The Disabled Family Dynamic In Drama: The Glass Menagerie, A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg And Time For Ben, Terah Herman
The Disabled Family Dynamic In Drama: The Glass Menagerie, A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg And Time For Ben, Terah Herman
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
Early disability research in the social sciences focused on the individual, or the person with the disability. Only recently has disability research accepted that every family member is affected. The disabled does not suffer the disability alone; the entire family— as well as friends and relatives—suffer ramifications. Parental roles are altered, and grief, anger and guilt often blur the parameters of acceptable parental care. By using disabled family dynamic research in dialog with The Glass Menagerie, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, and Time for Ben, I argue that the disabled family dynamic is present, …

Movie Making: The Integration Of Art And Business, Jennifer Rae Sanderson
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
I am enrolled in two very different master programs: The Creative Pulse and Media Arts. Some questioned the load of working toward both graduate degrees simultaneously. Fortunately the programs married each other well and one aided the other. Skills adopted in both were critical to the project foot printed in this paper. Both degrees had a focus in art but The Creative Pulse combined interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences with leadership taught in groups that changed the way I processed information. We were challenged to use risk and rigor in all endeavors. This was not a suggestion but mandatory. Intense group …
Revising Cio-Cio-San, Linda B. Fairtile
Revising Cio-Cio-San, Linda B. Fairtile
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
Some of the mast extensive and significant textual changes in all of Puccini's operas appear in the published revisions of Madama Butterfly. Many of these verbal modifications, together with cuts and additions to the score, influence the dramatic depiction of the protagonists. Changes to Pinkerton's character soften an insensitive and even offensive figure who, after all, needs to be convincing as the object of Butterfly's love. For Cio-Cio-San, three rounds of revision mean a gradual loss of complexity on any fronts, bringing an exotic, mercurial heroine closer to operatic convention. The Butterfly that we know today has a more …

Leadership Through Laughter: How Henry Carey Reinvented English Music And Song, Jennifer Cable
Leadership Through Laughter: How Henry Carey Reinvented English Music And Song, Jennifer Cable
Music Faculty Publications
Polly refers to Miss Polly Peachum, a character in John Gay's The Beggar's Opera of 1728 (January). Henry Carey (1687-1743) set this verse (1728) to his famous tune Sally in our Alley, which Gay had used in the opera. Carey's verse about Polly Peachum became so popular that it was eventually incorporated into The Beggar's Opera libretto, beginning with the third edition.1 Even in this short example, we can detect Carey's delight that Polly had overtaken "the Opera of Rolli," alluding to Italian opera in general by referring specifically to the Italian poet and librettist who adapted libretti for …
The Composing Of "Musick" In The English Language: The Development Of The English Cantata, 1700-1750, Jennifer Cable
The Composing Of "Musick" In The English Language: The Development Of The English Cantata, 1700-1750, Jennifer Cable
Music Faculty Publications
The cantata as cultivated by Alessandro Scarlatti and his contemporaries Alessandro Stradella and Giovanni Bononcini was the model for the early development of the English cantata, "which remained a solo vocal genre in England throughout the eighteenth century, namely 1710-1800. By focusing on specific musical elements, such as cantata format (recitative-aria-recitative-aria or aria-recitative-aria), song forms, motivic use, textual content, instrumental requirements and performance venues, the evolution of the English cantata can be observed during the first half of the eighteenth century, developing from a simple imitation of the Italian form to a genre in its own right.1

Deseos De Estados Queer En La Producción Crítica Latina De Los Estados Unidos, LáZaro Lima
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Manuel Molins: Una Altra Ofèlia I Els Fantasmes De Shakespeare, Sharon G. Feldman
Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Effects Of Fluency Instruction On Literacy Skills In The First Grade Classroom, Susan A. Buchanan
Effects Of Fluency Instruction On Literacy Skills In The First Grade Classroom, Susan A. Buchanan
The Corinthian
The effects of fluency intervention strategies on students’ fluency rate, comprehension, and word identification were the focus of this study. Both the experimental and control groups were first grade classes, taught by the same teacher, at a primary school in central Georgia. The study was conducted over a 15-week period. The results of the study were inconclusive. The Lexia Comprehensive Reading Test was used at the beginning and end of fall semester. While the experimental group showed expected progress in comprehension, fluency rate, and word identification, there was no statistical difference in the achievement of both groups. Both groups improved …
Enmasking Beckett: The Use Of The Commedia Dell'arte In Waiting For Godot, Shaun Sheley
Enmasking Beckett: The Use Of The Commedia Dell'arte In Waiting For Godot, Shaun Sheley
Theses
In Enmasking Beckett: The Use of the Commedia dell'Arte in Waiting for Godot, Shaun Sheley explores how the traditional Italian theatrical form of Commedia dell'Arte can inform and enhance character development and physical expression in Samuel Beckett’s seminal play Waiting for Godot. Drawing on his experience directing a 2007 university production, Sheley demonstrates how the fixed archetypes and physical vocabulary of Commedia dell'Arte can be applied to Beckett’s characters—Vladimir, Estragon, Pozzo, and Lucky—to support their stylized, non-naturalistic portrayal and Beckett’s own directive for the play to be performed "balletically."
The thesis contextualizes Waiting for Godot within Beckett’s broader …
Cinema's Green Is Gold: The Commodification Of Irishness In Film, Erika Noelle Mann
Cinema's Green Is Gold: The Commodification Of Irishness In Film, Erika Noelle Mann
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis is concerned with the manners in which Irishness has become highly desirable and commodified, and the manifestations that commodification has taken in Irish film. In recognition that the Irish American diaspora holds a special regard for Irishness, I will explore reasons for the allure of Irishness for Irish Americans and how that allure contributes to commodification. Chiefly among these reasons are Irishness’ desirability as a white ethnicity and its alignment with a family values based morality. Irishness also has strong appeal for the Irish diaspora with its ties to a land that offers a welcoming “authentic” homeland and …

Repossessing Identity: The Work Of Rita Ann Higgins, Jeanine Alene Bator
Repossessing Identity: The Work Of Rita Ann Higgins, Jeanine Alene Bator
All Master's Theses
William Butler Yeats's (1865-1939) work harkens back to an idyllic Ireland-a mythic land of heroes. Through his and others' depiction of Ireland as an idealized space, Yeats furthered the myth of the Mother Ireland figure. Due to this representation, female Irish writers, like Eavan Boland (1944- ), find that Irish women have not only been written out of the canon, but also out of the fabric of history. Thus, this study examines the works of lrish poet Rita Ann Higgins (1955-) through the lens of the Yeatsian tradition, which has long defined Irish identity. Higgins writes in direct contrast to …

Dressing The Girl/Playing The Boy: Twelfth Night Learns Soccer On The Set Of She's The Man, L Monique Pittman
Dressing The Girl/Playing The Boy: Twelfth Night Learns Soccer On The Set Of She's The Man, L Monique Pittman
Faculty Publications
She’s The Man (2006), Andy Fickman’s adaptation of Twelfth Night, pulses with the Title Nine girl power that found cinematic voice and financial reward in Bend It Like Beckham (2002). Creating a pretext for the play’s gender swapping by entering the world of high school soccer, She’s the Man exploits conventions associated with the teen film genre–social group conformity and anxiety, crisis of identity, divorced parents, and ineffectual authority figures. Shakespeare’s cross-dressed heroine Viola becomes Viola Hastings played by Amanda Bynes, for whom this film serves as a star-vehicle showcasing Bynes’s comedic range. In some ways, the film intensifies the …
