The June 2008 Flare Of Markarian 421 From Optical To Tev Energies, P. T. Reynolds, Et Al

We present optical, X-ray, high-energy (30 GeV) and very high energy (100 GeV; VHE) observations of the high-frequency peaked blazar Mrk 421 taken between 2008 May 24 and June 23. A high-energy γ-ray signal was detected by AGILE with between June 9 and 15, with F(E>100 MeV) = 42+14 –12 × 10–8 photons cm–2 s–1. This flaring state is brighter than the average flux observed by EGRET by a factor of ~3, but still consistent with the highest EGRET flux. In hard X-rays (20-60 keV) SuperAGILE resolved a five-day flare (June 9-15) peaking at ~55 mCrab. SuperAGILE, …

A number of research challenges in the area of program comprehension are presented. the expressiveness and effectiveness of program comprehension are discussed, and research directions are organized along these two axes. Both fundament research issues are raised along with new applications for program comprehension methods. the work advocates the investigation of better measures, further empirical studies, and controlled experiments to assess the effectiveness of program comprehension techniques © 2008 IEEE.

Chromosomal Inversions Between Human And Chimpanzee Lineages Caused By Retrotransposons, Jungnam Lee, Kyudong Han, Thomas J. Meyer, Heui Soo Kim, Mark A. Batzer

The long interspersed element-1 (LINE-1 or L1) and Alu elements are the most abundant mobile elements comprising 21% and 11% of the human genome, respectively. Since the divergence of human and chimpanzee lineages, these elements have vigorously created chromosomal rearrangements causing genomic difference between humans and chimpanzees by either increasing or decreasing the size of genome. Here, we report an exotic mechanism, retrotransposon recombination-mediated inversion (RRMI), that usually does not alter the amount of genomic material present. Through the comparison of the human and chimpanzee draft genome sequences, we identified 252 inversions whose respective inversion junctions can clearly be characterized. …

We explore problems related to computing graph distances in the data-stream model. The goal is to design algorithms that can process the edges of a graph in an arbitrary order given only a limited amount of working memory. We are motivated by both the practical challenge of processing massive graphs such as the web graph and the desire for a better theoretical understanding of the data-stream model. In particular, we are interested in the trade-offs between model parameters such as per-data-item processing time, total space, and the number of passes that may be taken over the stream. A switched DC voltage three level NPC is proposed in this paper to eliminate capacitor balancing problems in conventional three-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) inverter. the proposed configuration requires only one DC link with a voltage Vdc/2, where Vdc is the DC link voltage in a conventional NPC inverter. to get rated DC link voltage (Vdc), the voltage source is alternately connected in parallel to one of the two series capacitors using two switches and two diodes with device voltage rating of Vdc/2. the frequency at which the voltage source is switched is independent and will not affect the operation …
