PolC is the polymerase responsible for genome duplication in many Gram-positive bacteria and represents an attractive target for antibacterial development. We have determined the 2.4-Å resolution crystal structure of Geobacillus kaustophilus PolC in a ternary complex with DNA and dGTP. The structure reveals nascent base pair interactions that lead to highly accurate nucleotide incorporation. A unique β-strand motif in the PolC thumb domain contacts the minor groove, allowing replication errors to be sensed up to 8 nt upstream of the active site. PolC exhibits the potential for large-scale conformational flexibility, which could encompass the catalytic residues. The structure suggests a …

Safety assessment in drug development involves numerous statistical challenges, and yet statistical methodologies and their applications to safety data have not been fully developed, despite a recent increase of interest in this area. In practice, a conventional univariate approach for analysis of safety data involves application of the Fisher's exact test to compare the proportion of subjects who experience adverse events (AEs) between treatment groups; This approach ignores several common features of safety data, including the presence of multiple endpoints, longitudinal follow-up, and a possible relationship between the AEs within body systems. ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus ultrasound has been found useful in diagnosis of maxillary sinus diseases. OBJECTIVE: Is to compare the usefulness of diagnostic ultrasound, radiography of the maxillary sinuses with the results of he diagnostic wash out in detection of the maxillary sinus diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-five patients (109 maxillary sinuses) with suspected sinus diseases on clinical evaluation examined by ultrasonography, plain radiography and followed by diagnostic antral washout. RESULTS: The positive returns were 48.6% (53/109). The sensitivity of the ultrasonography and plain radiography were (92.5%), (90.5%) respectively. ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Cardiac surgery can either induce acute renal failure or improve GFR by improving the cardiac performance. Acute renal shutdown (urine output 2.5 mg/dl) and 16 (18.6%) patients developed acute renal dysfunction (serum creatinine 1.6-2.4 mg/dl). The risk factors that were noted in the development of ARF were age, raised preoperative blood urea and creatinine, low cardiac output state, diabetes mellitus, oligurea, total cross clamp time total CPB time, and significant hypotension during the procedure or during intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Mortality rate for established ARF was extremely poor (50 %). CONCLUSION: Avoidance of this dangerous outcome looks …

Photopolymerization-Induced Crystallization And Phase Separation In Poly(Ethylene Oxide)/Triacrylate Blends, Soo Jeoung Park, Thein Kyu

The present article describes experimental and theoretical investigations of miscibility and crystallization behavior of blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and triacrylate monomer (TA) using differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. The PEO/TA blends manifested a single T(g) varying systematically with composition suggestive of a miscible character in their amorphous states. Moreover, there occurs melting point depression of PEO crystals with increasing TA. A phase diagram was subsequently established that exhibited a solid+liquid coexistence region bound by the liquidus and solidus lines, followed by an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) at a lower temperature. ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Rotavirus is the main cause of diarrhea in 6-12) months which was (31.4%). CONCLUSION: Rotavirus cause 47.4% of acute gastroenteritis cases of the studied sample with no significant statistical difference between rotavirus and other causes of gastroenteritis regarding demographic features (except for gender, more in males), clinical features, and type of treatment and course of disease (except time of onset).Concordance rate between ELISA and Latex was found to be high confirming their validity.

Africa is thought to be a large source of interannual variability in the global carbon cycle, only vaguely attributed to climate fluctuations. This study uses a biophysical model, Simple Biosphere, to examine in detail what specific factors, physiological (acute stress from low soil water, temperature, or low humidity) and biophysical (low vegetation radiation use), are responsible for spatiotemporal patterns of photosynthesis across the African continent during the period 1982-2003. Acute soil water stress emerges as the primary factor driving interannual variability of photosynthesis for most of Africa.
