CaO-P2O5-K2O-Na2O-CaF2 glass system, then melted, quenched and milled to give fine glass powders. DTA thermograms for the three glass compositions showed crystallization temperatures between 720 and 760°C and Tg ranging between 508 and 645°C. Porous glass-ceramics were characterized for bulk density, phase evolution and microstructures. Different compositions resulted in different bulk densities and phases that crystallized out. Fluorapatite …

Water Soluble Chitosan As An Environment-Friendly Coagulant In Removal Of Rubber Particles From Skim Rubber Latex, R Werathirachot, P Danwanichakul, C Kongkaew, S Loykulnant

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Water soluble chitosan, dissolved in hot deionized water to obtain 0.8% solution, was used for the coagulation-flocculation of skim natural rubber latex. The efficiency of coagulation-flocculation of skim rubber latex without pH adjustment was much poorer than that of neutral skim rubber latex. When adding chitosan solution to the neutral skim rubber latex with a rubber content of 5.300 %wt/vol until the concentration of chitosan in the dispersion was 0.107%, the phase separation between rubber particles and yellow serum was clearly observed. At this condition, the removal efficiency of skim rubber particles was found to be the best among all …

General Validity Of Reciprocity In Quantum Mechanics, P.T. Leung, H. Y. Xie, D. P. Tsai Dec 2008

General Validity Of Reciprocity In Quantum Mechanics, P.T. Leung, H. Y. Xie, D. P. Tsai

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The concept of reciprocity symmetry for matter-wave propagation is established for nonrelativistic quantum mechanics with previous results in the literature extended to include nonlocal interactions. Examples are given for cases with both local and nonlocal potentials, where we show in particular that reciprocity can be violated for the motion of a charged particle in an external electromagnetic field. In addition, this symmetry is applied to interpret a recent analysis [Phys. Rev. A 64, 042716 (2001)] on the symmetry of transmission through one-dimensional complex potentials, with the emphasis that the validity of reciprocity can go beyond that of time-reversal symmetry, such …

Silencing Of Mbd1 And Mecp2 In Prostate-Cancer-Derived Pc3 Cells Produces Differential Gene Expression Profiles And Cellular Phenotypes, Yaqinuddin Ahmed, Farhat Abbas, Syed S. Naqvi, Mohammad U. Bashir, Romena Qazi, Sohail A. Qureshi Dec 2008

Silencing Of Mbd1 And Mecp2 In Prostate-Cancer-Derived Pc3 Cells Produces Differential Gene Expression Profiles And Cellular Phenotypes, Yaqinuddin Ahmed, Farhat Abbas, Syed S. Naqvi, Mohammad U. Bashir, Romena Qazi, Sohail A. Qureshi

Section of Urology

Alterations in genomic CpG methylation patterns have been found to be associated with cell transformation and neoplasia. Although it is recognized that methylation of CpG residues negatively regulates gene expression, how the various MBPs (methyl-binding proteins) contribute to this process remains elusive. To determine whether the two well characterized proteins MeCP2 (methyl-CpG-binding protein 2) and MBD1 (methyl-CpG-binding domain 1) have distinct or redundant functions, we employed RNAi (RNA interference) to silence their expression in the prostate cancer-derived PC3cell line, and subsequently compared cell growth, invasion and migration properties of these cell lines in addition to their respective mRNA-expressionprofiles. Cells devoid …

Risk Exposure And Management In Cross-Border Banking., Sheriffdeen A. Tella Dec 2008

Risk Exposure And Management In Cross-Border Banking., Sheriffdeen A. Tella

Economic and Financial Review

The title of this paper connotes the fact that risk-based supervision and inflation targeting are mutually inclusive policies that have to be carried out simultaneously. This is not true. The two frameworks can be adopted at the same time but they do not need to go pari passu. To that extent the paper can be regarded as two-in-one. In this connection, the two frameworks are treated separately but within the context of a single paper. We looked at their challenges and prospects in monetary policy formulation and implementation in the Nigerian economy. The rest of this paper is divided into …

Asset Price Movement And Derivatives: Implications For Risk-Based Supervision And Effective Monetary Policy., Biodun Adedipe

Economic and Financial Review

The consideration of asset price movements and monetary policy has attracted a lot of attention in the last few decades, as asset prices moved upwards significantly and there arose the general perception that there are bubbles in those prices. The argument revolves around the role that monetary policy can play in this whether it can be used to prick the bubble before it is due for natural burst, or it can be designed and implemented in such manner as to prevent bubbles to grow in the first place.

What Impact Does Sustainable Certification Have? A Comparison Of Aquatic Nitrate And Phosphate Levels Between Two Golf Courses In The Bloomington-Normal Community, Jason Koval, '09

Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers

Two golf courses in the Bloomington-Normal community in central Illinois were tested for nitrate and phosphate concentrations in their ponds. One golf course (The Den) is Audubon International certified while the other golf course (Ironwood) is not. This study tries to establish if differing environmental management practices can contribute to significantly different concentrations of nutrients. It was determined that the nitrate concentration was higher at the non-certified golf course, while the phosphate concentrations at both courses were essentially negligible. The implications of these findings are discussed and were presented to both golf courses. It is the hope of this paper …

Environmental Evaluation Of A Quaternary Wastewater Treatment Wetland, Olivia Demeo, '09 Dec 2008

Environmental Evaluation Of A Quaternary Wastewater Treatment Wetland, Olivia Demeo, '09

Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers

Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment have become a sustainable alternative to environmentally harmful traditional wastewater treatment methods. This case study evaluated the Schroeder Wildlife Sanctuary, a wetland area constructed for removal of nutrients from wastewater. An environmental evaluation of the wetland was completed that addressed three parameters: the water quality of wetland effluent, the avian biodiversity within the sanctuary, and an assessment of community outreach and education initiatives. Water quality testing was conducted using rudimentary LaMotte and Hach testing kits. The data was contrary to the literature and showed no nutrient removal occurring. However, the results were inconclusive because the …

Growing Food Justice In West Bloomington, Illinois, Daniel Burke, '09 Dec 2008

Growing Food Justice In West Bloomington, Illinois, Daniel Burke, '09

Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers

In some places in the United States, guns are more accessible than tomatoes. In a nation where food is in relative abundance, how can this be? Food security is the ready availability of nutritious and safe food and the assured ability to obtain it through normal sources (Morris et al 1992). Food justice asserts that no one should live without enough food because of economic constraints or social inequities. In this way, food justice frames the lack of healthy food sources in poor communities as a human rights issue (People's Grocery 2008). However, in some communities, access to fresh, healthy …

A Circuit Model For Esd Performance Analysis Of Printed Circuit Boards, Byong-Su Seol, Jong-Sung Lee, Jae-Deok Lim, Hyungseok Lee, Harkbyeong Park, Argha Nandy, David Pommerenke

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper provides a SPICE-compatible circuit model for characterizing electrostatic discharge (ESD) clamping performance of protection devices mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs). An equivalent circuit model for a commercial ESD generator is introduced and a simulation methodology of an ESD protection device with non-linear resistance characteristic using voltage controlled current source is described. These models combined to create a full circuit model with a PCB model in a SPICE-like circuit simulator. Comparison results between the simulated and measured are presented to verify the accuracy of the proposed circuit model. A trade-off analysis between the ESD clamping performance and signal …

Promoting Hope: Suggestions For School Counselors, Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti, Lisa M. Edwards, Shane J. Lopez

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

School counselors need multiple resources to assist today's students in developing to their fullest potential. This development might often be measured outwardly by academic success; however, psychological and emotional well-being of students is a large part of this success. The construct of hope is defined as a bidimensional characteristic consisting of an agency component (willpower to move toward one's goals) and a pathways component (ability to develop multiple routes to one's goals) and has been linked to academic success, athletic performance, psychological adjustment, and physical health in students (Snyder et al., 1991). Helping school counselors to enhance individual strengths through …

Cinematherapy As A Clinical Intervention: Theoretical Rationale And Empirical Credibility, Michael Powell Dec 2008

Cinematherapy As A Clinical Intervention: Theoretical Rationale And Empirical Credibility, Michael Powell

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Two problems must be addressed before cinematherapy can advance as a credible therapeutic intervention: (a) a solid theoretical rationale must exist supporting its use in mental health counseling, and (b) quantifiable data must exist promoting its treatment efficacy, and these data need to extend to various clinical populations representing a range of mental health conditions. This study intends to address both problems by critiquing the theoretical and experimental literature on cinematherapy and measuring the relative effectiveness of a structured, nondirective cinematherapy intervention at improving the hope and optimism of an adult diagnosed with Major Depression. One person (JV= 1) was …

Emotional, Cognitive, And Family Systems Mediators Of Children's Adjustment To Interparental Conflict, Gregory M. Fosco, John H. Grych

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Emotional, cognitive, and family systems processes have been identified as mediators of the association between interparental conflict and children's adjustment. However, little is known about how they function in relation to one another because they have not all been assessed in the same study. This investigation examined the relations among children's exposure to parental conflict, their appraisals of threat and blame, their emotional reaction, and triangulation into parental disagreements. One hundred fifty ethnically diverse 8- to 12-year-old children and both of their parents participated in the study. Comparisons of 3 models proposing different relations among these processes indicated that they …
