Communication Of Medical Information Using Agents, John Mcgrory, Jane Grimson, Frank Clarke, Peter Gaffney Jan 2008

Communication Of Medical Information Using Agents, John Mcgrory, Jane Grimson, Frank Clarke, Peter Gaffney

Conference Papers

Agents are self-contained software entities which act faithfully and autonomously on behalf of a body of knowledge. They can operate in a standalone capacity, or as part of a social group collaborating and

coordinating activities with other software agents. To access their knowledge, agents are interfaced with

using message passing communication. The principle behind medical communications is to provide a means

for exchanging information and knowledge from one computerised location to another, whilst preserving its

true meaning and understanding between the listener and sender. Agent communication is similar to medical

communications, but must provide an additional framework element to allow …

Metaphoric Perspective Theory: Language To Action For The Self, Individuals, Communities, And Culture, Steven Adam Stuglin Jan 2008

Metaphoric Perspective Theory: Language To Action For The Self, Individuals, Communities, And Culture, Steven Adam Stuglin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Metaphoric and tropic language have been a hallmark of human communication throughout the ages. From ancient examples and first attempts at scholarly understanding to postmodern lexicons of metaphor theory in two-dozen disciplines, the understanding of this lingual phenomenon has evolved and grown over arguably the entire length of human history. Communication scholars note the presence and prevalence of tropic language in practice and assert the power that it may have on how humans conceptualize the world around them.

Presented here is complete theory based in these long lines of lingual thought that asserts a direct and powerful relationship between language …

Landmine Casualty Data: Best Practices Guidebook, Cisr Jan 2008

Landmine Casualty Data: Best Practices Guidebook, Cisr

Global CWD Repository

This Landmine Casualty Data: Best Practices Guidebook reports on advances being made in casualty data collection and management and offers lessons learned that countries can reflect upon as they undertake the challenging task of building mine/ ERW victim information systems that meet their needs for data to use in planning and implementing their comprehensive mine action programs, including mine clearance, mine risk education and victim assistance. While the Guidebook is premised on the advances being made in some countries, much more progress is needed before effective landmine/ERW victim information systems will be operating in all mine-affected countries. It is important …

Favourable Influence Of Hydrophobic Surfaces On Protein Structure In Porous Organically-Modified Silica Glasses, Daryl K. Eggers, B. Menaa, M. Herrero, V. Rives, M. Lavrenko

Faculty Publications, Chemistry

Organically-modified siloxanes were used as host materials to examine the influence of surface chemistry on protein conformation in a crowded environment. The sol–gel materials were prepared from tetramethoxysilane and a series of monosubstituted alkoxysilanes, RSi(OR′)3, featuring alkyl groups of increasing chain length in the R-position. Using circular dichroism spectroscopy in the far-UV region, apomyoglobin was found to transit from an unfolded state to a native-like helical state as the content of the hydrophobic precursor increased from 0 to 15%. At a fixed molar content of 5% RSi(OR′)3, the helical structure of apomyoglobin increased with the chain length of the R-group, …

Competitive Abilities Of Native Grasses And Non-Native (Bothriochloa Spp.) Grasses, Cheryl D. Schmidt, Rob Channell Ph.D., Karen R. Hickman, Keith Harmoney, William J. Stark Ph.D.

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Old World Bluestems (OWB), introduced from Europe and Asia in the 1920s, recently have begun to raise concerns in the Great Plains. Despite suggestion in the late 1950s that OWB were weedy and negatively impacted biological diversity, they were widely introduced throughout the Great Plains for agricultural purposes. Anecdotal evidence suggests that OWB exhibit invasive characteristics that promote competitive exclusion of native species. The objective of our study was to quantify the competitive abilities of two OWB species (Caucasian bluestem; Bothriochloa bladhii (Retz.) S. T. Blake (= Bothriochloa caucasica (Trin.) C. E. Hubb.) and yellow bluestem; Bothriochloa ischaemum (L.) Keng) …

Characterization Of Unusual Gymnamoebae Isolated From The Marine Environment, Margaret Wacera Mbugua Jan 2008

Characterization Of Unusual Gymnamoebae Isolated From The Marine Environment, Margaret Wacera Mbugua

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Amoebae are important heterotrophic protists (protozoa) and this study focuses on three unusual forms from the marine environment. Amoebae are ubiquitous and play an important role as consumers in microbial communities. A common coastal ctenophore (Mnemiopsis sp.) is known to harbor an undescribed naked amoeba on the comb plate surface. The nature of the symbiotic association is unknown although electron microscopy suggests these micrograzers are degrading comb plates (Moss et al., 2001). A second amoeba isolate from mangrove waters is new to science by virtue of its distinctive trophic form that does not conform to any described species. …

Contrasting Demographic History And Phylogeographic Patterns In Two Indo-Pacific Gastropods, Eric D. Crandall, Melissa A. Frey, Richard K. Grosberg, Paul H. Barber Jan 2008

Contrasting Demographic History And Phylogeographic Patterns In Two Indo-Pacific Gastropods, Eric D. Crandall, Melissa A. Frey, Richard K. Grosberg, Paul H. Barber

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Marine species with ranges that span the Indo-Australian Archipelago (IAA) exhibit a range of phylogeographic patterns, most of which are interpreted in the context of vicariance between Indian and Pacific Ocean populations during Pliocene and Pleistocene low sea level stands. However, patterns often vary among ecologically similar taxa, sometimes even within genera. This study compares phylogeographic patterns in two species of highly dispersive Neritid gastropod, Nerita albicilla and Nerita plicata, with nearly sympatric ranges that span the Indo-Pacific. Mitochondrial COI sequences from > 1000 individuals from 97 sites reveal similar phylogenies in both species (two divergent clades differing by 3.2% and …

Comparative Phylogeography Of Two Seastars And Their Ectosymbionts Within The Coral Triangle, Eric D. Crandall, Mary Jones, Martha Munoz, Bolanle Akinronbi, Mark Erdmann, Paul Barber Jan 2008

Comparative Phylogeography Of Two Seastars And Their Ectosymbionts Within The Coral Triangle, Eric D. Crandall, Mary Jones, Martha Munoz, Bolanle Akinronbi, Mark Erdmann, Paul Barber

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Repeated exposure and flooding of the Sunda and Sahul shelves during Pleistocene sea level fluctuations is thought to have contributed to the isolation and diversification of sea basin populations within the Coral Triangle. This hypothesis has been tested in numerous phylogeographic studies, recovering an assortment of genetic patterns that the authors have generally attributed to differences in larval dispersal capability or adult habitat specificity. This study compares phylogeographic patterns from mitochondrial COI sequences among two co-distributed seastars that differ in their adult habitat and dispersal ability, and two seastar ectosymbionts that differ in their degree of host specificity. Of these, …

Sustainable Watersheds, Jonathan Z. Cannon Jan 2008

Sustainable Watersheds, Jonathan Z. Cannon

Michigan Law Review First Impressions

By any interpretation of sustainability, additional public and private investment should be made to protect and restore watersheds and their incorporated landscapes as sources of ecosystem services. This investment may require reducing current consumption but is justified because it will enhance the well being of the present generation and also enable future generations to enjoy a quality of life equal to our own.
