Sarah Kane's Cruelty: Subversive Performance And Gender, Rebecca L. Dluback Jan 2008

Sarah Kane's Cruelty: Subversive Performance And Gender, Rebecca L. Dluback

ETD Archive

Sarah Kane uses cruelty in her plays Blasted and Cleansed to shock the audience out of their indifference, which will then allow Kane to subvert gender norms, through performed acts on stage, and the heterosexual patriarchal authority that creates the Other in society. Kane uses the theories of Antonin Artaud and Judith Butler to create a new style that melds these two theories while bringing a fresh take to the theater. Kane was twenty-three when her first play, Blasted, opened at the Royal Court Theater Upstairs on January 12, 1995. It was met with hostility by the critics when it …

Sex, Gender, And Androgyny In Virginia Woolf's Mock-Biographies "Friendships Gallery" And Orlando, Sarah Hastings Jan 2008

Sex, Gender, And Androgyny In Virginia Woolf's Mock-Biographies "Friendships Gallery" And Orlando, Sarah Hastings

ETD Archive

This is an examination of sex, gender, and androgyny in Virginia Woolf́⁰₉s ́⁰₋Friendships Gallerý⁰₊ and Orlando. These texts, written twenty years apart, highlight Woolf́⁰₉s development as a feminist who seeks to obliterate the assumed sex and gender binary. She accomplishes this through a mock biography format. Her first attempt highlights the androgynous nature of the main character Violet, whereas in Orlando her message of the constrictive nature of an assumed link between sex and gender is far more emphatically proven though the utilization of the titular character undergoing a biological sex change that ultimately leaves his/her gender unaffected

Politics And Culture At The Jacobean Court: The Role Of Queen Anna Of Denmark, Courtney Erin Thomas Jan 2008

Politics And Culture At The Jacobean Court: The Role Of Queen Anna Of Denmark, Courtney Erin Thomas

Quidditas

Until recently, analyses of the Jacobean court marginalized the important role played by James I and VI’s queen consort, Anna of Denmark. While historians and literary critics now acknowledge that Anna was a key player in patronage networks and artistic circles at the time, the extent of her political involvement remains largely unexplored in favor of portraying her solely as a cultural figure. This essay seeks to examine the connections between Anna’s cultural and political activities and suggests that, by viewing Anna’s involvements thorough a dichotomous lens as being either political or cultural, a truly textured and nuanced understanding of …

Thinking About Fairness & Achieving Balance In Mediation, Sarah E. Burns Jan 2008

Thinking About Fairness & Achieving Balance In Mediation, Sarah E. Burns

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article identifies five sources of bias present in mediation practice: (1) categorization, (2) attribution, (3) metaphorical expression, (4) norming, and (5) framing. For each of these "cognitive efficiencies," which contribute to bias in mediation, the author provides practice recommendations. Finally, the author suggests that the Article be read as a proposal for further thought and inquiry to improve the fairness of mediators.

Splinter Removal With The Aid Of Ultrasonography: A Case Report, C.K. Lee, T.S. Ahmad, B.J. Abdullah Jan 2008

Splinter Removal With The Aid Of Ultrasonography: A Case Report, C.K. Lee, T.S. Ahmad, B.J. Abdullah

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Splinter or foreign body removal from the hand and foot is a common occurrence. Usually only the deep seated, broken or missed splinters are referred to the surgeon for removal. Unless the object is radio-opaque, plain radiograph will not give any useful information, hence removal can sometimes be very difficult and traumatic. We are reporting a case where a radiolucent splinter was removed with the aid of ultrasonography. This modality can help to localize a splinter at the pre and intra-operative period, minimizing amount of exploration and time of operation.

Literacy And Science Connections In The Classroom, Donna M. Plummer, Wilma Kuhlman

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Educators in many disciplines recognize interdisciplinary teaching as effective for student learning. This article provides a model for developing an interdisciplinary literacy and science study with states of water as the core scientific study with corresponding literacy strategies. Authors have included suggestions for children’s literature as well as science experiences to use with this study. This water model provides teachers a base for developing studies that integrate their literacy and science curricula.
