Attitudes Of Indiana Specialeducation Teachers Towards The Use And Implementation Of Assistive Technology, Bruce H. Guggenberger

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the attitudes of specialEducation towards the use and implementation of Assistive Technology (AT). The study attempts to determine a relationship between the attitudes of teachers and the presence of an Assistive Technology Coordinator/Committee, whether the school is part of the Individualized Classroom Accountability Network (ICAN) project, the type of disability, and grade level of the student. The study was influenced by Everett Rogers's Diffusion of Innovation theory. The mixed-method research was conducted using specialEducation teachers within the State of Indiana. A sample of 164 specialEducation teachers responded to the quantitative survey. Each subject completed a 28 question …

Increasing Oral Reading Fluency In Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Breanna N. Gile Jan 2008

Increasing Oral Reading Fluency In Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Breanna N. Gile

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) has increased in the past several years. As the incidence of ASD rises, the number of students with an ASD in public school settings also rises. There is no information available regarding how academic skills, such as reading fluency, are improved in children with an ASD. In fact, most reading fluency literature has examined interventions and assessment strategies with participants with learning disabilities. However, research has demonstrated that stimulus control improves a variety of skills in students with an ASD. For example, interventions to increase oral reading fluency can serve as stimulus control. …

Killing In Combat And World Assumptions, Jennifer Mcdonner Jan 2008

Killing In Combat And World Assumptions, Jennifer Mcdonner

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current research was qualitative in nature, exploring the experience of having killed in combat from a constructivist and phenomenological framework. The researcher used semi-structured interviews to examine the lived experiences of U.S. soldiers who have killed in combat and how those experiences relate to fundamental assumptions such as benevolence of the world, meaningfulness of the world, and inherent self worth as proposed by Janoff-Bulman. Participants were four men and one woman who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The researcher identified thematic networks of the evolving self, the self in relation to others, and the impermanence of the environment as …

Beyond Content, Deeper Than Delivery: What Critique Feedback Reveals About Communication Expectations In Design Education, Deanna Dannels, Amy Housley Gaffney, Kelly Norris Martin Jan 2008

Beyond Content, Deeper Than Delivery: What Critique Feedback Reveals About Communication Expectations In Design Education, Deanna Dannels, Amy Housley Gaffney, Kelly Norris Martin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In design education, the critique is a communication event in which students present their design and critics provide feedback. Presumably, the feedback gives the students information about their progress on the design. Yet critic feedback also serves a socializing function—providing students information about what it means to communicate well in the design education context. Using a qualitative research methodology, this study explores what critic feedback reflects about expected communication competencies in design studios. Results suggest that communication competence in this setting involves interaction management, demonstration of design evolution, transparent advocacy of intent, explanation of visuals, and the staging of the …

Perceptions Of Sibling Relationship Quality: Differences Between Deaf -Hearing Dyads And Hearing -Hearing Dyads, Kelly Renee Dardeen Jan 2008

Perceptions Of Sibling Relationship Quality: Differences Between Deaf -Hearing Dyads And Hearing -Hearing Dyads, Kelly Renee Dardeen

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined how the variables of deafness and family environment affect the quality of the sibling relationship. Specifically, the author explored how the presence or absence of deafness in a sibling interacted with the family environment, and impacted the quality of the sibling relationship. Research on the impact of deafness on families and sibling relationships has shown mixed results. Many different variables have been included in past research, such as age and sex of siblings, birth order, and family size. However, relatively few researchers have focused on the dynamics of the family environment and how that influences the sibling …

Predicting Self-Harm: Factors Associated With Self-Injurious Behaviors In College Students, Jaclyn Mae Green Jan 2008

Predicting Self-Harm: Factors Associated With Self-Injurious Behaviors In College Students, Jaclyn Mae Green

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe personality disorder characterized by instability of mood, relationships and self-image as well as impulsive, self-damaging, and suicidal behaviors. One of the more disturbing symptoms of BPD is self-injurious behavior, a symptom that occurs in 50 to 80% of individuals diagnosed with BPD. However, interest in self-harm in the general population, particularly among college-aged individuals, has increased in recent years as researchers have become aware of the increasing prevalence of this phenomenon. Several variables have been found to be associated with self-harm, including BPD symptoms, dissociation, depression, substance abuse, impulsivity and decision-making deficits. However, …

Psychological And Cultural Meanings Of Hunger: Women's Experiences, Hyun Ok Kim Jan 2008

Psychological And Cultural Meanings Of Hunger: Women's Experiences, Hyun Ok Kim

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a qualitative study of the experience of hunger among women with no known eating disorders. Eight European American participants were recruited through a chain sampling strategy. Each participant completed two interview sessions, an initial open-ended interview and a follow-up. They were asked to describe their hunger experience and to tell stories that illustrated how food, eating, and cooking had impacted their relationship with food and their hunger experience. The data was analyzed from a Buddhist perspective. In contrast to the common understanding of hunger, participants experienced hunger both physiologically and psychologically. The results of the study indicate that …

Legal Education's Mission, W. Wesley Pue Jan 2008

Legal Education's Mission, W. Wesley Pue

All Faculty Publications

This paper explores the liberal commitments of legal education against the requirements of liberal democracy, properly understood. It addresses the distinction between liberal education and training in trade technique, assesses pressures militating against liberal education in law, explores tensions within law faculties (such as the challenges presented by religious and cultural diversity) and considers the potential of attaining "grace through skills training". The paper explores arguments developed by Roger Burridge and Juilan Webb in their scholarship on "The Values of Common Law Legal Education."

Democratic Failure: Tracking The Ebb Of Democracy's Flow, 1800–2006, Sanja E. Sray Jan 2008

Democratic Failure: Tracking The Ebb Of Democracy's Flow, 1800–2006, Sanja E. Sray

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Scant attention has focused on the systematic study of democratic failure. This dissertation partially corrects this oversight. Tracing the roots of antidemocratic sentiment across the centuries, it first argues that the advance of institutions, fueled by underlying shifts in values and innovation in political philosophy, was key to freeing democracy from its bondage as a most disparaged form of governance. Focusing on the measurable aspects of these institutions, the study focuses on describing patterns of behavior when democracies fail. First, it shows that there have been clusters of democratic failure. These clusters, or counterwaves, find their roots in ancient antidemocratic …

Conflict Tactics In A Mediation Setting, Linda M. Johnston, Michelle Lebaron

All Faculty Publications

This essay examines the results of a pilot study undertaken at George Mason University as a joint effort between the Psychology Department and the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution. The authors discuss the task of behavioralizing tactics commonly used in conflict situations, defining particular conflict styles often used by participants in conflicts, and the ability of the participants in the study to identify and agree upon the tactics and styles when viewed in a film. The authors also examine the relationship of shame, guilt, and anger in the conflict setting as it relates to the tactics used.

The Boundaries Of The Criminal Law: The Criminalization Of The Non-Disclosure Of Hiv, Isabel Grant Jan 2008

The Boundaries Of The Criminal Law: The Criminalization Of The Non-Disclosure Of Hiv, Isabel Grant

All Faculty Publications

In this paper, the author examines the trend toward the increased criminalization and punishment of persons with HIV who fail to inform their sexual partners of their HIV-positive status. Since the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in R. v. Cuerrier, such behaviour may constitute aggravated assault or aggravated sexual assault, the latter offence carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The paper surveys the Canadian case law and highlights the trend towards the imposition of increasingly harsh sentences. After reviewing public-health and criminal law options for dealing with non-disclosure of one's HIV status, the author concludes that criminal law should …

Multi-Algorithmic Cryptography Using Deterministic Chaos With Applications To Mobile Communications, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2008

Multi-Algorithmic Cryptography Using Deterministic Chaos With Applications To Mobile Communications, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

In this extended paper, we present an overview of the principal issues associated with cryptography, providing historically significant examples for illustrative purposes as part of a short tutorial for readers that are not familiar with the subject matter. This is used to introduce the role that nonlinear dynamics and chaos play in the design of encryption engines which utilize different types of Iteration Function Systems (IFS). The design of such encryption engines requires that they conform to the principles associated with diffusion and confusion for generating ciphers that are of a maximum entropy type. For this reason, the role of …

August Wilson’S The Piano Lesson And The Limits Of Law, Emilie Benoit, James Tackach Jan 2008

August Wilson’S The Piano Lesson And The Limits Of Law, Emilie Benoit, James Tackach

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson features a debate between an African American brother and sister over the ownership of a richly symbolic piano, a family heirloom that represents the Charles family’s slave heritage and its endurance through Reconstruction. Ownership questions like the one presented in The Piano Lesson can usually be resolved in the courts, but Wilson’s play suggests that the law might be unable to resolve property disputes so problematically entangled with the legacy of slavery. Wilson offers, instead, a non-legal resolution to the piano debate presented in his play.

Introduction To Ecological Landscaping: A Holistic Description And Framework To Guide The Study And Management Of Urban Landscape Parcels, Loren B. Byrne, Parwinder Grewal

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Urbanized ecosystems and urban human populations are expanding around the world causing many negative environmental effects. A challenge for achieving sustainable urban social ecological systems is understanding how urbanized landscapes can be designed and managed to minimize negative outcomes. To this end, an interdisciplinary Ecological Landscaping conference was organized to examine the interacting sociocultural and ecological causes and consequences of landscaping practices and products. This special issue of Cities and the Environment contains a diverse set of articles arising from that conference. In this introductory paper, we describe the meaning of ecological landscaping and a new conceptual framework that helps …

From Obsession To Confession: A False Confession Paradigm In The Murder Of Jon Benet Ramsey, Morgan Moffa, Judith Platania Jan 2008

From Obsession To Confession: A False Confession Paradigm In The Murder Of Jon Benet Ramsey, Morgan Moffa, Judith Platania

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

In this study, we used a fact pattern similar to the John Mark Karr scenario to examine perceptions of DNA and confession evidence. Specifically, we hypothesized that DNA evidence, confessor level of psychopathology, and presence or absence of Miranda protections would affect participants’ perceptions of guilt and attitudes towards the interrogation process. One hundred nine undergraduates read a two-page summary based on John Mark Karr’s confession. Summaries varied based on psychopathology of confessor, the presence or absence of DNA evidence, and the provision of Miranda warnings prior to confession. The DNA manipulation explained participants’ attitudes towards specific aspects of the …

Preparing Instructors Of Adult Learners To Address The Needs Of Minority Students, Travell Unique Brock Jan 2008

Preparing Instructors Of Adult Learners To Address The Needs Of Minority Students, Travell Unique Brock

Graduate Research Papers

In predominately Caucasian educational systems, diversity in the classroom is becoming a fast-growing phenomenon. With this new phenomenon, adult instructors now have a new challenge of facilitating learning in an environment where the learners not only have different learning capabilities, but also language and cultural differences. The reviewer answers the following questions: what are the important considerations for instructors to prepare diverse adult learners for corporate work environments, higher education, and K-12 professional development? And what are the appropriate cultural specific media and literature resources to include in training?

The literature collected focused on resources related to teaching adult minority …

Tactical Ineffective Assistance In Capital Trials, Kyle Graham Jan 2008

Tactical Ineffective Assistance In Capital Trials, Kyle Graham

American University Law Review

Are defense attorneys sandbagging in their death-penalty cases? In Poindexter v. Mitchell, a habeas corpus case decided in 2006, Chief Judge Danny Boggs of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit wrote that by conducting a deliberately defective investigation into mitigation evidence that might otherwise have been presented at the penalty phase of a capital trial, a defense attorney can virtually guarantee that any death sentence the jury returns will be vacated in later proceedings. The likelihood of such an outcome, Boggs wrote, will more than make up for the somewhat greater chance that a jury that …

Guarantors Of Our Genes: Are Egg Donors Liable For Latent Genetic Disease, Suriya E.P. Jayanti Jan 2008

Guarantors Of Our Genes: Are Egg Donors Liable For Latent Genetic Disease, Suriya E.P. Jayanti

American University Law Review

Assisted reproductive technology ("ART"), including egg donation, is changing the topography of the American family. Heated debates and legislative battles over cloning and stem cell research reveal the complexity of the moral, scientific, and legal implications of emerging alternative reproductive methods. In fact, the field of reproductive medicine is the "Wild West" of the healthcare world where technological development is testing the boundaries of science and ethics. The legal and ethical issues intrinsic to the evolution of the egg donation industry are poised to become central topics of public debate as we, as a culture, reevaluate who and what constitutes …

Genes In Glucose Metabolism And Association With Spina Bifida, Christina M Davidson, Hope Northrup, Terri M King, Jack M Fletcher, Irene Townsend, Gayle H Tyerman, Kit Sing Au

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The authors test single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in coding sequences of 12 candidate genes involved in glucose metabolism and obesity for associations with spina bifida. Genotyping was performed on 507 children with spina bifida and their parents plus anonymous control DNAs from Hispanic and Caucasian individuals. The transmission disequilibrium test was performed to test for genetic associations between transmission of alleles and spina bifida in the offspring (P < .05). A statistically significant association between Lys481 of HK1 (G allele), Arg109Lys of LEPR (G allele), and Pro196 of GLUT1 (A allele) was found ( P = .019, .039, and .040, respectively). Three SNPs on 3 genes involved with glucose metabolism and obesity may be associated with increased susceptibility to spina bifida.
