Undocumented Workers In The United States: Legal, Political, And Social Effects, Rachel Feltman

Richmond Journal of Global Law & Business

Immigration law is a hotly contested topic these days. Not only does it have important implications in numerous legal fields, including labor law and tort law, but it also has social, political, and economic effects that ripple throughout our society. Immigrants, especially those who remain undocumented, have the potential to affect the lives of people in almost every walk of life, from politicians to entrepreneurs, and even to teenagers seeking their first jobs. After analyzing the legal impact of current legislation on the field of labor law, it becomes apparent that the employment of undocumented aliens does not have the …

Results of the reliability and concurrent validity testing suggest that the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire may be a valuable tool for use with Spanish-speaking Latino families. The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire in Spanish assessed parenting practices among 50 first-generation Spanish-speaking Latino families of primarily Mexican origin with a child between 4 and 9 years of age (n = 96 parents, n = 50 children). Mothers and fathers completed questionnaires in Spanish to assess parent and child behaviors. Results show that over 80% of parents included in …

The Effect Of Supplemental Instruction On Timely Graduation, Tyler J. Bowles, Adam C. Mccoy, Scott Bates Jan 2008

The Effect Of Supplemental Instruction On Timely Graduation, Tyler J. Bowles, Adam C. Mccoy, Scott Bates

Psychology Faculty Publications

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a national program designed to aid college student learning. Many researchers have noted that analysis of the impact of the SI program on student achievement is problematic as a result of the inherent self-selection bias. We apply a sufficiently sophisticated statistical technique that controls for the self-selection problem and test the effect of student SI attendance in freshmen level courses on graduation success. Our analysis suggests that SI attendance in freshmen level courses has a statistically significant influence on graduation success. Indeed, SI attendance, everything else held constant, increases the probability of timely graduation by approximately …

What Is Rti And How Do I Fit In?, Sandra Laing Gillam

Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Faculty Publications

Since 1977, most children with LD have been identified for services on the basis of an IQ-achievement discrepancy criterion. That is, children must be failing in one or two areas, significantly, even though they score well on an IQ measure in order to qualify for special education services. There are a number of problems with this practice, not the least of which being that many children with serious learning difficulties do not perform well on verbally loaded measures of IQ and do not qualify for comprehensive services designed for children who meet the discrepancy criteria. In addition, discrepancy criteria and …

Group Dynamics, Donelson R. Forsyth Jan 2008

Group Dynamics, Donelson R. Forsyth

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Group dynamics are the influential actions, processes and changes that take place in groups. Much of the world's work is accomplished by people working with others in groups, and the processes that take place within these groups--the continual vying for social status, the give-and-take collaboration between members, the pressure of the group on the atypical individual, and the eruption of conflict and discord that can shatter the group--significantly shape members' experiences as well as their accomplishments. It was the eminent social scientist Kurt Lewin (1951) who used the term 'group dynamics' to describe the powerful and complex social processes that …

Do Control Beliefs Mediate The Relationship Between Social Exchanges And Health? Examining A Mediational Model Across The Lifespan, Heather Renee Frederick

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Social exchanges and control beliefs are each associated with heath yet rarely considered together. This research examined whether control beliefs are a plausible mechanism linking domain specific social exchanges (both supportive and unsupportive) to health. The sample consisted of 2,348 adults drawn from the Midlife in the United States Survey (MIDUS). All participants were married or in a cohabitating relationship; they were primarily White and educated. Structural equation modeling was used to test multiple meditational models. When the model was tested for the entire sample, control beliefs were found to serve as a mediator, significantly mediating the relationship between social …

Children’S Goal Profiles And Perceptions Of The Motivational Climate: Interactive Association With Self-Determined Motivation And Affective Patterns In Physical Education, Sam Carr, Daniel A. Weigand Jan 2008

Children’S Goal Profiles And Perceptions Of The Motivational Climate: Interactive Association With Self-Determined Motivation And Affective Patterns In Physical Education, Sam Carr, Daniel A. Weigand

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Developing an understanding of youngster’s motivation for physical education (PE) is becoming increasingly important. This study examined the interactive effects of children’s multiple goal profiles and perceptions of the motivational climate on indices of self-determined motivation and affect in 429 students (201 boys, 228 girls; M age = 11.2, SD = .39) in northwest England. MANOVA results revealed a significant (p < .05) main effect for goal profiles and perceived motivational climate. Moreover, a significant interaction between goal profiles and perceived climate was found: Children with high mastery/high performance profiles had high levels of intrinsic motivation and identified regulation, regardless of the climate. In contrast, other profile groups (i.e., high mastery/low performance, low mastery/high performance, low mastery/low performance) were more likely to have high levels of intrinsic motivation and identified regulation from exposure to a perceived mastery climate. These results are discussed in terms of the contribution they appear to make to recent analyses of multiple goals.

Women And Their Relationship To Leader, Follower Commitment, And Job Performance: Netherlands, Belgium, And North Carolina, Anita Maria Cassard, Joseph Charles Hamel Jan 2008

Women And Their Relationship To Leader, Follower Commitment, And Job Performance: Netherlands, Belgium, And North Carolina, Anita Maria Cassard, Joseph Charles Hamel

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Transformational leadership has become a major initiative in organizational change, yet research on the impact of the similarity of leadership styles between leaders, and women who directly report to them, specifically in international settings, is lacking. Presenting the findings of two studies showed that (a) leaders, and women directly reporting to them sharing similar leadership styles, is a strong predictor of organizational commitment and improved job performance, and (b) emerging themes revealed that external pressures on women to conform to unwritten codes when in position of power are strong. Using quantitative data analysis for the Netherlands and Belgium study, and …

Local Archives And Teaching The History Of Sociology: Experiences At The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Opportunities to teach and conduct research on the local disciplinary history of sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are limited only by one’s imagination and the pragmatic realities of classroom constraints. Over the years, I have been privileged to introduce Nebraska students to many particulars of the local sociological record via guest lectures in courses and colloquia, standalone PowerPoint slide shows, archival displays, informational brochures, various publications, and by distributing extensive compilations of pertinent documents on compact discs. Most recently, I included a one-and-a-half-week segment on the history of Nebraska sociology in an Introduction to Sociology course (Hill 2007c), employing …

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Ethnic groups differ in rates of suicidal behaviors among youths, the context within which suicidal behavior occurs (e.g., different precipitants, vulnerability and protective factors, and reactions to suicidal behaviors), and patterns of help-seeking. In this article, the authors discuss the cultural context of suicidal behavior among African American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian American and Pacific Islander, and Latino adolescents, and the implications of these contexts for suicide prevention and treatment. Several cross-cutting issues are discussed, including acculturative stress and protective factors within cultures; the roles of religion and spirituality and the family in culturally sensitive interventions; different manifestations …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Psychopathic Personality Features, Context And Incentives On Individuals' Beliefs They Would Malinger, Thomas Earl Rae Jan 2008

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Psychopathic Personality Features, Context And Incentives On Individuals' Beliefs They Would Malinger, Thomas Earl Rae

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accuracy in psychological evaluation and diagnosis relies heavily on the self-report of those being assessed. Consequently, the person who feigns or exaggerates cognitive, physical or psychological impairment, known as malingering, can present significant challenges in such situations. Research on malingering has focused primarily on improving detection of the behavior, resulting in the development of a number of effective assessment measures. However, much less research attention has been paid to increasing our understanding of the primary motivations underlying attempts to feign. As such, our understanding of why people malinger and what factors most strongly influence their decisions is quite limited. In …

An Investigation Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Caperton Forgiveness Styles Inventory, Duane Caperton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research was an investigation into the process of forgiveness. The analysis of qualitative interviews with nearly 100 participants suggested four different approaches, or styles, of forgiving and non-forgiving. The Intrapersonal style describes people who forgive other people by focusing on their own thoughts, feelings, and actions. The Interpersonal style describes people who forgive other people by focusing on the thoughts, feelings, and actions of the offending persons. The Easy Going style describes the people who never forgive anyone because they rarely or never feel offended and consequently rarely or never feel the need to forgive others. The Grudge Holder …

A sample of 164 specialEducation teachers responded to the quantitative survey. Each subject completed a 28 question …

Increasing Oral Reading Fluency In Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Breanna N. Gile Jan 2008

Increasing Oral Reading Fluency In Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Breanna N. Gile

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) has increased in the past several years. As the incidence of ASD rises, the number of students with an ASD in public school settings also rises. There is no information available regarding how academic skills, such as reading fluency, are improved in children with an ASD. In fact, most reading fluency literature has examined interventions and assessment strategies with participants with learning disabilities. However, research has demonstrated that stimulus control improves a variety of skills in students with an ASD. For example, interventions to increase oral reading fluency can serve as stimulus control. …

Killing In Combat And World Assumptions, Jennifer Mcdonner

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current research was qualitative in nature, exploring the experience of having killed in combat from a constructivist and phenomenological framework. The researcher used semi-structured interviews to examine the lived experiences of U.S. soldiers who have killed in combat and how those experiences relate to fundamental assumptions such as benevolence of the world, meaningfulness of the world, and inherent self worth as proposed by Janoff-Bulman. Participants were four men and one woman who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The researcher identified thematic networks of the evolving self, the self in relation to others, and the impermanence of the environment as …

Beyond Content, Deeper Than Delivery: What Critique Feedback Reveals About Communication Expectations In Design Education, Deanna Dannels, Amy Housley Gaffney, Kelly Norris Martin Jan 2008

Beyond Content, Deeper Than Delivery: What Critique Feedback Reveals About Communication Expectations In Design Education, Deanna Dannels, Amy Housley Gaffney, Kelly Norris Martin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In design education, the critique is a communication event in which students present their design and critics provide feedback. Presumably, the feedback gives the students information about their progress on the design. Yet critic feedback also serves a socializing function—providing students information about what it means to communicate well in the design education context. Using a qualitative research methodology, this study explores what critic feedback reflects about expected communication competencies in design studios. Results suggest that communication competence in this setting involves interaction management, demonstration of design evolution, transparent advocacy of intent, explanation of visuals, and the staging of the …

Perceptions Of Sibling Relationship Quality: Differences Between Deaf -Hearing Dyads And Hearing -Hearing Dyads, Kelly Renee Dardeen

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined how the variables of deafness and family environment affect the quality of the sibling relationship. Specifically, the author explored how the presence or absence of deafness in a sibling interacted with the family environment, and impacted the quality of the sibling relationship. Research on the impact of deafness on families and sibling relationships has shown mixed results. Many different variables have been included in past research, such as age and sex of siblings, birth order, and family size. However, relatively few researchers have focused on the dynamics of the family environment and how that influences the sibling …

Predicting Self-Harm: Factors Associated With Self-Injurious Behaviors In College Students, Jaclyn Mae Green Jan 2008

Predicting Self-Harm: Factors Associated With Self-Injurious Behaviors In College Students, Jaclyn Mae Green

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe personality disorder characterized by instability of mood, relationships and self-image as well as impulsive, self-damaging, and suicidal behaviors. One of the more disturbing symptoms of BPD is self-injurious behavior, a symptom that occurs in 50 to 80% of individuals diagnosed with BPD. However, interest in self-harm in the general population, particularly among college-aged individuals, has increased in recent years as researchers have become aware of the increasing prevalence of this phenomenon. Several variables have been found to be associated with self-harm, including BPD symptoms, dissociation, depression, substance abuse, impulsivity and decision-making deficits. However, …

It addresses the distinction between liberal education and training in trade technique, assesses pressures militating against liberal education in law, explores tensions within law faculties (such as the challenges presented by religious and cultural diversity) and considers the potential of attaining "grace through skills training". The paper explores arguments developed by Roger Burridge and Juilan Webb in their scholarship on "The Values of Common Law Legal Education."

Democratic Failure: Tracking The Ebb Of Democracy's Flow, 1800–2006, Sanja E. Sray Jan 2008

Democratic Failure: Tracking The Ebb Of Democracy's Flow, 1800–2006, Sanja E. Sray

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Scant attention has focused on the systematic study of democratic failure. This dissertation partially corrects this oversight. Tracing the roots of antidemocratic sentiment across the centuries, it first argues that the advance of institutions, fueled by underlying shifts in values and innovation in political philosophy, was key to freeing democracy from its bondage as a most disparaged form of governance. Focusing on the measurable aspects of these institutions, the study focuses on describing patterns of behavior when democracies fail. First, it shows that there have been clusters of democratic failure. These clusters, or counterwaves, find their roots in ancient antidemocratic …

This essay examines the results of a pilot study undertaken at George Mason University as a joint effort between the Psychology Department and the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution. The authors discuss the task of behavioralizing tactics commonly used in conflict situations, defining particular conflict styles often used by participants in conflicts, and the ability of the participants in the study to identify and agree upon the tactics and styles when viewed in a film. The authors also examine the relationship of shame, guilt, and anger in the conflict setting as it relates to the tactics used.

The Boundaries Of The Criminal Law: The Criminalization Of The Non-Disclosure Of Hiv, Isabel Grant Jan 2008

The Boundaries Of The Criminal Law: The Criminalization Of The Non-Disclosure Of Hiv, Isabel Grant

All Faculty Publications

In this paper, the author examines the trend toward the increased criminalization and punishment of persons with HIV who fail to inform their sexual partners of their HIV-positive status. Since the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in R. v. Cuerrier, such behaviour may constitute aggravated assault or aggravated sexual assault, the latter offence carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The paper surveys the Canadian case law and highlights the trend towards the imposition of increasingly harsh sentences. After reviewing public-health and criminal law options for dealing with non-disclosure of one's HIV status, the author concludes that criminal law should …
