Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

It is estimated that every 72 seconds, someone in America develops Alzheimer's disease. With this trend and if no cure find, experts predict by mid-century every 33 second, one American will develops Alzheimer's disease. One of the specific features of Alzheimer's disease is the accumulation of Beta-Amyloid in the brain. Early detection of the Amyloid may prevent or progress of the Alzheimer's disease. In this report, we try to use region growing method to detect the Amyloid in the mice brain MRI. Copyright © 2008 by the International Institute of Informatics and Systemics.

Will There Ever Be Consensus On Cs1?, Robert M. Siegfried, David Chays, Katherine G. Herbert Dec 2008

Will There Ever Be Consensus On Cs1?, Robert M. Siegfried, David Chays, Katherine G. Herbert

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The choice of programming language, the approach by which students are taught and the software tools made available to students have been controversial issues in many ways. While there once was a consensus of some sort within the computer science education community, it is much more difficult to find common ground among those of us who teach introductory programming courses. The literature is explored and answers sought to the question of which language is optimum in teaching novice programmers, as well as the approach that ought to be used. Finally, the question of whether a consensus can be reached is …

On Static And Dynamic Partitioning Behavior Of Large-Scale Networks, Zhongmei Yao, Derek Leonard, Xiaoming Wang, Dmitri Loguinov Dec 2008

On Static And Dynamic Partitioning Behavior Of Large-Scale Networks, Zhongmei Yao, Derek Leonard, Xiaoming Wang, Dmitri Loguinov

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this paper, we analyze the problem of network disconnection in the context of large-scale P2P networks and understand how both static and dynamic patterns of node failure affect the resilience of such graphs. We start by applying classical results from random graph theory to show that a large variety of deterministic and random P2P graphs almost surely (i.e., with probability 1 − o(1)) remain connected under random failure if and only if they have no isolated nodes. This simple, yet powerful, result subsequently allows us to derive in closed-form the probability that a P2P network develops isolated nodes, and …

Development Of Tracking Systems For Reworked Products, Vaddadi Sri Brahmeshwar Abhishek

Theses and Dissertations

This independent study was carried out at a popular food production company. French fries are one of the most popularly consumed fast food in the entire world. Business empires have been built from the profits. Quality standards in a food production company specific to frozen foods are very high. These standards ensure that the food would be edible until the date promised, if stored under desirable conditions. In addition, companies face a tough task of adhering to the standards set by the customers, who desire a certain cut, and characteristics from their product. As a result companies that supply products …

The Community Ecology Of A Riverine Turtle Assemblage In The Tennessee River Gorge, Christopher Bob Manis Dec 2008

The Community Ecology Of A Riverine Turtle Assemblage In The Tennessee River Gorge, Christopher Bob Manis

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In attempting to characterize a community, it is necessary to measure ecological attributes to quantitatively describe the unique aspects of that community and to make comparisons. This thesis reports on a long-term investigation of the community ecology of a turtle assemblage in the Tennessee River Gorge relative to the following hypotheses: 1) ecologically generalized species will be the most numerically abundant forms present in the TRG, 2) adult sex ratios of turtle populations in the TRG will be biased in favor of males, and 3) mean adult body size measurements and size dimorphism index (SDI) values of turtle populations in …

Assessment Of Exposure And Effects Associated With Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Contamination In South Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jessica K. Leet

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The southern part of Chattanooga, TN has been subject to dumping of industrial waste for over 100 years. Chattanooga Creek flows north through this area to the Tennessee River. The dumping of coal tar and other industrial waste in this area h as lead to the contamination of Chattanooga Creek and soil of the surrounding floodplains. Many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are found in these areas, specifically the 16 PAHs the EPA and ATSDR consider to be priority pollutants. The close proximity of residents to contaminated sites in southern Chattanooga initiated an assessment of the potential human health risks. The …

Cognition, Commitment Language, And Behavioral Change Among Cocaine-Dependent Patients, Efrat Aharonovich, Paul Amrhein, Adam Bisaga, Edward V. Nunes, Deborah S. Hasin

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Patients' cognitive abilities and verbal expressions of commitment to behavioral change predict different aspects of substance abuse treatment outcome, but these 2 traits have never been examined conjointly. The authors therefore investigated patients' cognitive abilities and verbal expressions of commitment to behavioral change as predictors of retention and drug use outcomes in an outpatient cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) of adult cocaine-dependent patients. A neuropsychological battery was administered at baseline. Two independent raters used recordings of CBT sessions to code commitment language strength across the temporal segments (e.g., beginning, middle, and end) of 1 session per patient. Better cognitive abilities predicted …

Generation And Analysis Of Fcg Data Using A Single Specimen And Kmax - ∆K Testing Matrix, Sree Phani Chandar Reddy Dec 2008

Generation And Analysis Of Fcg Data Using A Single Specimen And Kmax - ∆K Testing Matrix, Sree Phani Chandar Reddy

Masters Theses

A custom method to generate fatigue crack growth (FCG) data requires testing of multiple specimens at different load ratios. In addition, it includes the application of a load shedding procedure from pre-cracking level to threshold.

In this thesis, a novel method of testing has been investigated that utilizes a single specimen and a testing matrix in terms of Kmaxand ∆K values corresponding to predetermined R-ratios for which FCG data, da/dN, are recorded. Automatic K-controlled tests on 2324-T39 Al alloy were conducted using the ∆K increasing and ∆K decreasing procedures while Kmaxwas kept constant. Results show that …

Global Skin Friction Diagnostics In Complex Separated Flows, Sudesh A. Woodiga Dec 2008

Global Skin Friction Diagnostics In Complex Separated Flows, Sudesh A. Woodiga

Masters Theses

This work describes the application of a global luminescent oil film skin friction meter to quantitative global skin friction diagnostics in complex separated flows. The development of this technique is based on the relationship between the oil film thickness and luminescent intensity of an oil film mixed with a luminescent dye. The projected thin oil film equation is given to relate the normalized luminescent intensity with skin friction. The basis for this technique is the variational solution for the thin oil film equation on the image plane. The variational formulation with a smoothness constraint on skin friction is proposed to …

Threat-Balancing In Vendor Transition, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Wee-Kiat Lim, Siew Kien Sia, Christina Soh Dec 2008

Threat-Balancing In Vendor Transition, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Wee-Kiat Lim, Siew Kien Sia, Christina Soh

CCX Research

While many outsourcing contracts are expiring, and vendor transition is becoming an increasing concern, little research helps organizations manage vendor transition. This paper explores vendor transition across two case sites. In one case, the outgoing vendor cooperated with the client which resulted in the client distancing itself from interactions between vendors. In the second case, the outgoing vendor was openly hostile, with the result that the client allied with the incoming vendor to manage vendor transition. These findings mirror expectations from balance of threat theory, a political science theory about interactions between nations. Balance of threat theory predicts that outgoing …

Boys, Masculinities And Juvenile Justice, Nancy E. Dowd Dec 2008

Boys, Masculinities And Juvenile Justice, Nancy E. Dowd

UF Law Faculty Publications

Culture and tradition are part of the macrosystem of ideas and beliefs that have a dramatic effect on children and families. One aspect of culture is gender beliefs, values and roles. Feminist analysis has explored the incorporation of gender in a wide range of structures, challenging gender bias and advocating reform of a range of laws, structural systems, and social practices. Masculinities analysis, an outgrowth of feminist analysis that focuses on men as gendered subjects, provides a perspective to consider those areas in which men are disproportionately present either in positions of power and privilege, or in positions of disadvantage. …

The Pluralistic Universe Of Law Towards A Neo-Classical Legal Pragmatism, Susan Haack Dec 2008

The Pluralistic Universe Of Law Towards A Neo-Classical Legal Pragmatism, Susan Haack

Articles

After a brief sketch of the history of philosophical pragmatism generally, and of legal pragmatism specifically (section 1), this paper develops a new, neo-classical legal pragmatism: a theory of law drawing in part on Holmes, but also on ideas from the classical pragmatist tradition in philosophy. Main themes are the "pluralistic universe" of law (section 2); the evolution of legal systems (section 3); the place of logic in the law (section 4); and the relation of law and morality (section 5).

Predicting Young’S Modulus Of Nanowires From First-Principles Calculations On Their Surface And Bulk Materials, Guofeng Wang, Xiaodong Li Dec 2008

Predicting Young’S Modulus Of Nanowires From First-Principles Calculations On Their Surface And Bulk Materials, Guofeng Wang, Xiaodong Li

Faculty Publications

Using the concept of surface stress, we developed a model that is able to predict Young’s modulus of nanowires as a function of nanowire diameters from the calculated properties of their surface and bulk materials. We took both equilibrium strain effect and surface stress effect into consideration to account for the geometric size influence on the elastic properties of nanowires. In this work, we combined first-principles density functional theory calculations of material properties with linear elasticity theory of clamped-end three-point bending. Furthermore, we applied this computational approach to Ag, Au, and ZnOnanowires. For both Ag and Aunanowires, our theoretical predictions …
