Bells Of Change: Kathak Dance, Women And Modernity In India, Pallabi Chakravorty
Bells Of Change: Kathak Dance, Women And Modernity In India, Pallabi Chakravorty
Dance Faculty Works
The first critical study of Kathak dance within the discourses of the modern and the global, tracing the arc of two centuries of Kathak: the colonial nautch dance, classical Kathak under nationalism and postcolonialism and 'innovation' and 'new directions' under transnationalism and globalization. It blends various approaches from anthropology, ethnomusicology, and performance, media and gender studies to map the journey of Kathak from baijis and tawaifs to the global stage. The book uses dance as a lens to explore the interaction between the actors and forces of cultural change from power and patronage to television and film.

The First Act, Angela Hunt
The First Act, Angela Hunt
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The First Act is a creative thesis which explores the boundaries of biography and autobiography, fact and fiction, as the life of my mother, Deborah Wolfe, and my own, intersect in prose and drama. My purpose in writing this thesis was to examine and seek an understanding of my own relationship with the past and the present, as I explored the roots of my family history, specifically through the eyes of my mother, while using aspects of my family’s West Virginian and Mormon heritage. By reading the following story, you will, in a way, go on that journey with me …

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Tom Klobe and Reiko Brandon deserve our very special thanks for the organization of such a splendid symposium, which indeed exceeded our expectations and goals. Thanks are also due to the Hawaii Organizing Committee who worked so hard to make available both Hawaii’s rich cultural heritage and its creative involvement today, as expressed through textiles. The participation and contribution of more than thirty museums, arts, and cultural organizations to the theme, “Textiles as Cultural Expressions”, celebrated Hawaii’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. The textile community in Honolulu came together as never before and the city and state responded with welcoming …

Flow, Sharon L. Kennedy
Flow, Sharon L. Kennedy
Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications
Symbolizing purity, sustenance, tranquility, power, movement, and continuity, water is a source of life as well as destruction and death. Its surface serves as a metaphor for self-reflection and contemplation. It flows over cultural and physical boundaries. Water is indispensable to human survival, yet many take it for granted. We pollute it, misuse it, and fight over it. It is easily accessible to some while nearly out of reach to others. Flow explores the theme of water as subject and symbol, natural wonder, recreational resource, and environmental concern.
Artists with an affinity toward nature, especially landscape painters, chose water as …

Section 1201 of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act provided sweeping protection for technological measures or virtual locks on digital content to protect the entertainment industries-including music, films, games, and consumer electronics. Manufacturers use digital rights management (DRM) authorized under the law to lock down all software embedded in products, movies on DVDs, and audio files sold on iTunes and other Internet sites. DRM unfairly extends copyright and that legal protection is unnecessary to the robust development of new creative works Critics of the DMCA have charged that the law has extended well past its anti-piracy role to undermine fair …

To Make A Difference: Dean As Producer, Jon M. Garon
Faculty Scholarship
As I look at my fifth year as Dean of Hamline University School of Law, I am often struck by the dissonance between my professional life, as a lawyer and law professor, and my administrative life, as a dean within a small university. In both roles, I remain driven to make a difference for the individuals I serve and the broader community in which we live. But these roles have never sat comfortably, one with the other. I am a product of my unique practice and academic experience. An entertainment lawyer by disposition, my field includes a broad array of …
