The Catholic School According To The Code Of Canon Law, Zenon Grocholewski

Journal of Catholic Education

For close to three decades, his Eminence Zenon Cardinal Grocholeski, worked at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura as notary, chancellor, secretary and prefect. A professor, scholar, and canonist of exceptional ability, he is considered one of the world’s most prominent experts on the Code of Canon Law. In light of his competence and experience, The Servant of God Pope John Paul II, appointed his Eminence as Prefect of the Dicastery for Catholic Education in 1999. This rare combination and manifestation of intellect, expertise, and dedication is witnessed in the oration presented for publication, The Catholic School According to …

An Assessment Of The Institutional Vision Of Catholic Colleges And Universities, Robert Abelman, Amy Dalessandro Dec 2008

An Assessment Of The Institutional Vision Of Catholic Colleges And Universities, Robert Abelman, Amy Dalessandro

Journal of Catholic Education

Institutional vision is a philosophical template”a concept of what, at its best, a college or university is like and the kinds of human beings that institution is attempting to cultivate. A content analysis of the institutional vision of a nation-wide sample of Catholic schools was performed and key linguistic components found to constitute a well conceived, viable, and easily diffused mission and vision were isolated. The prevalence of these components in comparison to other types of religious schools and secular four-year institutions is discussed. Findings suggest that Catholic schools are vision-driven institutions that communicate their priorities and defining characteristics by …

Upstream Without A Paddle: Gene Patenting And The Protection Of The "Infostructure", Seth Shulman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The U.S. patent system, designed to protect rights to specific, marketable gadgets, has increasingly over the past few decades granted patents on comparatively abstract and amorphous ideas that stretch the system beyond recognition. Overly broad patents, and patents too far "upstream" from the marketplace, I argue, undermine the patent regime, hamper innovation, and prove exceedingly difficult to adjudicate. Using a series of conceptual and historical analogies, I attempt to assess the patenting of genes and other broad, "upstream" patents from a public policy context, emphasizing, as many are coming to realize, that things work best in the knowledge-based economy when …

Indigenous Peoples And Gene Disputes, Debra Harry Dec 2008

Indigenous Peoples And Gene Disputes, Debra Harry

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Wary from decades exploitation in the name of science, Indigenous peoples typically approach externally-generated research with caution, and for good reason. Indigenous peoples have been on the receiving end of research carried out in insensitive, and sometimes, harmful ways. Research has historically been a top-down, outside-in process, with Indigenous peoples serving merely as research subjects, with little opportunity for meaningful participation or benefit from the outcomes of the research. Over the past two decades, with the advent of the Human Genome Project and other genetic research projects, there has been a corresponding increase in genetic research projects that put Indigenous …

You Don't Own Me: Recommendations To Protect Human Contributors Of Biological Material After Washington University V. Catalona, Laura B. Rowe Dec 2008

You Don't Own Me: Recommendations To Protect Human Contributors Of Biological Material After Washington University V. Catalona, Laura B. Rowe

Chicago-Kent Law Review

As research using human biological materials has rapidly developed, so too has the debate over the ownership of these highly valuable materials. Most recently, the Eighth Circuit in Washington University v. Catalona held that research participants do not retain any ownership interest in the biological materials they contribute to research. This note argues that the misguided Catalona decision, in combination with unclear, outdated, and inadequate federal research regulations, has left human contributors of biological material largely unprotected and vulnerable to the goals of researchers, institutions, and biotechnology firms. Accordingly, this note proposes critical amendments to the federal research regulations that …

Comparative Analysis Of Forecasting Techniques With Intermittent Demand, John Deforest Dec 2008

Comparative Analysis Of Forecasting Techniques With Intermittent Demand, John Deforest

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The world and life are filled with uncertainty. Statistics, and more specifically, forecasting techniques allow us to quantify uncertainty and make decisions based on that information. Many find forecasting advantageous in areas such as predicting consumer demand, stock prices, terrorist attacks, epidemiology, etc. This thesis will focus on forecasting intermittent demand, which is the study of analyzing sporadic demand. One application includes an airplane manufacturer’s sporadic or intermittent demand for spare parts in their distribution center. Since spare parts are not needed on any regular schedule, it is thought of as intermittent. Knowing the projected quantity for a given time …

Modeling, Analysis And Control Of Flexible Solid-State Hysteretic Actuators, Kushan Vora Dec 2008

Modeling, Analysis And Control Of Flexible Solid-State Hysteretic Actuators, Kushan Vora

All Theses

A distributed parameters modeling and control framework for flexible solid-state hysteretic actuator is presented in this work. For the simplicity of analysis, the actuator dynamic behavior is decoupled and treated separately from the hysteresis nonlinearity. To include the effects of widely-used flexural mechanisms, a mass-spring-damper boundary condition is considered for system. Moreover, the effect of electromechanical actuation is included as a concentrate force at the boundary. The problem is then divided into two parts: first part deals with free motion analysis of system in order to obtain eigenvalues and eigenfunctions using the expansion theorem and a standard eigenvalue problem procedure. …

Laboratory Studies Of Responses Of Anuran Amphibians To Roundup Exposures: Reference Toxicant And Components, Lindsay Moore Dec 2008

Laboratory Studies Of Responses Of Anuran Amphibians To Roundup Exposures: Reference Toxicant And Components, Lindsay Moore

All Theses

Roundup¨ has been implicated as a possible cause for the declining amphibian populations in North America. Carefully designed laboratory toxicity tests are crucial for accurate risk assessment of the responses of anuran populations to incidental exposures of Roundup¨ herbicides. The overall objective of these studies was to determine the response of North American anuran species to exposures of Roundup¨ formulations and components to support or refute the claim that Roundup¨ is a factor in amphibian decline in North America. Aqueous 96 hour static non-renewal laboratory tests were utilized to (1) evaluate the effectiveness of copper sulfate as a reference toxicant …

Investigation Of The Merging Of Two Axisymmetric Turbulent Jets, Jeffrey Smith Dec 2008

Investigation Of The Merging Of Two Axisymmetric Turbulent Jets, Jeffrey Smith

All Theses

A study was done to determine the converging distance of two axisymmetric turbulent jets and to compare the experimental results with the Reichardt hypothesis. This experiment consisted of measuring the velocity profiles of the two jets and manipulating the momentum ratio between the jets. Through testing, it was determined that the Reichardt hypothesis while efficient, over predicts the converging distance of the jets by up to 25% in some cases.
An Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) was used to take measurements across the path of the jets and monitored the velocity and the turbulent kinetic energy. After observing the velocity profiles, …

An Investigation On Spot-Weld Modeling Complexity For Crash Simulation, Srinivasan Vimalanathan Dec 2008

An Investigation On Spot-Weld Modeling Complexity For Crash Simulation, Srinivasan Vimalanathan

All Theses

In order to design car body structures which are safe during crash, modern automotive manufacturers perform both full-scale experimental crash tests and computer simulation of vehicle crash events using commercially available Finite Element Analysis (FEA) packages such as ABAQUS or LS-DYNA. Use of crash simulations significantly reduces the number of real time crash experiments needed and reduces the time required for design changes. However, in order to capture accurately crash behavior during high-speed impact, a large amount of detailed FEA modeling features such as number and types of elements, mesh element size, number of components, different types of connectors, material …

A Microbiological Survey And Characterization, Andrew Daane Dec 2008

A Microbiological Survey And Characterization, Andrew Daane

All Theses

In our study, two dairy compost heaps and one vegetable scrap compost heap were constructed on two research farms in Clemson, SC. Samples were taken from each heap from different locations at 8 elected intervals and analyzed for enterococci and VRE counts by spread plating on Bile Esculin agar (BEA) and BEA containing 6 g/ml of vancomycin, respectively. The initial populations of enterococci and VRE in compost were in the range of 6.46-7.43 and 5.36-6.70 log CFU/g, respectively. After 30 days of active composting the average VRE populations declined ca. 4.6, 4.07, 3.97 and 1.6 logs at the top, center, …
