Metode Analisis Akar Masalah Dan Solusi, Ari Harsono P.

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Most of discourses in meetings, discussions, conferences and talk shows are not equipped with a method which analyzes the root cause and its fundamental solution, and even without the need of analyzing it. As the result,. the discourses almost never find the root cause, and so automatically there are be no fundamental solution. The Method of Root Cause Analysis and Solutions (MRCAS) gives a mode of thought figured by a flow chart and some examples. Application of MRCAS helps its users simultanously thinking inductively and deductively, qualitatively and quantitatively, more deeply and holistically, and also facilitate them in inter or …

Implication Of The White Group In Perspective Of The Democracy Development In Indonesia, H. Soebagio Dec 2008

Implication Of The White Group In Perspective Of The Democracy Development In Indonesia, H. Soebagio

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Politic participation in democratic State is an indicator of valid implementation of highest State power exercise by people (people sovereignty), that is imbodied by their involvement in democracy event (general elections). The increasingly higher level of political participation indicates that people follow, understand, and engange in national activities. Reversely, a low level of political participation generally indicates that people place less appreciation or interest in national affairs or activities. The low level of peoples’s political participation is reflected in golput (golongan putih-white group or non-voting) attitude. In democratic perspective, golput attitude will of course has implication on development of democracy …

Virus-Like Particles And Cellular Changes In Plants Infected With Sweetpotato Viruses, Jeonggu Sim, Rodrigo Valverde, Christopher Clark, Se Chul Chun

Faculty Publications

Studies with the transmission electron microscope were used to detect and attempt to identify viruses infecting sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) and other Ipomoea species. Flexuous-rods, short curved-rods, and spherical viruslike particles were observed in cells of symptomatic plants. Also, various cytopathic changes such as crystals, vesicles, fibril structures, and cylindrical inclusions were observed. The present study showed that some of these cytopathic changes were associated with some viral groups, which might be helpful in diagnosis. © The Korean Society of Plant Pathology.

Latent Common Genetic Components Of Obesity Traits, B. O. Tayo, R. Harders, A. Luke, X. Zhu, R. S. Cooper

Faculty Publications

Background: Obesity is rapidly becoming a global epidemic. Unlike many complex human diseases, obesity is defined not just by a single trait or phenotype, but jointly by measures of anthropometry and metabolic status. Methods: We applied maximum likelihood factor analysis to identify common latent factors underlying observed covariance in multiple obesity-related measures. Both the genetic components and the mode of inheritance of the common factors were evaluated. A total of 1775 participants from 590 families for whom measures on obesity-related traits were available were included in this study. Results: The average age of participants was 37 years, 39% of the …

Faculty Publications

Varying susceptibility to tebufenozide was recorded in the sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), collected from Louisiana sugarcane locations with different selection pressures. Results from diet incorporation bioassays with tebufenozide indicated significant increases in LC50 (3.78-fold) and LC90 (7-fold) values for a colony from Duson (DU), an area with higher selection pressure, compared with a colony from Alexandria (ALFX), an area with no selection pressure. Differences were not detected in LC50 values among colonies from areas where use of tebufenozide was discontinued or rotated with other chemistries. Selections with tebufenozide of DU larvae over 12 generations resulted in a …

Faculty Publications

Chromosomal sites of RNA polymerase III (Pol III) transcription have been demonstrated to have "extratranscriptional" functions, as the assembled Pol III complex can act as chromatin boundaries or pause sites for replication forks, can alter nucleosome positioning or affect transcription of neighboring genes, and can play a role in sister chromatid cohesion. Several studies have demonstrated that assembled Pol III complexes block the propagation of heterochromatin-mediated gene repression. Here we show that in Saccharomyces cerevisiae tRNA genes (tDNAs) and even partially assembled Pol III complexes containing only the transcription factor TFIIIC can exhibit chromatin boundary functions both as heterochromatin barriers …

Host-Pathogen Interactions, Insect Outbreaks, And Natural Selection For Disease Resistance, Bret D. Elderd, Jonathan Dushoff, Greg Dwyer

Faculty Publications

The theory of insect population dynamics has shown that heterogeneity in natural-enemy attack rates is strongly stabilizing. We tested the usefulness of this theory for outbreaking insects, many of which are attacked by infectious pathogens. We measured heterogeneity among gypsy moth larvae in their risk of infection with a nucleopolyhedrovirus, which is effectively heterogeneity in the pathogen's attack rate. Our data show that heterogeneity in infection risk in this insect is so high that it leads to a stable equilibrium in the models, which is inconsistent with the outbreaks seen in North American gypsy moth populations. Our data further suggest …

Surgery Description Of Colored Knots, Richard A. Litherland, Steven D. Wallace

Faculty Publications

The pair (K,ρ) consisting of a knot K S3 and a surjective map ρ from the knot group onto a dihedral group of order 2p for p an odd integer is said to be a p-colored knot. In [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 6(2006) 673-697] D Moskovich conjectures that there are exactly p equivalence classes of p-colored knots up to surgery along unknots in the kernel of the coloring. He shows that for p = 3 and 5 the conjecture holds and that for any odd p there are at least p distinct classes, but gives no general upper bound. We show …

Theoretical And Numerical Study Of Mlem And Osem Reconstruction Algorithms For Motion Correction In Emission Tomography, Joyoni Dey, Michael A. King

Faculty Publications

Abstract- Patient body-motion and respiratory-motion impacts the image quality of cardiac PET or SPECT perfusion images. Several algorithms exist in the literature to correct for motion within the iterative maximum-likelihood reconstructionframework. In this work, three algorithms are derived using Poisson statistics to correct for patient motion. The first one is a motion compensated MLEM algorithm (MC-MLEM). The next two algorithms called MGEM-1 and MGEM-2 (short for Motion Gated EM, 1 and 2) use the motion states as subsets, in two different ways. Experiments were performed with NCAT phantoms with exactly known motion as the source and attenuation distributions. The SIMIND …

Impossibility Of Extending Pólya's Theorem To "Forms" With Arbitrary Real Exponents, Charles N. Delzell

Faculty Publications

Pólya proved that if a form (homogeneous polynomial) with real coefficients is positive on the nonnegative orthant (except at the origin), then it is the quotient of two real forms with no negative coefficients. While Pólya's theorem extends, easily, from ordinary real forms to "generalized" real forms with arbitrary rational exponents, we show that it does not extend to generalized real forms with arbitrary real (possibly irrational) exponents. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. We report on the results of rapid responses to GRB 080330 and GRB 080413A by the ROTSE-IIIb and ROTSE-IIIc telecopes. In both cases, optical follow-up started during the prompt emission phase and recorded optical flares peaking at similar times as the last hard X-ray pulses detected by the Swift BAT. For both events, the XRT observations started at the end of the prompt BAT detection and displayed an evolution in time opposite to the optical lightcurve. These very early observations provide us an opportunity to probe the onset of afterglow for these two events. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.
