This anthology of essay provides a persuasive basis for widening our geographic Emma Christopher et. al. (eds.), “Many Middle Passages: Forced Migration and the Making of the Modern World,” Journal of the Early Republic 28:3 (Fall 2008): 474-477. lens when considering coerced voyages across the Atlantic. It offers as a useful framing tool to consider the social and cultural transformations of a variety of people coercively transported that middle passages were ‘‘the structuring link between expropriation in one geographic setting and exploitation in another.” Additionally, the editors consider a variety of ‘‘prisons’’ central to these middle passages, and claim that …

Recently I read and skimmed editions of the writings of Marco Polo, including Komroff’s The Travels of Marco Polo and Moule and Pelliot’s encyclopedic The Description of the World. Apart from cataloguing details about Asian lands, peoples, and inventions fantastic in the eyes of early fourteenth- century Europeans, these, along with Laurence Bergreen’s well-documented biography Marco Polo: From Venice to Xanadu, unexpectedly suggested to me how, increasingly in this digital age, student research projects present questions of authenticity similar to those of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts—Polo’s being no exception.

During th,e era of analog technology, musical works were stored by encoding the works in a physical medium, such as music cassettes, videotapes, vinyl records and other forms of magnetic tapes. Reproduction of any musical work from those media would result in deterioration in quality of the reproduced music. This was a direct result of the inherent nature of analog technology. Journal of International Women's Studies

Despite decades of feminist activism, men continue to rape women at appalling rates. This paper evaluates the failure of the Nigerian state to enforce laws to protect women against rape. Rape is also shown to be a global problem. The flaws in the Law’s definition of rape are examined. Women’s action-oriented responses and initiatives against these abuses are highlighted.

International trade policies have traditionally been measured in terms of net economic benefit and market-based criteria. For the most part, these policies have largely ignored any of the societal effects that a liberalized trade regime may cause. Recently, however, the environmental, health, and labor impacts of trade agreements have slowly gained recognition as areas of concern. This recognition has led to an overall growing trend towards acknowledging the linkages between trade and non-trade issues.
