Reclaiming Old Shanghai? Dec 2008

Reclaiming Old Shanghai?

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

A few weeks ago, it was reported that horseracing had returned to China for the first time since 1949. Though this time, the horses are running in Wuhan, horseracing in China was for a long time almost synonymous with Shanghai. In case that history is new to you, here are a few places to go for more on Shanghai’s racing history:

1. When news came earlier this year that the government might allow horseracing in Wuhan (and that spectators would be allowed to participate in a “lottery”—gambling remains illegal), Far Eastern Economic Review posted a short excerptfrom a 1983 book …

Organic Chemostratigraphic Markers Characteristic Of The (Informally Designated) Anthropocene Epoch, Michael A. Kruge

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Recognizing the tremendous collective impact of humans on the environment in the industrial age, the proposed designation of the current time period as the Anthropocene Epoch has considerable merit. One of the signature activities during this time continues to be the intensive extraction, processing, and combustion of fossil fuels. While fossil fuels themselves are naturally-occurring, they are most often millions of years old and associated with deeply buried strata. They may be found at the surface, for example, as natural oil seeps or coal seam outcrops, but these are relatively rare occurrences. Fossil fuels and their myriad by-products become the …

Ac System Equipment Specification, Installation And Operational Options For Improved Indoor Humidity Control, Florida Solar Energy Center, Don B. Shirey Iii

FSEC Energy Research Center®

High-efficiency home designs have significantly reduced sensible cooling loads, and some building codes and IAQ standards have begun requiring continuous outdoor ventilation air. These trends have led to an increased prevalence of high indoor humidity conditions (Rudd and Henderson 2007). This paper presents a summary of low-cost or no-cost equipment selection and operation options for conventional residential air-conditioning equipment than can result in lower indoor humidity levels. These options should be evaluated and employed to the extent possible prior to considering the added first cost and operating costs of separate dehumidification equipment.

Ultra-scaled FinFET transistors bear unique fingerprint-like device-to-device differences attributed to random single impurities. Through correlation of experimental data with multimillion atom simulations in NEMO 3-D, we can identify the impurity’s chemical species and determine their concentration, local electric field and depth below the Si/SiO2 interface. The ability to model the excited states rather than just the ground states is the critical need. We therefore demonstrate a new approach to atomistic impurity metrology and confirm the assumption of tunneling through individual impurity quantum states.

High quality GaAs epilayers grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition are demonstrated on a SiO2-patterned silicon substrate using aspect ratio trapping technique, whereby threading dislocations from lattice mismatch are largely reduced via trapping in SiO2 trenches during growth. A depletion-mode metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) is demonstrated on a n-doped GaAs channel with atomic-layer deposited Al2O3 as the gate oxide. The 10 mu m gate length transistor has a maximum drain current of 88 mA/mm and a transconductance of 19 mS/mm. The surface mobility estimated from the accumulation drain current has a peak value of similar to 500 cm(2)/Vs, which is …

Full-Band And Atomisic Simulation Of Realistic 40 Nm Inas Hemt, Mathieu Luisier, Neophytos Neophytou, Neerav Kharche, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

A realistic 40 nm InAs high electron mobility transistor is studied using a two-dimensional, full-band, and atomistic Schr¨odinger-Poisson solver based on the sp3d5s∗ tightbinding model. Bandstructure non-parabolicity effects, strain, alloy disorder in the InGaAs and InAlAs barriers, as well as band-to-band tunneling in the transistor OFF-state are automatically included through the full-band atomistic model. The source and drain contact extensions are taken into account a posteriori by adding two series resistances to the device channel. The simulated current characteristics are compared to measured data and show a good quantitative agreement.

A Multi-Level Parallel Simulation Approach To Electron Transport In Nano-Scale Transistors, Mathieu Luisier Purdue University - Main Campus, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Physics-based simulation of electron transport in nanoelectronic devices requires the solution of thousands of highly complex equations to obtain the output characteristics of one single input voltage. The only way to obtain a complete set of bias points within a reasonable amount of time is the recourse to supercomputers offering several hundreds to thousands of cores. To prot from the rapidly increasing availability of such machines we have developed a state-of-the-art quantum mechanical transport simulator dedicated to nanodevices and working with four levels of parallelism. Using these four levels we demonstrate that an almost ideal scaling of the walltime up …

Confidence Intervals For A Common Mean With Missing Data With Applications In An Aids Study, Hua Liang, Haiyan Su, Guohua Zou

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In practical data analysis, nonresponse phenomenon frequently occurs. In this paper, we propose an empirical likelihood based confidence interval for a common mean by combining the imputed data, assuming that data are missing completely at random. Simulation studies show that such confidence intervals perform well, even when the missing proportion is high. Our method is applied to an analysis of a real data set from an AIDS clinic trial study.

Effect Of Linker Structure On Surface Density Of Aptamer Monolayers And Their Corresponding Protein Binding Efficiency, Subramanian Balamurugan, Anne Obubuafo, Robin L. Mccarley, Steven A. Soper, David A. Spivak

Faculty Publications

A systematic study is reported on the effect of linker size and its chemical composition toward ligand binding to a surface-immobilized aptamer, measured using surface plasmon resonance. The results, using thrombin as the model system, showed that as the number of thymidine (T) units in the linker increases from 0 to 20 in four separate increments (T0, T 5, T10, T20), the surface density of the aptamer decreased linearly from approximately 25 to 12 pmol·cm -2. The decrease in aptamer surface density occurred due to the increased size of the linker molecules. In addition, thrombin binding capacity was shown to …

The Development Of Hyaluronic Acid Biomaterials For Vascular Tissue Engineering, Samir Ibrahim Dec 2008

The Development Of Hyaluronic Acid Biomaterials For Vascular Tissue Engineering, Samir Ibrahim

All Dissertations

Current vascular implant materials poorly interact with medial smooth muscle cells (SMCs) allowing the permanent loss of vascular elastin, eliminated by trauma or disease, a crucial element in maintaining the natural biomechanics of the blood vessel and overall vascular homeostasis. In addition, these materials insufficiently recruit vascular endothelial cells (ECs) to form a normally functional, confluent endothelium that acts as the interface between the blood and vascular tissue and regulates numerous vital vascular processes. As a result, the restenosis, or re-occlusion, rate within these devices has remained fairly high stimulating the investigation of numerous new materials capable of providing the …

We present a search for the Higgs boson in the process qq̄→ ZH→ℓ+ℓ-bb̄. The analysis uses an integrated luminosity of 1fb-1 of pp̄ collisions produced at s=1.96TeV and accumulated by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II). We employ artificial neural networks both to correct jets mismeasured in the calorimeter and to distinguish the signal kinematic distributions from those of the background. We see no evidence for Higgs boson production, and set 95% C.L. upper limits on σZHB(H→bb̄), ranging from 1.5 to 1.2 pb for a Higgs boson mass (mH) of 110 to 150GeV/c2. © 2008 The American Physical …

We report a measurement of the single-top-quark production cross section in 2.2fb-1 of pp̄ collision data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at s=1.96TeV. Candidate events are classified as signal-like by three parallel analyses which use likelihood, matrix element, and neural network discriminants. These results are combined in order to improve the sensitivity. We observe a signal consistent with the standard model prediction, but inconsistent with the background-only model by 3.7 standard deviations with a median expected sensitivity of 4.9 standard deviations. We measure a cross section of 2.2-0.6+0.7(stat+syst)pb, extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix-element value |Vtb|=0.88-0.12+0.13(stat+syst)±0.07(theory), and set the limit …

We use the three lepton and missing energy trilepton signature to search for chargino-neutralino production with 2.0fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron pp collider. We expect an excess of approximately 11 supersymmetric events for a choice of parameters of the mSUGRA model, but our observation of 7 events is consistent with the standard model expectation of 6.4 events. We constrain the mSUGRA model of supersymmetry and rule out chargino masses up to 145GeV/c2 for a specific choice of parameters. © 2008 The American Physical Society.
